What a Good Outdoor Socket Installation Involves
An outdoor socket is more than a socket on a wall. Done properly it means:
- The right socket for the position — a weatherproof (IP-rated) unit, with a lid that closes over the plug so it stays protected even while in use.
- A sensible position — close to where you actually use power (the mower, the pressure washer, the Christmas lights), but sheltered where possible and out of the direct line of driving rain.
- A proper supply route — cable run and clipped correctly, entering the socket from below or through a sound gland so water cannot track down into it.
- Correct protection — the circuit protected by an RCD so that any fault trips the supply rather than shocking anyone, with the right breaker rating for the cable.
- Neat finishing — inside and outside walls made good, cable concealed or neatly contained, and everything labelled at the consumer unit.
Why Not Just Use an Extension Lead?
Trailing leads through windows are the most common outdoor "solution" and the worst one: they leave windows that cannot close or lock, crush the lead, expose plugs to rain, and provide no RCD protection of their own. Plug-in weatherproof converters help a little but still rely on an indoor socket and a door or window propped open. A dedicated outdoor socket closes the window, tidies the wall, and puts the protection where the power actually goes.
How We Plan the Installation
We start with how you will use the socket — mowing, gardening equipment, lighting, a freezer in the garage, hot tub or pond equipment (which have their own demands) — because the load and position drive the design. We survey the route from your consumer unit, discuss where the socket should go and what type suits, and agree the plan and price with you before any work starts. If your consumer unit has no capacity or suitable protection for the new circuit, we will explain what is needed rather than compromising.
How We Install It
The new circuit is run from the consumer unit along the cleanest route, with cable sized for the load and protected throughout. The socket we fit is a quality weatherproof (IP-rated) unit, mounted at a sensible height, sealed to the wall, and glanded so the cable entry sheds water. Connections at the consumer unit are made cleanly, the RCD and breaker are verified, and the whole installation is tested — insulation, earth continuity and RCD operation — before the socket is signed off. We make good the surfaces we pass through and leave the wall as we found it, plus a socket.
Aftercare and Using It Well
An outdoor socket lasts when it is used as designed: close the lid whenever nothing is plugged in, use good-quality leads and plugs, and avoid daisy-chaining extension reels for high-draw equipment. We will show you which breaker and RCD protect the new socket, and label it at the board. After storms, a glance at the lid and seals now and then is all the maintenance it needs.
When to Book the Installation
Any time is fine for a planned installation — no urgency, no fuss. Book sooner if you are planning garden work, a new shed or garage, or equipment that needs a permanent supply, so the socket is ready when you are. If your existing outdoor socket has failed and you would rather replace it than repair it, that works the same way.
Book Your Outdoor Socket Installation Today
We fit outdoor sockets across the West Midlands, with appointments around your week and installation visits that usually finish in a single call-out. Call or book online and tell us roughly where you want the socket and what it will power — we will confirm the best position, agree the price before starting, and leave you with outside power that just works.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Running extension leads through a window or doorway is how most people cope without an outdoor socket — and it is awkward, insecure and not weather-safe. A properly fitted outdoor socket changes that: power where you need it, sealed against the rain, and protected like the rest of your electrics. We site it sensibly, install it neatly, and test it before we leave.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about outdoor socket installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Where is the best place for an outdoor socket?
Close to where you will actually use it, but sheltered from the worst of the weather and away from door thresholds and puddles. Backs of garages and sheltered house walls are ideal. We will walk the options with you and agree a position before starting — you know how you use the garden, and we know what the cable route allows.
Can I fit an outdoor socket myself?
Extending an existing circuit and fitting weatherproof equipment involves consumer unit connections, RCD protection and correct cable sizing — work that needs to be right, not approximately right, because it is exposed to the weather for years. A poorly sealed DIY socket often trips the RCD every time it rains. We fit, seal and test it properly.
Will the socket be safe to use in the rain?
Yes, when it is fitted properly. We use weatherproof (IP-rated) sockets whose lids close over the plug, so the connections stay protected even while equipment is running. Cable enters through proper glands so water cannot track in, and the circuit is RCD-protected so any fault cuts the power rather than shocking anyone.
What does an outdoor socket installation cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
How long does the installation take?
Most single outdoor socket installations are completed in one visit — the time depends mainly on the distance from your consumer unit and how much of the route is concealed. We will give you a realistic timescale when we quote, and the testing at the end is included, not an extra.
