Losing one ring on a four-zone hob is the kind of fault that's easy to live with and equally easy to regret. The remaining zones keep working, dinner still gets cooked, and the dead ring quietly becomes part of the kitchen furniture. But the underlying cause — often a failing element or a connection that has overheated — doesn't usually improve with time, and catching it early is almost always cheaper than leaving it.

Why a single zone fails

Each cooking zone on an electric or ceramic hob has its own element and its own wiring path back to the controls. That independence is useful: it means one dead ring rarely signals a whole-hob failure. The usual suspects are a failed element (they can burn out open or develop partial faults), a connector or terminal that has overheated, or a fault in the selector switch or control board that feeds that zone.

Induction hobs work differently, using electronics to drive a coil under each zone. A single dead induction zone can point to that zone's coil or driver board. Gas hobs are a different matter again — a dead burner on gas involves the ignition system and gas side of the appliance, which is gas work. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and does not carry out gas work; for gas burner faults we recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer and can help with the safe electrical checks around it.

What the visit involves

The engineer will confirm the supply to the hob is healthy, then test the dead zone systematically — element resistance, wiring continuity, connections and the control path. On induction models we also check the electronics for that zone. You'll get a plain-English answer at the end: what failed, why, and whether repairing it is sensible compared with the hob's age and condition.

Choosing the right repair

If the diagnosis is a failed element or connector, repair is usually straightforward and we can quote the part and fit it with your approval. If the fault sits in a control board, we'll weigh the part cost against the hob's age and tell you honestly when replacement is the better call. Parts are identified and quoted separately from labour — we never fit components you haven't agreed to.

Using the hob in the meantime

It's reasonable to keep using the working zones, with two caveats. First, don't keep retrying the dead ring — repeated attempts at a shorted or damaged element only stress the wiring further. Second, if you notice any burning smell, scorch marks on the glass around that zone, or the breaker tripping, stop using the hob entirely and switch it off at the isolator until it's been checked.

A note on older hobs

If the hob is more than a decade old, it's worth thinking about the repair in context. Elements for older models can still be available, but they take longer to source and cost more relative to the appliance's value. We'll tell you where your model sits on that curve during diagnosis, so a decision to repair is made with the age and parts outlook in front of you rather than discovered after the fact. If replacement ever becomes the sensible route, we can quote fitting a new hob as a separate, clearly priced job.

Booking your repair

When you get in touch, mention the hob's brand and model number, whether it's ceramic, induction or another type, and how the fault behaves — one ring only, whether the controls respond, and anything unusual that happened when it failed, such as a smell or a trip. This helps us plan the visit properly. You can book by phone or on the website; we'll confirm the booking fee, the hourly rate based on how soon you need us, and the appointment. Any repair is quoted in full and only starts once you've approved it.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When one cooking zone dies but the rest of the hob carries on, the fault is usually local to that zone rather than a whole-appliance failure. That's often repairable, but only once the actual cause is known. We test the dead ring properly and give you a clear, priced decision before any work starts.

Questions people ask about one ring not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is a single dead zone something I can repair myself?

No. A hob zone is fed from inside the appliance at potentially lethal voltage, and diagnosing it means resistance and continuity tests on live-isolated components. You can safely check the obvious outside factors — the control setting, a lock function, whether the pan suits the zone — but leave the internals to an engineer.

What could be wrong with just one ring?

Commonly a failed heating element, a burnt-out connector or a fault in the zone selector or control board. On induction hobs it can also be the coil driver electronics for that zone. Each has a different repair cost, which is why testing comes first.

Do you carry spare hob elements?

Hob elements and connectors are model-specific, so we identify the exact part during diagnosis and quote it separately before ordering. That keeps the labour transparent and avoids fitting parts you haven't approved.

Can a dead ring damage the rest of the hob?

Usually the fault stays contained, but a burnt connector or shorting element can affect neighbouring wiring if left in use. It's best to stop using the affected zone and have it looked at rather than hoping it settles down.

What will the visit cost me?

There's a booking fee paid when you book, plus an hourly labour rate that depends on how quickly you need the visit. After diagnosis you receive a full quote for the repair, approved by you before work begins, with parts priced separately.
