What counts as a major pipe failure
A major failure is a pipe that is no longer containing water: a split along a seam, a joint blown apart, a corroded section that has finally gone through, or a pipe pierced by a nail or a drill. It differs from a weep or a dripping tap because the volume is uncontrolled and the water is going somewhere it should not — into a ceiling, a wall cavity, a floor void or an electrical enclosure. The distinction matters because the response is different. You are not tuning a system, you are stopping a loss.
What causes it
Age and corrosion account for most of what we see. Old galvanised steel rusts from the inside until the wall is paper thin, and copper develops pinholes where water has been aggressive or flux was left on the surface. Frost is the next big one: water expands as it freezes and splits the pipe lengthways, and the split only shows when it thaws, which is why a frozen pipe burst repair often looks like a leak that appeared from nowhere overnight. Joints made in a hurry fail under pressure cycling, and compression fittings work loose on pipe that vibrates. Then there is plain accident — a screw through a floorboard, a cable clip, a fitter's drill.
Why it gets worse so quickly
Water follows structure. It runs along joists, through insulation and down the inside of a wall until it finds a light fitting or a ceiling board. Plasterboard softens, ceilings sag, flooring lifts, and whatever is stored below is soaked. Damp in a void starts mould within days. And because the leak is often above the place you notice it, the visible patch is rarely where the pipe failed — which is how a small weep becomes a major pipe failure repair with a drying bill attached. That is why the priority is isolation, not investigation.
How we diagnose it
First we confirm you have found the stopcock and get the supply off. Then we trace: moisture readings, a look at the pipe routes, and where necessary a short pressure test on an isolated section to prove which run is losing water. We check the obvious culprits first — appliance hoses, flexi tails, service valves, joints under sinks and in airing cupboards — because a fair number of "pipe failures" turn out to be a failed flexible connector. Once we know the run, we plan the repair around what can be reached without demolishing more than necessary.
How we fix it
We drain the affected section, cut back to sound pipe and rebuild it. That means new copper or plastic of the right size, proper fittings, and support so the repair is not hanging off the joint. Where a long run is corroded we replace the run rather than patching it three times. Then we refill slowly, vent, and test under working pressure while you watch. We also check that the isolators and the stopcock actually work, because a stopcock that will not close turns the next small leak into the same emergency again.
Preventing the next one
Know where your stopcock is and exercise it twice a year so it does not seize. Lag pipes in lofts, garages and outbuildings before winter. Replace flexible tap connectors and washing machine hoses at the first sign of bulging or rust. If the property still has galvanised steel runs, plan their replacement rather than waiting for them to fail one at a time. A short annual check costs far less than a ceiling.
When to call us
Call immediately if water is running and you cannot stop it, if the leak is near electrics, or if a ceiling is bulging. Turn the stopcock off, open the cold taps to drain down, and keep people out of the room below. If the stopcock is closed but water still flows, there may be a second supply or a failed isolator, and that is a job for us rather than for guesswork. If you are searching for a burst pipe plumber near me while water is coming through a ceiling, ring rather than read on. For anything less urgent, a booked visit is cheaper than an emergency pipe repair at midnight, and far cheaper than our emergency plumber burst pipe rates on a bank holiday. In a cold snap we also run a pipe thawing service, which is usually the cheaper way to deal with a frozen run before it splits.
Book a call-out
Ring the office, tell us where the water is, and we will tell you what to do while we are on the way. If you are claiming on insurance, ask for a written report with photographs — we provide both as standard.

How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When a pipe lets go, water does the damage long before the repair begins. Our first job is to stop it at the stopcock and protect what sits below; the second is to cut out the failed section and rebuild it so it holds under pressure. No guesswork, no repeat visits.

Questions people ask about major pipe failure repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do first while I wait for you?
Turn off the stopcock and open the cold taps to take the pressure out of the system. Move anything valuable out of the room below and stay clear of ceilings that are bulging. If water is anywhere near a light fitting or socket, switch that circuit off at the consumer unit.
Will you have the parts with you?
We carry common copper and plastic fittings, couplings, isolators and flexi connectors on the van, which covers most domestic failures. An unusual pipe size or an old steel run may need a parts run, and we will tell you if that is the case rather than improvising.
Can you deal with the water damage too?
We stop the leak and make the pipe good, and we can take moisture readings and photographs for your insurer. Drying and plastering are separate trades, and we will say plainly where our work ends rather than promising a full reinstatement.
Is two hours realistic?
For a straightforward split or failed joint on accessible pipework, yes. Concealed runs, solid floors or a second leak on the same visit take longer, and we will agree the extra time with you before we carry on.
Will my insurance cover it?
That depends on your policy and on the cause — escape of water is often covered, gradual corrosion is often not. We provide dated photographs and a written description of what failed, which is what a loss adjuster will ask for.
