Noise is the most common reason people stop using their extractor fan, which is a shame because the fan is exactly what the bathroom or kitchen needs. The type of noise is genuinely diagnostic – different sounds point to different causes – so it's worth listening carefully before the visit and describing what you hear.
What different fan noises usually mean
A rattling or buzzing that changes with fan speed often means loose fixings – the fan body vibrating against the ceiling or wall, or the cover rattling in its fittings. A whirring or scraping that has built up gradually usually points to dust and grime on the impeller blades unbalancing them, or grime on the casing. A flapping or clicking noise at start-up, especially from outside, is typically a backdraught flap rattling in the wind or moving loosely on its pivot. A deeper hum or drone that's always been there may simply be an undersized or poorly mounted fan, or noise transmitted through the duct. A grinding noise is different and more serious – it suggests bearing wear or the impeller contacting the casing – and is covered more fully in our grinding-noise diagnosis.
Simple things worth trying first
With the fan isolated at the switch, you can check whether the outer cover is seated properly and gently reseat it – a surprising number of noise complaints end there. Cleaning accumulated dust off the cover and grille also helps. Don't remove the fan body from its mountings or put anything into the impeller; fans contain moving parts and live connections behind the cover, and internal work needs the unit properly isolated.
How we diagnose fan noise
Our engineer runs the fan and identifies the noise source by ear and by touch – checking mounting security, cover fit, impeller balance and cleanliness, backdraught flap movement, and how the fan couples to the duct. We also consider noise transmission: a correctly working fan can still be heard through thin ceilings or badly supported ducting, and sometimes the answer is better isolation mountings rather than any repair to the fan itself.
Typical fixes and their costs
Reseating and tightening mountings is quick. A professional clean of impeller and casing often eliminates whirring caused by unbalanced build-up, and a cleaned fan extracts better too. A worn or loose backdraught flap is replaced cheaply. Where the fan itself is old, noisy by design or genuinely worn, we'll suggest a quieter modern replacement – many current fans are dramatically quieter than units installed a decade ago – quoted with fitting for your approval before ordering.
When noise means more than annoyance
If the noise is accompanied by a smell of hot dust or plastic, the fan slowing or stopping intermittently, or any burning smell, treat it as more than a nuisance and get it looked at promptly – those combinations suggest a motor or electrical issue rather than a simple rattle.
Noise through the structure
Sometimes the fan is fine and the noise travels. Sound passes readily through thin ceilings, short duct runs and rigid mountings, so a healthy fan can drone annoyingly in the room below. Where that's the diagnosis, the answer lies in isolation mountings, a check of the duct support, or simply choosing a quieter replacement model – all of which we can assess and quote.
Booking your noise diagnosis
Tell us the room, roughly when the noise started, what kind of sound it is, and whether it happens constantly or only at start-up. Same-day visits may be available. We'll identify the source, explain the fix, and quote before starting any work.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A loud extractor fan defeats its own purpose – you end up not using it, and moisture problems follow. The good news is that most fan noise comes from straightforward causes like dust on the impeller, loose fixings or a rattling flap, and they're usually fixable without replacing the whole unit. We diagnose the noise and quote the quietest sensible fix.

Questions people ask about noisy extractor fan
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I do anything safe about a rattling fan?
Yes – with the fan switched off at the isolator, check the outer cover is seated correctly and reseat it, and wipe dust off the grille. Don't remove the fan body or reach inside the casing: live connections and moving parts sit behind the cover, and internal work needs proper isolation.
What causes a fan to get noisier over time?
Most often it's gradual dust and grime build-up unbalancing the impeller, or fixings and mountings working loose with vibration. A backdraught flap can also wear and start rattling. All of these are fixable, usually without replacing the fan, and a clean often improves extraction as well as quieting the noise.
When is a noisy fan a safety concern?
If noise comes with a smell of hot dust or plastic, grinding, intermittent stopping, or any burning smell, don't treat it as a nuisance – stop using the fan and get it checked. Grinding in particular suggests bearing wear or the impeller touching the casing, which will worsen and can overheat the motor.
Would a new fan be quieter than fixing the old one?
Often yes – modern fans are significantly quieter than many older units, and if your fan is worn, badly designed or badly mounted, replacement can be the better long-term answer. We'll be honest about which option makes sense for your unit and quote a replacement with fitting separately so you can compare.
What does a noise diagnosis cost?
There's a booking fee paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After we identify the noise source you get a full quote covering the fix and any parts, and work only starts once you approve the cost.
