Frost is the slow demolition contractor of the British driveway. It does not build anything; it just finds every drop of water sitting in a crack, a joint or a porous surface, turns it to ice, expands it by about nine per cent, and pries the material apart. Do that a few hundred times a winter and a hairline crack becomes a broken bay. This page explains how freeze-thaw damages driveways, how we assess what yours has suffered, and what repairs and preparation actually reduce the damage next winter.

What frost damage looks like

The classic signs are easy to recognise. Spalling — the surface flaking or pitting away on concrete, often in patches where water has soaked in — leaves a rough, crumbling skin over sound material below. Cracks that widen noticeably over winter are frost working on water that is getting in. Individual slabs or blocks that have lifted or tipped are classic frost heave, where water freezing in the ground beneath has pushed the surface up unevenly. Tarmac that has gone brittle and is shedding loose chippings is a surface at the end of its binder life being finished off by frost. And potholes that appear over one hard cold spell are water-filled cracks that froze and broke through. One frosty winter rarely destroys a drive; it reveals and accelerates whatever water paths already existed.

How we assess the damage

We distinguish between surface damage and damage that reaches the base, because the repairs differ completely. Spalled or cracked surface material with a sound, dry base underneath is a surface repair job. Lifted slabs and frost heave point at water in the ground beneath, so we check falls and drainage to find where the water is getting under the surface. Widespread cracking and crumbling tells us to check the base as well. Throughout, we are mapping the water paths — because frost damage is really water damage, and the honest fix always includes stopping the water from getting where it froze.

Repair options

Surface repairs come first: spalled areas cleaned and repaired, cracks sealed with flexible filler so they stop drinking water, lifted slabs re-levelled on fresh bedding, and loose or failed edges rebuilt. Where the base has been affected — heaved, softened or washed — the section needs excavating and rebuilding with compacted layers and, importantly, the drainage corrected so the new base stays dry. On older surfaces that frost has finished off broadly, we will say plainly when patching is uneconomical and resurfacing or replacement is the better investment; that larger project is quoted after survey. Every repair is timed around the weather: frost damage work needs suitable conditions, and we schedule sensibly and tell you plainly when the weather must delay work rather than seal water into a repair that cannot cure.

Preparation beats repair

The most valuable frost work is done in autumn, not after winter: sealing cracks so they cannot fill with water, clearing channels and gullies so water leaves the surface instead of sitting on it, and correcting falls and dips so nothing pools. A drive that sheds water loses very little to frost; a drive that collects it loses material every winter. If your assessment finds water paths, fixing them is the part that protects the rest of the surface.

Honest limits

We do not guarantee that frost will never touch the drive again — British winters will see to that — and we do not guarantee against future weathering. What we do is repair the damage properly, cut off the water paths that fed it, and tell you which maintenance each autumn will keep the surface sound.

Before we arrive

Note which areas spalled, lifted or cracked over the winter and photograph them — comparisons with previous years are useful. Clear standing water and loose debris from the worst areas, and keep vehicles off freshly damaged patches where the surface is crumbling underfoot.

Booking and costs

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of repairs is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately; resurfacing or replacement of a badly frost-damaged drive is a quoted project after survey. When you book, tell us the surface type, roughly how old it is and what this winter did to it — photos of the worst spots help us plan the visit.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Every winter, water gets into small defects in a driveway, freezes, expands and leaves a bigger defect behind. If this year's frost has left your drive spalled, cracked or lifted, our visit assesses the damage honestly — surface wear, water paths or base trouble — and sets out the repair that will survive the next freeze.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about freeze damage to driveway

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I repair frost damage to my driveway myself?

Sealing a clean, dry crack with flexible filler before winter is a sensible DIY job and we will point out which cracks qualify. What DIY cannot do well is repair spalled concrete so it bonds and lasts, re-level frost-heaved slabs on sound bedding, or find the water path that is feeding the damage. Repairs done onto damp, cracked or soft material fail the following winter — which is why an assessment first is worth the visit.

What do you check when assessing frost damage?

We look at whether the damage is surface-only — spalling, cracking, chipping — or has reached the base through heave, dips and soft spots. We trace where water is getting in and sitting, check falls, edges and drainage, and then explain plainly which repairs will hold and whether the surface is worth patching or ready for resurfacing.

Is frost damage dangerous?

It can be. Spalled concrete sheds loose material, lifted slabs create trip edges, and potholes catch wheels and feet — all worse in icy weather when people are least stable anyway. Keep the worst areas clear until assessed, and treat any new pothole or lifted slab as worth prompt attention before the next freeze makes it bigger.

Will the repairs survive the next winter?

Repairs done properly — onto sound, dry material with the water paths cut off — have every chance of lasting, but we do not guarantee against future frost or weathering, and no honest contractor would. What we do is repair the cause along with the symptom, use materials suited to external freeze-thaw conditions, and tell you what autumn maintenance protects the surface each year.

How much does it cost to repair frost damage?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repairs is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. If the assessment shows the surface is beyond economical patching, resurfacing or replacement is quoted after survey so you see the real scope before committing.
