When an oven's control panel fails, the appliance often looks physically fine but behaves as if it has lost its mind: buttons that do nothing, a display showing nothing, settings that vanish or a clock that will not hold its time. Because the panel, the electronics behind it and the wiring that feeds them can each produce the same symptoms, careful testing is the only reliable route to the real cause.
Fuel type first, as always
An electric oven's control system is electrical throughout, so diagnosis and repair sit firmly within our competence. If your oven is gas, the gas-side components must only ever be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we never carry out gas work; we can assess the safely electrical parts and refer the rest to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with. Tell us the brand, model and fuel type when you book, plus the exact model number from the rating plate, because control parts are model-specific.
Simple causes worth ruling out first
Some control panel symptoms are not component failures. A power cut can leave the clock needing to be reset, and some ovens will not operate until the timer is set correctly. A child lock feature may have been activated accidentally, which disables the buttons on many models. Check the user manual for these if you have it; we can help interpret it during the visit too. If the panel is dead as well as the oven, check the isolator and consumer unit before assuming an internal fault.
What we test during the visit
With the appliance safely isolated we check the supply path to the control electronics, examine the wiring and connections between the board and the panel, and test the touch panel or button assembly, the display module and the control board itself. Liquid ingress is a frequent cause on oven panels: boil-over steam and cleaning sprays condense on and inside the fascia, corroding contacts over time. We look for exactly that evidence, as well as failed components. Every finding is explained as we go, in plain English.
What the fix usually involves
A corroded connection can often be cleaned and remade properly. A failed touch panel or display module is usually replaceable if the part exists for your model, and we will check availability and price before you commit. A failed main control board is the most expensive outcome, and there we will give you an honest view of repair versus replacing the oven, including the age of the appliance and the risk of the next fault arriving. Parts are identified and quoted separately, and nothing is ordered or fitted until you approve the full price.
Honest limits
For some discontinued models, control parts are no longer manufactured and are hard to source. Where that is the case we will tell you straight, show you what we found and let you decide between a used-part route where sensible and replacement. We will not fit a mismatched board or bodge a workaround, because those create their own faults later.
Interim safety advice
Do not keep pressing buttons on an erratic panel or force a dead appliance to run by resetting it repeatedly; leave the oven off at the isolator until assessed. Never open the control panel casing yourself, as the electronics are mains-fed and can hold residual charge. If your oven is gas and you ever smell gas, follow the emergency steps and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside.
Booking your diagnosis
Contact us with your postcode, the oven's make, full model number and fuel type, and exactly what the panel does and does not do. We will arrange a visit, test the control system thoroughly and quote any work for your approval before we start.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Modern ovens rely on their control panel for everything, so when buttons stop responding or the display goes dark the whole appliance is sidelined. The fault may be the panel itself, the board behind it, or something as simple as a connection. We test rather than guess, explain the finding clearly and quote before starting any work.

Questions people ask about control panel not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix an unresponsive oven control panel myself?
Beyond checking the manual for a child lock or timer reset, no. The panel and its electronics are mains-fed, and diagnosis needs proper testing equipment. Opening the casing yourself risks electric shock and can turn a small fault into a larger one.
What will you check during the diagnosis?
The supply to the control electronics, the wiring and connectors, the touch panel or buttons, the display module and the control board, plus evidence of moisture or corrosion. You get a clear explanation of the fault and a quoted price before any work begins.
My panel worked until I cleaned the oven. Is that related?
Very possibly. Cleaning sprays and boil-over moisture seep into the fascia and corrode panel contacts over time. Mention it when booking, because that history points the diagnosis in a specific and often repairable direction.
My oven is old and parts are discontinued. What then?
We will confirm what is and is not available, tell you honestly, and discuss the realistic options, which may include sourcing routes where sensible or accepting that replacement is the better decision. We will never fit incompatible parts as a workaround.
How much does the job cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, as shorter notice costs more. After diagnosis we quote the full cost including any parts separately identified, and nothing starts until you approve that price.
