A trip is a warning, not a diagnosis

Modern fuse boxes usually contain circuit breakers and residual current devices rather than a row of replaceable fuses. These protective devices disconnect power when they detect an overload, short circuit, earth leakage or another unsafe condition. A single trip may follow a temporary overload, but a device that repeatedly trips is signalling a continuing problem. The switch position can help identify the affected circuit, although labels may not be accurate. Do not assume the device itself is faulty simply because it is the part you can see.

What to check without opening the board

Look at the external switch positions and note which one has moved; do not remove the consumer-unit cover. If you know which circuit is affected, unplug portable items on that circuit and switch off relevant appliances before a single reset, provided there is no smell, heat, visible damage or moisture. If it stays on, reconnect items one at a time only if there are no warning signs. If it trips immediately or trips again, leave it off. A fixed appliance should not be disconnected by dismantling wiring.

How the electrician tests the circuit

The engineer confirms the supply and identifies the protective device and the areas it serves. They inspect the board externally and check the circuit, accessories and likely connected loads. Electrical tests can reveal a short, leakage to earth, insulation problem or damaged connection. Where appliances are a possible cause, the electrician can help distinguish an appliance fault from a wiring fault using safe isolation and appropriate testing. The objective is to find why the device operated, not to repeatedly reset it until the symptom disappears.

Repair or replacement depends on evidence

A circuit fault may require repair to wiring or an accessory, while an appliance problem may mean the item must remain unplugged and be assessed separately. A breaker or residual-current device may itself be defective, but replacement is considered only after checks support that conclusion. The electrician explains the finding, repair choices and any limitations before chargeable work starts. Once fixed, the relevant circuit and protective device are checked before power is returned. If another circuit needs to remain isolated, you will be told which rooms or equipment that affects.

Know when to stop using the circuit

If the board smells of burning, feels hot, makes a persistent buzzing sound, or shows scorch marks, keep clear and arrange urgent electrical help. If it is safe to reach the main switch, switch it off; do not touch a damaged board or any exposed conductor. Water around the consumer unit or electrical fittings is also a reason to avoid contact. With no warning signs, leaving the tripped circuit off is safer than forcing it back on. Do not bridge a breaker or fit a larger one to stop trips.

Avoid another trip after the repair

The engineer can explain whether the trigger was a temporary overload, damaged appliance or installation fault. Spread high-demand plug-in equipment across suitable circuits only on advice, and replace damaged leads rather than taping them. If a particular appliance was implicated, do not use it until it has been checked. Keep the fuse-box schedule legible so you can identify circuits during a future fault. A protective switch that operates again should be treated as a new warning, not as something to silence.

Book a fuse-box inspection

If a switch keeps tripping or will not reset, have the circuit checked. Same-day and emergency appointments may be available where the symptoms warrant it. You pay a booking fee at the time of booking and labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how quickly you need us. We quote the full work cost before we begin, and you approve it before tools come out.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A tripped switch in the fuse box is protecting the installation from a fault or overload. If it will not stay on, or trips again when equipment is used, repeated resetting is not the answer. We check the circuit and connected equipment to find why it operated and what needs attention.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about tripped fuse box

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I reset a tripped fuse-box switch?

If the board is cool and dry, there are no warning signs, and you have unplugged portable appliances, a single reset may be reasonable. If it trips again, leave it off and book a check.

What will the electrician do about a tripped fuse box?

They identify which protective device operated, check its circuit and test for overload, wiring or appliance faults. They will not assume the switch itself is faulty without checking what caused it to trip.

Is it unsafe if the fuse box keeps tripping?

A trip is a protective response, but repeated operation signals a problem that needs diagnosis. If the board is hot, noisy, scorched or smells of burning, keep clear and get urgent help.

Can I replace a breaker with a bigger one?

No. A higher rating may leave the wiring unprotected and can create a fire risk. The circuit and its protective device must be assessed together by an electrician.')],

How is the visit and repair charged?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
