Why doors stick
Timber moves with the weather. A door that swings freely in February can bind firmly in August, because humidity swells the wood by a few millimetres in each direction. Layered paint is the other classic culprit — decades of redecoration can add a surprising thickness to the door's edges until it barely fits. And then there's the door that has dropped: loose or worn hinges let one corner sink until it digs into the frame or the floor. Each cause has a different cure, and easing the wrong edge of the door solves nothing, so diagnosis comes first.
How we find the cause
We open and close the door slowly while watching where it binds — the marks and shiny patches on the edge and frame usually tell the story outright. We check the hinges for movement and wear, look at the gaps around the door for evenness, and consider the season: a door that sticks only in damp weather points to swelling, while one that sticks all year points to paint, wear or a permanent shift. If the door has recently been decorated, we ask when, because fresh paint in the wrong place can jam a latch as easily as a swollen edge can.
The work itself
The most common fix is careful easing: taking a minimal amount of wood off the sticking edge with a plane or sanding block, a little at a time, testing between passes until the door runs free with a couple of millimetres to spare. Take too much and you create a rattling gap and a draught, so restraint matters. Where paint is the problem, it's softened and removed from the edge rather than the door being planed needlessly. Where the door has dropped, the cure is at the hinges — tightening, shimming or replacing them — not at the edge. And where the frame rather than the door is the problem, we'll tell you, because planing a good door to suit a bad frame is backwards.
Limits we're honest about
A few situations deserve a flag. If a door is sticking because the frame is rotting or the wall around it has moved, easing the door treats the symptom and the cause remains — we'll explain what we can see and when a specialist assessment makes sense. If the door is a fire door, its edges, gaps and intumescent seals are part of its certification, and we don't plane those without saying what that means. And a badly warped door — twisted rather than merely swollen — can be improved but often not perfected; we'll tell you what's realistic before starting rather than after.
What to prepare and aftercare
Clear the area around the door so it can open fully, and move anything fragile out of the swing. Dust is part of the job when planing or sanding, so sheets down and a tidy-up afterwards come as standard. Afterward, the one thing to watch is the finish: bare wood on a planed or sanded edge should be sealed or painted to stop moisture getting back in — we'll show you exactly where, and doing that promptly is what makes the fix last. If the door starts to bind again in the next damp spell, tell us early; a small correction then beats a full re-fit later.
Booking
Tell us which door, what it does, and whether it's worse in certain weather. You pay a booking fee on booking, labour is charged hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. If hinges, replacement screws or other parts are needed, they're identified and quoted separately from the labour. Same-day may be available if the door is badly jammed and you need it usable today.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A door that screeches along the carpet or needs a fight to open gets worse every week you live with it. Sticking usually comes down to swelling, paint build-up or a door that has dropped — all fixable, but only if the cause is identified rather than guessed. We ease the door properly and leave it moving the way it should.

Questions people ask about door sticking or jammed
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could I ease a sticking door myself?
A light sand of a binding edge is well within DIY reach — the risk is overdoing it. Once too much wood is off, the door rattles, draughts and never quite fits again, and paint layers hide how much is really needed. If the door sticks badly, has dropped, or is a fire door, a professional touch is the safer bet.
What do you check before planing anything?
We watch where the door actually binds, check the hinges for looseness or wear, look at the gaps around the frame, and consider whether the sticking is seasonal. Only when we're confident the door's edge is the true cause do we plane — and sparingly, testing between passes. If the hinges or frame are the real problem, that's what we fix instead.
What if the door is a fire door?
Fire doors rely on specific gaps and intumescent seals to work as rated, so they can't just be planed like an ordinary internal door. We identify fire doors when we see them and explain what adjustment is appropriate and what isn't. If a fire door is badly swollen or damaged, the right answer may be a correctly rated replacement rather than an ease.
Will there be an unpainted patch afterwards, and who deals with it?
Yes — where we plane or sand an edge, the bare wood needs sealing or painting afterwards to keep moisture out, and that's a decorating task unless you've agreed otherwise with us. We'll point out exactly which surfaces need attention and why it matters. Done promptly, that touch-up is what keeps the door stable through the next wet winter.
How is the work priced?
There's a booking fee paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit. We assess the door, explain the fix and quote the full cost before starting, and nothing proceeds until you approve it. Any parts — hinges, screws, fixings — are identified and quoted separately from the labour.
