Why heavy pictures are a different job
There is a rule of thumb in this trade: the picture hooks sold in multipacks are for pictures you can lift with one hand. A large canvas with a deep frame, a print under glass or an ornate gilt frame can weigh several times more, and glass in particular turns an ordinary frame into a serious load. When something that heavy works free of the wall, it does not slide gently down — it comes off and lands on whatever is beneath it.
Heavy picture wall mounting exists because of that gap. The work is less about the hanging and more about the engineering: finding solid material behind the plaster, using fixings rated for the load, and spreading the weight across more than one point.
What we assess before drilling
We start with three questions. First, how heavy is the picture, and where are its hanging points — a central wire, two D-rings, or no fittings at all yet? Second, what is the wall made of? Solid brick or block, modern plasterboard over a timber frame, and older plaster all take different fixings, and the honest answer sometimes changes where the picture can go. Third, what is behind the surface? We plan sensible routes around sockets, switches, pipework and boiler areas; we cannot see through walls, so we avoid the places services usually run rather than rely on any gadget to promise us a clear path.
If the picture is very heavy and the wall is hollow where you want it, we say so plainly and talk through the options: a different position over a stud or solid section, a load-spreading arrangement, or in some cases a floor-standing solution. We would rather move a picture than watch a wall fail.
How we mount it
For most heavy frames the best method is two or more substantial fixing points rather than one central hook. On masonry we drill, plug and screw with anchors matched to the weight. On plasterboard we aim for the timber studs or noggin pieces, and where none line up we use quality hollow-wall anchors — honestly, and with a word about their limits for very heavy loads.
Where the frame has no suitable fittings, we can fit D-rings or heavy-duty mirror plates to the back, agreed with you in advance. Once the fixings are in, we lift the picture together — large frames are genuinely a two-person lift — seat it carefully, and check the level from both edges before we call it done.
What to have ready
Tell us the approximate weight and dimensions of the picture when you book, or have it accessible so we can weigh or measure it on arrival. Clear the wall and the floor beneath it, move furniture back, and if the picture is currently on the floor, leave it standing safely where we can get at it. If it is glass-fronted, a moment to agree how it will be carried saves a lot of worry.
Limits we work within
A visit is priced for a typical mounting job — one or a few heavy pieces with straightforward access. A staircase of oversized canvases or a wall needing scaffold-style access is a different visit, and we will say so when quoting. We do not carry out structural alterations, and we do not chase cables or move sockets to make a position work; if the electrics need changing, that is an electrician's job and we will tell you so.
Aftercare that keeps it up there
Check after a few weeks that the frame still sits level and the fixings have not eased. Think carefully about hanging very heavy frames above beds or sofas where someone sits directly beneath — the load deserves respect, and we will discuss the fixing engineering with you honestly. And if you ever redecorate, take the picture down rather than painting around it; the two minutes it takes protects both the frame and the finish.
Booking the visit
Call or book online and tell us the picture's rough size and weight, the wall type if you know it, and how soon you need us. Same-day slots may be available. You pay a booking fee when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how much notice you give, and we confirm the full cost for your approval before any drilling starts. If fixings or fittings are needed beyond what we have agreed, they are identified and quoted separately — nothing is added without your say-so.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A big framed canvas or a gilt-framed print can weigh as much as a small person, and the little picture hooks that suit a postcard frame will not hold it. Heavy pictures need heavier thinking: what the wall is made of, where the solid parts are, and how the weight is shared. We do that assessment first, then mount your picture so it is safe and square.

Questions people ask about heavy picture wall mounting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could I hang a heavy picture myself?
Possibly, if the wall is solid masonry, the picture came with proper fixings, and you have a helper. The risk grows with plasterboard walls, glass-fronted frames and anything over roughly ten kilograms, where the wrong fixing fails without warning and the fall damages both the frame and whatever sits beneath it. If you are unsure what the wall is made of, that uncertainty alone is a good reason to have it assessed.
What do you check before mounting a heavy picture?
We start with the picture's weight and hanging fittings, then establish what the wall is made of and where its solid fixing points are. We plan drill positions away from the usual routes of cables and pipes — we cannot see through walls, so we avoid the places services typically run. Nothing is drilled until you have approved the position.
What if my wall is plasterboard?
Plasterboard carries real weight only where fixings land on the timber studs or noggins inside the wall. Where those do not line up with your chosen position, we use quality hollow-wall anchors within their limits, or discuss moving the picture or adding a load-spreading arrangement. For very heavy pieces on a hollow wall, we will be honest if the position simply is not suitable.
Do I need to know the weight of the picture?
It helps a lot, even roughly — bathroom scales and a helper give a fair estimate for anything liftable. If you cannot weigh it, the dimensions, the frame material and whether it is glazed let us judge the load. Tell us at booking so we bring the right fixings and allow time for a two-person lift if the picture needs one.
How does pricing work for this job?
You pay a booking fee when booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how much notice you give. We quote the full cost of the work before starting, and you approve it before any drilling. Fixings or frame fittings that are needed are identified and quoted separately as materials.
