A sensor system is configured once and then tends to drift slowly out of alignment with the household it serves. The dog arrives and starts tripping the lounge sensor. The loft conversion adds a room nobody zoned. The kitchen renovation moves the back door. A new doorbell or router reorganises the wireless landscape. None of these break the system, but each makes it work less well — more nuisance alarms, awkward entry times, or coverage that no longer matches the openings that matter. Reconfiguration is the disciplined answer: rather than tolerating nuisance alarms or muting zones, we adjust the system's configuration to the home as it stands today.
What can be reconfigured
More than most owners realise. Zones can be renamed so the panel and app say what actually happened and where. Sensor groups can be reorganised — partitions and modes so that, for example, night setting watches downstairs while day setting watches everything. Entry and exit delays can be matched to the doors and routines you actually have, rather than the defaults the installer left. Motion sensor sensitivity and, where the hardware supports it, pet-tolerance settings can be adjusted within manufacturer limits. Which sensors are active in which mode can be changed, so a room you now use differently behaves differently. Wireless devices can be re-paired, moved to different zones, or re-sited within the configuration. What cannot be reconfigured into fitness is hardware in the wrong place for its job — a motion sensor facing a sunny window stays a problem whatever the settings — so part of our job is knowing when the honest answer is moving or replacing a device rather than tweaking it.
How we approach it
We start with how you live now: who uses which doors, when the house is empty, where pets go, which rooms changed and what nuisance alarms have been happening. From that we propose the configuration changes in plain terms — you approve the plan before we touch settings, because configuration is personal to your household. The changes are then applied one at a time and tested live: sensitivity changes walked against the panel, entry delays timed against your actual routine, new zone groupings exercised through each set and unset mode. A reconfigured system that has not been tested is just a different guess. We also record the final configuration with you as we go, so the household knows exactly what changed and why — useful the next time something in the home changes again.
Honest limits
Configuration can solve a great deal, but it has boundaries we will state plainly. Sensitivity adjustments work within what the manufacturer built into the hardware — they cannot make a sensor pet-proof, and no setting can promise an alarm never false-triggers in every condition. Changing timers cannot compensate for a door layout that does not suit the system's design. And reconfiguration on smart systems can be constrained by the manufacturer's app and firmware, which we do not control. Where a real fix lies outside configuration — a sensor that needs re-siting, a device that needs replacing — we will say so and quote that separately rather than bury it in settings.
Booking a reconfiguration
Call or use the website and describe what has changed in the home and what the system is doing that annoys you — nuisance alarms, awkward delays, zones you no longer trust. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.
Book the slot
Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Homes change: a new pet, a converted loft, a reworked kitchen, a teenager with different hours — and a sensor system configured for the old home quietly stops fitting. Reconfiguration is about making the equipment match your life as it is now. We plan the changes with you, apply them, and test each one.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about sensor reconfiguration
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I reconfigure sensors myself?
Many panels and apps let you rename zones, adjust chime settings and change some timers yourself, and that is reasonable DIY where the manual covers it. Deeper changes — partition logic, sensitivity within manufacturer limits, re-pairing, mode behaviour — are best done properly and tested live, because an untested configuration change can disable coverage you were relying on.
What do you check and change on the visit?
We review how you use the home now, then rework zone names, groupings, entry and exit delays, sensitivity and mode behaviour as appropriate — with your approval on the plan first. Every change is tested live, including walk tests and timed entry and exit, before we call it done.
Is there any risk in changing the configuration?
The risk is in untested changes: a setting applied without a walk test can leave a zone out of service or an entry delay that locks you out of your own routine. We change and verify step by step, so you are never left with a system behaving differently from what was agreed.
Can reconfiguration stop my dog setting the alarm off?
Often, yes — pet-tolerance settings, sensor re-aiming, adjusting which zones arm in which mode, or repositioning the sensor handle many pet situations. But no configuration makes a sensor completely pet-proof, and if the placement itself is the problem we will say so and quote moving or changing the hardware rather than promise settings can fix it.
How is reconfiguration priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the reconfiguration is quoted and approved before we start, and any parts — a new sensor, a repeater — are quoted separately.
