Why hinges come loose
Hinges rarely fail on their own; they fail because of what they carry and how they were fitted. A heavy solid-core door swings on three small screws per leaf, and over the years those screws work loose in the frame — first slightly, then noticeably. Once a screw spins without gripping, the hole it sits in is stripped, and simply tightening it does nothing: the screw has nothing left to bite. Cheap or undersized hinges on a heavy door wear faster, and a hinge with worn knuckles develops play you can feel as a clunk every time the door moves. None of this is doom for the door — but each cause needs its own answer.
How we diagnose the real fault
We take the weight off the door and check each hinge systematically. A screw that turns without tightening means a stripped hole; a hinge leaf that rocks against the frame means the mounting is failing; a hinge that clunks or sags at the knuckle means the hinge itself is worn out. We also look at whether the right hinges were fitted in the first place — a lightweight internal hinge on a heavy external door will keep failing no matter how often it's screwed back. Knowing which of these you have decides whether the fix takes minutes or needs parts.
The fixes, matched to the cause
For stripped screw holes, the proper repair is to rebuild the hole so the screw has something to grip — plugging it with a suitably sized timber dowel and glue, then re-driving the screw — or, where appropriate, fitting a longer or thicker-gauge screw that reaches sound wood. For a failing hinge leaf, we refix it firmly and, if the original fixing points are beyond rescue, reposition it soundly. For a worn-out hinge, replacement is the honest answer, matched to the door's weight and use; that's a small cost compared with repeating the same repair every six months. Heavy doors may be better served by a third hinge or a stronger pattern, and we'll advise where that's worth doing.
Handling the door safely
Working on hinges usually means supporting or briefly removing the door, and that's done carefully: doors are heavier than they look, and a dropped door can damage its edge, its hinges or the floor. We bring what's needed to support the door properly while the work is done, and we never leave a door hanging on a single screw "for now". If the door is large or awkward — a heavy external door, or one in a tight hallway — we'll say what the job involves before starting so there are no surprises.
What to prepare and what to expect
Clear a working space around the door so it can be opened fully and supported during the work. If you already have replacement hinges you'd like used, have them to hand and we'll check they suit the door before fitting. Afterward, the door should hang with even gaps and swing without clunking — that's the test we apply before we call it done. If a hinge was replaced, any touch-up to the paintwork around the old screw holes is a decorating decision we'll flag. And if the frame itself is soft or cracked where the hinges sit, we'll tell you, because no screw holds well in rotten wood and that needs addressing first.
Booking
Tell us which door is affected and what it's doing — sagging, scraping, clunking or all three. You pay a booking fee on booking; labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit; and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts. If replacement hinges or fixings are needed, they're identified and quoted separately from the labour. It's a short job in most cases — many hinge repairs fit comfortably into a single visit alongside another small task if you have one.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A door that sags, scrapes the floor, or swings with a clunk is usually shouting about its hinges. It's one of the most common door faults we see, and one of the most fixable — provided the stripped screw holes and worn hinges are dealt with properly rather than just tightened until the next wobble. That's exactly what we do.

Questions people ask about loose door hinges
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can't I just tighten the hinge screws myself?
You can, and it's worth trying first — but if a screw spins without gripping, the hole is stripped and tightening achieves nothing but a temporarily angry screw. The lasting fix is rebuilding the hole or using the right longer fixing, plus checking the hinge itself isn't worn. If the door sags again within weeks of tightening, that's the sign to get it done properly.
What exactly do you inspect on a loose-hinge job?
We check every screw on every hinge, identify which holes are stripped, assess whether the hinge leaf or the knuckle is worn, and compare the hinge type with the weight of the door. That tells us whether the fix is a re-screw, a hole repair or a hinge replacement. We explain the diagnosis and quote the work before starting.
Will the door be taken off its hinges, and is that risky?
Usually the door is supported and sometimes removed briefly to work on the hinges safely — doors are heavier than they look and a dropped door damages itself. We handle that with proper support and care, and we won't leave a door hanging insecurely. For a particularly heavy or awkward door we'll tell you beforehand what the job involves.
Our door keeps sagging no matter how often we tighten it — why?
That pattern almost always means stripped screw holes, a worn hinge, or the wrong hinges for a heavy door. Tightening treats none of those. The lasting answer is rebuilding the fixing holes, replacing the worn hinge, or fitting a stronger or additional hinge suited to the door's weight — which we'd identify and quote before doing anything.
What does the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee on booking and labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit. Once we've looked at the hinges we quote the full cost of the repair and you approve it before we begin. If new hinges or fixings are required, they're identified and quoted separately from the labour.
