Appliance tripping the electrics? We locate the earth fault in West Bromwich
We isolate the appliance from the circuit, test for insulation and earth leakage, and establish whether the fault is inside the machine or in the supply.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

When an appliance trips the RCD or the breaker, the protective device is doing exactly its job. Current is finding a path it should not — to earth, or between live parts — and the device has cut the supply before anyone is hurt. Resetting it and continuing to use the appliance is the one response that reliably turns a repair into an incident. Understanding what tripped, and what that tells you, is the start of sorting it out.
Which device tripped matters
An MCB, the usual breaker in the consumer unit, protects the circuit against overload and short circuit. If it trips, the appliance is drawing far too much current or there is a live-to-neutral short. An RCD or RCBO protects against earth leakage, and it will trip for a fault of only a few tens of milliamps — often a fault that has developed slowly through moisture, heat damage or a cracked insulation sleeve. If the RCD trips only when the appliance is switched on, the appliance is the likely source. If it trips with the appliance unplugged, the fault is in the fixed wiring and needs a different response.
How an appliance develops an earth fault
The classic path is moisture. Water in a kettle's base connector, a steam iron that has been overfilled, a coffee machine that has leaked internally, a vacuum that has been used on a wet floor — all can bridge live parts to the casing. The second is heat: a terminal that has cooked its insulation until it carbonises and starts conducting. The third is mechanical: a flex crushed against a sharp edge, a cable pulled so the inner cores are exposed, or an element that has failed to earth internally. Each leaves a signature when tested, which is why insulation resistance testing is more useful than visual inspection alone.
What we do on the visit
The appliance is unplugged, the circuit is confirmed dead before any work, and the plug and flex are inspected for damage and damp. We then test insulation resistance between live parts and the earthed casing, and check the continuity of the earth path from the plug pin through to the metalwork. Where a heating element is suspected, it is isolated and tested separately so a failed element can be distinguished from a wiring fault. If the appliance proves sound, we say so and explain what to look at next in the circuit — we do not invent a fault to justify the visit.
Repair, or replace
Many earth faults are repairable: a damaged flex, a perished gasket letting water onto a terminal, a failed element, a cracked connector block. Some are not economic — a motor winding that has broken down to earth on a low-cost appliance usually means replacement. Whatever the finding, we explain it, identify any part needed and quote it separately. Where the fault involves a sealed refrigerant circuit or the high-voltage section of a microwave, the appliance is referred on rather than opened.
Safety, before and after
Unplug the appliance and do not reset the breaker to "test" it repeatedly; each trip is the device protecting you. Do not use the appliance on a different circuit to see if it works, since that removes the protection rather than the fault. If any part of the appliance, plug or socket is warm, scorched or smells of burning, leave it isolated. After a repair, test the appliance on its own circuit and keep an eye on it for the first few uses.
What helps the diagnosis
Tell us which device tripped, whether it happens immediately or after a few minutes, and whether it happens with the appliance switched on or merely plugged in. Those three answers separate most earth faults into their likely groups. Have the make and model, and mention any recent water spillage or leak.
Booking
Book online and describe the tripping behaviour. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts identified and priced separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A breaker or RCD that trips the moment an appliance is plugged in or switched on is telling you something specific: current is escaping where it should not. That is a safety issue rather than an inconvenience, and it should not be ignored by resetting the breaker and carrying on. Our visit tests the appliance's insulation and earthing to find where the leakage is, then explains the repair options.

Questions people ask about electrical fault in appliance
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just reset the breaker and keep using it?
No. A device that trips is reporting a fault that could give someone a shock or start a fire. Leave the appliance unplugged and have it tested before it is used again.
What tests do you run for an electrical fault?
Insulation resistance between live parts and the casing, earth continuity from the plug through to the metalwork, and where relevant an isolated test of the heating element. The plug and flex are inspected for damage and moisture first. The appliance is isolated first, and the RCD or breaker is left off until testing begins.
The RCD trips even with the appliance unplugged. Is that your job?
That points to a fault in the fixed wiring rather than the appliance, and it needs a different investigation. Tell us when you book so we can advise on the right visit rather than charging for the wrong one.
Could a spill have caused this?
Very often, yes. Moisture bridging live parts to the casing is the most common cause of earth leakage on kettles, irons and coffee machines. It may dry out, but the damage it leaves behind usually needs checking.
How much will the repair cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts; parts are identified and quoted separately.
