Water overflowing at the roof edge is one of the most misunderstood roof symptoms. Homeowners often assume the roof is leaking, when in fact the roof is doing its job and the water is simply not leaving it properly. Conversely, water backing up at the eaves can be quietly getting under tile laps and into the roof space, so it is never a symptom to ignore. Diagnosis first, as always.
Why water overflows the roof edge
Blocked gutters and outlets are the overwhelming common cause — moss from the roof, leaves, roof tile grit and a decade of deposits turn a gutter into a planter, and water then spills everywhere but the downpipe. A gutter set at the wrong level or pitch spills over its front edge even when clean. Undersized or insufficient downpipes struggle in heavy rain. Valley and verge details can direct water past the gutter line entirely. And where tiles or slates overhang too little, or a fascia has rotted and dropped, water can run behind the gutter instead of into it. Each cause produces a slightly different overflow pattern, which is a useful diagnostic clue.
How we diagnose it
We look at where and when the overflow happens: along a whole run, pointing to a blocked or undersized gutter; at a specific point, pointing to a sag, a wrong level or a failed joint; or only in driving rain, pointing to capacity. We check the gutter condition, brackets, joints and falls, the downpipe flow, the fascia and soffit beneath — rotting timber is both a symptom and a cause — and the tile overhang and eaves detail where water may be getting behind the gutter. Access is by ladder and appropriate equipment; we will not improvise unsafe access.
The fixes
Clearing gutters, outlets and downpipes is often the whole answer and is quoted as the routine job it is. Where gutters are incorrectly set, we re-level and re-pitch them on sound brackets. Rotten fascias are replaced and gutters re-hung correctly. Where capacity is the issue in a heavy-rain area, we will discuss additional outlets or downpipes honestly. And where water is getting behind the gutter into the eaves — the case that matters most for the roof itself — the eaves detail, underlay and tile overhang get the attention, and we will show you what we found. All work is quoted and approved before we start.
What overflow does if ignored
Water spilling down walls soaks brickwork and renders, feeds damp into the house, stains and rots fascias and soffits, and erodes the ground below. Water backing up under tile laps wets the underlay and roof timbers — the start of leaks that show up indoors months later. A blocked gutter is a trivial job; the damage it causes is not.
Aftercare
Gutters need clearing seasonally in leafy areas, and autumn is the critical time. After the work, watch a couple of heavy rains — a correctly flowing gutter should handle rain without spilling at edges or joints. If overflow reappears, tell us early; a new overflow after a fix means something else is going on and we will come back to diagnose it.

When water pours off the roof edge instead of into the gutter, the roof covering is often fine and the drainage is failing — or water is backing up under the tiles. Either way it soaks walls, rots fascias and finds its way indoors. Our visit diagnoses which it is and quotes the work that stops it.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about roof edge water overflow
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I clear my own gutters to stop the overflow?
Clearing gutters from a secure ladder is reasonable DIY for confident people — with someone footing the ladder and never overreaching. But if the overflow continues after clearing, or water is getting behind the gutter, the cause is elsewhere and needs diagnosing. Two-storey or awkward access is genuinely professional territory.
What do you check when water overflows the roof edge?
The gutters for blockages, level, pitch and condition, the downpipes and outlets, the fascias and soffits for rot, the gutter brackets, and the eaves detail where water may be running behind the gutter instead of into it. The pattern of the overflow tells us which of these is the real cause.
Could the overflowing water be getting into my roof?
Yes — this is the serious version. Water backing up at the eaves can run under tile laps and wet the underlay and timbers, leading to leaks that appear indoors months later. That is why we check the eaves detail and underlay as part of the diagnosis rather than just clearing the gutter.
Why does my gutter overflow only in very heavy rain?
Usually capacity — the gutter or downpipe arrangement is undersized for intense rainfall, or a partially blocked outlet restricts flow just enough to fail in downpours. We assess flow and capacity and will discuss additional outlets or downpipes honestly if that is the realistic fix.
What does fixing roof edge overflow cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before work starts, so you approve it before any tools come out, with parts quoted separately.
