A blurry CCTV image is easy to dismiss as "just how the camera is" — right up until the day you actually need the footage and cannot make out what it shows. Image quality problems rarely fix themselves, and the causes range from a five-minute cleaning job to a camera nearing the end of its life. The good news is that most blur is diagnosable and much of it is genuinely fixable.
Why a camera image goes soft
The simplest cause is also the most common: dirt. External lenses collect dust, pollen, salt spray, spider webs and rain marks, all of which soften the image, and a spider web strung just in front of the lens can scatter the infrared light at night into a white haze. Focus is next: cameras can drift out of focus with vibration, temperature cycling or rough handling, and varifocal cameras that were never focused properly at installation stay soft forever. Settings matter too — the wrong exposure mode can make night footage grainy or day footage washed out, and aggressive compression settings save storage at the cost of detail. Finally, the camera itself can degrade: moisture inside the housing, a scratched lens, a failing sensor or a tired infrared illuminator all show up as image quality that slowly gets worse.
How we assess the image
Our engineer starts by looking at the image at full resolution, not through a compressed phone app, because app quality hides as much as it shows. We inspect and clean the lens and housing properly, check for internal condensation or physical damage, and test focus across the camera's actual field of view, including at night when infrared is active. We review the camera's image settings — exposure, wide dynamic range, sharpness and the recorder's compression and resolution — and adjust them against what you actually want to see. By the end you know whether the problem was dirt, settings, focus or the camera itself.
Fixes and their limits
Cleaning, refocusing and setting corrections are done during the visit and often transform the picture. If the camera's housing has failed and let in moisture, we will replace the housing or the camera, quoted separately before fitting. If the sensor or infrared illuminator has genuinely degraded, replacement is the realistic option and we will say so plainly — we will not sell endless adjustments to a dying camera. It is honest to note the limits of any CCTV: image quality depends on light, distance and weather, and no camera reads number plates or faces in every condition. We will tell you what your setup can realistically deliver rather than overpromising.
Footage you can use, used properly
Sharper footage is more useful footage, but it is still personal data and the owner remains responsible for handling it lawfully and considerately. Cameras should cover your own property and avoid unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, and clips should be shared only appropriately — for instance with the police if they ask about an incident. We configure the equipment and will flag placements that reach beyond your boundary, but legal questions are not something we advise on.
Aftercare
A clean lens is a temporary state — external cameras benefit from a lens wipe every few months, and after storms or spells of wet weather. If you clean the lens and the image stays soft, that is a useful diagnostic fact worth telling us. Avoid adjusting focus rings or opening housings yourself: modern cameras are easily mis-focused and opened housings lose their weather sealing.
When to call us
Book a visit when cleaning does not help, or when you would rather we checked every camera in one visit. Tell us which cameras look poor, whether it is worse by day or night, and what you most need the footage to show. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Footage only has value if you can actually see what it shows, and a soft, blurry or washed-out picture undermines the whole point of having cameras. Blur has many causes, and most of them are fixable without replacing everything. Our engineer works through lens condition, focus, settings and camera health to get the image back to something worth watching.

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about blurry cctv image
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I clean the camera lenses myself?
Yes — a soft, lint-free cloth and gentle wiping of the outer lens is sensible DIY, and it is the first thing we would suggest. Do not open the housing, adjust focus rings or use abrasive cleaners, as opened housings lose weather sealing and mis-focused cameras need professional refocusing.
What do you actually check on a blurry-image visit?
We view the image at full resolution, clean and inspect the lens and housing for damage or condensation, test focus across the field of view including at night with infrared, and review the camera and recorder settings for exposure and compression problems. Then we tell you which of those was the cause.
Is a blurry image a safety or coverage problem I should worry about?
It is a coverage problem: footage you cannot read is not doing its job. It is also worth remembering that better footage is still personal data — the owner is responsible for using it lawfully, respecting neighbours' privacy, avoiding unnecessary coverage of public space and sharing clips only appropriately.
Why is my picture fine by day but hazy at night?
That pattern usually points to the infrared illuminator or something scattering its light — a spider web, dirt or moisture in front of the lens is the classic cause, since infrared makes them glow. It can also be an ageing illuminator or incorrect night settings, and our diagnosis will tell you which it is.
How much does this kind of visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
