Stair lifts are deliberately sensitive to anything on the track. The footplate's safety edges are designed to stop the lift the instant they touch an obstruction, protecting anything — or anyone — in its path. So when a lift refuses to pass a certain point, the most common explanation is also the most reassuring one: something is in the way, and the lift is behaving exactly as it should.

What ends up on stair lift rails

Homes are full of things that migrate onto a staircase rail: dropped scarves and dressing-gown belts, slippers and shoes left on the tread edge, reading glasses, TV remotes, cat toys, and the grit, crumbs and pet hair that accumulate along any edge. Renovation and cleaning leave their own debris — carpet fitters' tacks and staples, vacuum cleaner attachments, the corner of a runner rug that has shifted. Outside the rail itself, things beside it matter too: a newel post knocked by furniture, a radiator valve that sits too close, a door that opens across the bottom of the stairs, or a box stored on a landing tread.

What happens when an obstruction stops the lift

When the safety edge touches something, the lift halts and usually beeps or flashes to say why. Repeatedly pressing the button will not help and should not be tried. If the obstruction is soft or pressed hard, the sensor may stay latched until it is cleared and the lift is reset. And if the lift stopped with someone aboard, the sequence is always the same: keep them safe, comfortable and calm first, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use a manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift.

Checks you can safely do

Walk the staircase and look — really look — along the rail and the edges of every tread the lift travels over. Remove anything resting on the rail, check the underside of the footplate edge for a tangled rug corner, and clear items from adjacent treads. With the obstruction gone, most lifts resume once reset per the manual. One caution: if the lift struck something solid, the footplate edge, rail or carriage may have taken a knock even if it now seems to run — an inspection is worth booking to be sure.

How we clear and inspect

We first confirm the cause by inspecting where the lift stopped and what the safety edges and sensors recorded. We clear the obstruction, examine the safety edges and footplate for damage, check the rail surface and profile along its full length for dents or displaced sections, and verify the lift's sensors still respond correctly by testing them gently. If the lift runs, we complete full travel cycles under realistic conditions to confirm the stop was purely obstruction-related and nothing has been knocked out of adjustment. If anything was damaged — a bent edge, a misaligned rail section — we quote that repair in full for your approval before doing it, using manufacturer-approved parts.

Prevention that actually works

A few habits prevent most obstruction stops: a firm rule that nothing is ever left on the stairs, even briefly; a regular sweep of the treads and rail line; securing or removing stair runners near the rail; and keeping pets' toys and clutter off the landing edges. If your household includes grandchildren or pets, the rail will find their belongings — an extra sweep on busy days is cheap insurance.

When it is not an obstruction

If you have cleared the stairs thoroughly and the lift still halts at the same point, the cause is likely a failing sensor, a worn roller, debris inside the rail profile itself or a weak battery — all of which need proper diagnosis. Do not keep resetting a lift that stops at the same spot; each unexplained stop is a reason to book a visit. And if the lift behaves erratically, trips the electrics or smells of burning, stop using it entirely until checked.

Booking

Tell us the make and model, where the lift stops, and what you found when you checked. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Even a small object on or near the rail can stop a stair lift dead — that is the safety system working as designed. Our visit clears the blockage properly, checks nothing was damaged by the stop, and makes sure the lift runs freely again.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about rail obstruction issue

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I just move the object and carry on using the lift?

If the obstruction was clearly soft or loose and the lift now runs normally through a full journey, that is reasonable. But if the lift hit something solid, or still halts at the same point after the stairs are completely clear, book an inspection — the safety edges, rail or sensors may have been affected.

What do you check after an obstruction stop?

We inspect the safety edges and footplate for damage, examine the rail along its full length, test the sensors' response, and run complete travel cycles under load to confirm nothing was knocked out of adjustment. Any repair found necessary is quoted in full for your approval before we start.

Is it safe to test the safety edges by pressing them?

Testing them gently with your hand while seated clear of the lift is how we verify they respond, but never test them by standing on the stairs in the lift's path or by letting the lift run into an object deliberately. Repeated hard impacts can damage the sensors and the mechanism.

My lift stops even though I can't see anything on the rail — why?

The obstruction may be inside the rail profile where you cannot see, a safety sensor may have become over-sensitive or damaged, or the lift may be pausing for a different reason such as a weak battery. That is exactly the situation to book in — repeated stops at the same spot are never worth resetting blindly.

What does the visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. After we have diagnosed what is needed we quote the full cost, which you approve before work starts, and parts are quoted separately.
