Causes
A new sink is often needed during a room update, after damage to an old basin or when a different layout better suits how the space is used. Some installations are like-for-like, while others involve a new bowl size, a different mounting style or altered tap and waste positions. These differences matter: a sink that fits the opening can still leave pipework misaligned or make the waste trap difficult to reach.
Before buying a basin, check its overall dimensions, depth, mounting method and the position of the tap hole and waste. Kitchen sinks may need to match a worktop cut-out and cabinet space. Bathroom basins can be wall-hung, supported by a pedestal or fitted into a vanity unit. The basin, taps, waste and any overflow components must be compatible. If you already have the new sink, keep its fitting instructions and parts available for the assessment.
Why it worsens
A rushed installation can create problems that appear only after regular use. An uneven basin may rock or place pressure on its seal. A poorly aligned waste can put strain on joints, while an inaccessible trap makes later clearing or inspection awkward. Gaps around the fitting may allow splashes to reach the cabinet or worktop. If a replacement basin has different dimensions, an old opening or support may not hold it safely.
Using the sink before sealant or connections are ready can also introduce water where it should not go. Avoid assuming that every old fitting will transfer to a new basin: worn connections, incompatible waste parts or a damaged isolation valve may need attention. These points are best identified before the installation rather than after the new sink is in place.
How we diagnose
We begin by looking at the room, current sink and accessible plumbing. We check the opening or mounting surface, supports, tap arrangement, waste route, water connections and available space beneath the basin. If you have selected a sink, we can use its dimensions and fitting details to discuss whether it suits the existing layout. Tell us whether taps, waste fittings or the cabinet are also being changed.
We will identify visible issues that could affect the fit, such as damaged worktop edges, awkward pipe alignment or limited access, and explain what is outside the basic fitting. It is a reference from the service entry, not a guarantee that a particular installation will take exactly that long or include extra materials, alterations or repair to surrounding surfaces. We will clarify the scope before work begins.
How we fix
Once the plan and parts are agreed, we isolate the relevant water supply where required and remove the existing basin or sink if this is part of the agreed work. We prepare the mounting area, position the new sink and secure it using a method suited to its design. We connect the taps and waste, checking that the pipework is aligned and that the trap remains accessible. Any sealing is applied where appropriate to the sink and surface.
We then restore the supply and test the taps, waste and overflow where fitted. The checks look for leaks at connections and confirm that water drains as expected. If a problem with the existing supply, waste route, cabinet or worktop becomes apparent, we explain it and discuss options before carrying out additional work. A plumbing fit does not include unagreed building, worktop cutting or decoration.
Prevention
Use the sink in line with its care guidance and avoid leaning heavily on a basin that is not designed to take body weight. Keep stored items from pressing against the trap or water connections. Check the cupboard or vanity after the first few uses for dampness, and do not leave a leak to soak into the unit. Keep fitting instructions and details of compatible replacement parts for future maintenance.
When to call
Arrange an assessment if you are unsure whether a chosen sink will fit, if the existing basin is cracked or loose, or if the water connections are old or difficult to reach. Call promptly if a newly fitted sink leaks, moves or drains poorly. Turn off the relevant isolation valve if safe and practical, and avoid using the basin if water is escaping into the cabinet or wall.
Book a call-out
If you are planning a new sink installation, share the sink type, dimensions if known and whether you want the taps or waste changed as well. Maintenance Men can inspect the site, explain the plumbing work and confirm a suitable scope before fitting. Contact us to book a call-out and discuss your installation. A clear conversation before the appointment helps identify parts or access details that may affect the job, while the on-site check confirms what the space requires.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A new basin can refresh a kitchen or bathroom, but a neat fit depends on more than placing it in the opening. The waste, tap connections, supports and surrounding worktop all need to suit the sink and be accessible for future maintenance. Maintenance Men can assess the existing arrangement, fit the sink and test the plumbing connections.

Questions people ask about new sink installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can you fit a sink that I have already bought?
Yes, the plumber can assess a customer-supplied sink, provided its fittings and dimensions suit the space. Keep the installation instructions and supplied parts available so compatibility can be checked.
Do you also fit taps and the waste?
The service listing describes sink installation including fittings, but the exact scope depends on the parts and existing plumbing. Tell us what you want changed so this can be discussed before work starts.
Will a new sink fit the existing worktop opening?
That depends on the sink dimensions, mounting style and condition of the opening. Check measurements before purchase, and have the area assessed if the cut-out or cabinet looks damaged or unusual.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
How can I check the installation afterwards?
Run water and look beneath the sink for drips at the supply and waste connections. Check that the basin feels secure and that water drains normally; contact a plumber if you notice movement, leaks or persistent pooling.
