A wall takes plenty of punishment over the years — a knock from the hoover, a scrape from moving furniture, a chunk gone where a fitting pulled away, or a dent where something heavy tipped over. The repair is often straightforward, but making the patch genuinely invisible takes judgement: knowing what the wall is made of, choosing a filler that suits it, and giving the repair the time it needs to dry and settle before anyone picks up a paintbrush.
What wall damage repair involves
Wall damage comes in all sizes. There are small dents and gouges that only affect the skim coat, larger areas where plaster has crumbled away, and holes left behind by removed fittings or old fixings. Each needs a slightly different approach. A shallow dent might need a single application of fine filler, sanded back flush. A deeper chip may need building up in layers, because filler shrinks as it dries and a single thick application will sink below the surface and crack.
We also look at the cause. If the damage came from a leak, a banging door, or a fixture that keeps working loose, patching alone will not solve it — the source of the problem has to be dealt with, or the repair fails within months.
How we assess the damage
Before any filler comes out, we check three things. First, the wall construction: solid brick or block, plasterboard on a timber or metal frame, or dot-and-dab board glued to the wall — they all repair differently. Second, the depth and extent of the damage, including whether the surrounding plaster is still sound or whether tapping reveals hollow, blown patches that need cutting back. Third, whether anything else is going on: staining that suggests damp, cracking that suggests movement, or a wall that feels cold and soft.
If we find damage that looks structural, or damp that keeps returning, we stop and tell you plainly that it needs a specialist diagnosis rather than a cosmetic patch.
How the repair is carried out
The typical process is: rake back or cut out any loose material to a sound edge, brush out the dust, damp or prime as the filler manufacturer advises, then apply the right material — fine filler for small defects, patching plaster or a bonding-style fill for deeper losses. Deep fills are built up in layers with drying time between them. Once everything is fully dry, the area is sanded back flush with the surrounding wall, and the dust is cleared away.
Older properties deserve a word of caution. In older plaster we may encounter materials such as textured coatings that require careful handling, and we will not disturb anything we suspect could contain asbestos — that needs a licensed specialist, and we would flag it before starting.
What the estimate covers
A typical visit covers the assessment and the repair of the damaged areas you have described. Deep fills and drying time can stretch things: if the repair needs a second layer the following day, we will explain the plan and the timing before we start. If materials beyond basic filler are needed — patching plaster, board, tape — they are identified and quoted separately rather than assumed.
Decoration is not automatically included. Filling and sanding leaves a surface ready for paint, but colour matching and repainting are separate work that we can discuss when booking. On textured or papered walls, an exact finish match is not always possible, and we will say so honestly.
Aftercare
Once repaired, keep the area dry and undisturbed while the filler finishes curing. If you plan to paint, most fillers want a coat or two of primer or thinned emulsion first so the patch does not flash differently under the final colour.
When to call us
If a wall defect is getting worse, spreading, or paired with cracking or staining, get it looked at sooner rather than later. Same-day visits may be available for straightforward repairs. Book through maintenance-men.com: you pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and agreed with you before any work starts. If a repair needs a specialist instead of a handyman, we will tell you that rather than take the job on incorrectly.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A dented, scraped or chipped wall is one of those jobs that nags at you every time you walk past. The repair itself is often simple, but doing it so the patch disappears takes the right filler, proper drying and careful sanding. We sort it out properly rather than smearing filler over the top and hoping for the best.

Questions people ask about wall damage repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could I just fill the wall myself?
You can, and for a shallow dent a tub of filler and a scraper may do the trick. Where people usually struggle is with deep damage, crumbling plaster, or patches that flash differently under paint. If the wall is cracked, damp or hollow-sounding, a proper assessment first is the better move.
What do you check before starting a repair?
We check what the wall is made of, how deep the damage goes, and whether the plaster around it is still sound. We also look for signs that the damage has a cause — damp, movement, or a fitting that keeps failing. Anything that points to a structural or moisture problem is flagged before we fill anything.
Is there anything you would refuse to repair?
Yes — if a crack looks like structural movement, or there is ongoing water ingress, filling it would hide a real problem, so we stop and recommend the right specialist instead. We also will not disturb old textured coatings if we suspect they could contain asbestos; that needs a licensed contractor.
Will the repaired patch show under paint?
A properly dried, sanded fill should not show, but fresh filler absorbs paint differently from the old wall. Most patch areas need a primer or a full repaint of the wall to blend perfectly. On textured finishes, an exact match is harder, and we will tell you the realistic outcome before we begin.
How does the pricing work?
You pay a booking fee when you make the booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit — less notice usually means a higher rate. Before any work starts we quote the full cost for what you have agreed, and you approve it. Any extra materials beyond basic filler are identified and quoted separately.
