Water and electrical equipment do not mix
Water can enter a consumer unit through leaks, flooding, condensation or water running down a cable. Moisture may create a conductive path, damage insulation and corrode connections; problems can continue after the surface has dried. A unit that looks normal from outside may still contain damp or contaminated components. Do not touch the enclosure or any nearby wet surface, and do not assume that a breaker has made the area safe.
What to do before an electrician arrives
Keep people away from the wet area and do not open the consumer unit. If the main switch is dry, accessible without standing in water and safe to reach, switch off the supply; otherwise do not approach it. Never use a hairdryer, heater or cloth on the unit. If water is actively entering or the property is flooded, address people’s safety first and contact emergency services where needed. Tell us how the water reached the unit and whether power remains on.
Assessment after water exposure
The electrician checks the unit and surrounding area for moisture, deposits, corrosion and heat or tracking damage. They isolate affected circuits and determine whether water has entered the enclosure or travelled along cables. Equipment exposed to water may need replacement rather than drying and reuse, depending on its condition. The extent cannot be judged from the outside alone. We explain the findings, required work and price before chargeable repairs begin.
Drying the room is not the same as clearing the fault
Even when the wall or casing feels dry, moisture can remain inside terminals and devices, and corrosion can worsen over time. Do not turn the supply back on because the area has dried or because lights appear to work. The electrician tests the affected wiring and assesses the equipment before deciding what can remain and what must be replaced. Any circuit that cannot be shown safe stays isolated until further work is complete.
Repair and safe return to power
Depending on exposure, the work may involve replacing the consumer unit or affected devices, repairing damaged cables, and correcting the source of water ingress with the appropriate trade. Electrical repairs are tested before the supply is restored. Follow any instruction to keep circuits off, and arrange the leak or building repair so the same area is not exposed again. If water returns, keep clear and request another assessment before operating the unit.
What the visit involves
Tell us whether there is standing water, active leakage, visible damage and whether anyone has switched the supply off. The electrician assesses the area without assuming a dry outer casing means the inside is safe, then isolates and tests affected circuits. You receive the repair scope and quote before chargeable work. Do not approach an unsafe unit to take photographs or operate a switch.
Aftercare and safety
Keep clear of a wet consumer unit and do not touch switches, covers or nearby wet surfaces. Switch off only if the control is safely reachable from a dry position. Arrange urgent electrical checks before power is restored, even if the area appears to have dried.
Book your electrical visit
Arrange an urgent inspection if water has reached the fuse box. Keep clear until the unit and affected circuits have been assessed, even if the surface has dried.
Further details for your electrician
Water can reach the unit through a route that is not obvious, including along a cable or behind a wall. Mention whether the source was a roof leak, pipe leak, condensation or floodwater, and whether it has been stopped. The electrical inspection addresses the safety of the equipment; the water source may need separate building repair. Both issues matter, since a repaired consumer unit could be exposed again if the leak continues.

Water near a fuse box can create shock, tracking and corrosion risks even if the unit still appears to work. Keep clear, isolate the supply only if it is safe to do so, and arrange an urgent inspection before using the affected circuits.
What our customers say about our electrical service

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about water damaged fuse box
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I dry out the fuse box and turn it back on?
No. Moisture may remain inside and cause corrosion or a conductive path after the outside looks dry. Keep clear and have the unit and affected circuits assessed first.
How will the electrician diagnose the problem?
They inspect for moisture and damage, determine how far water has travelled and test affected circuits. Components exposed to water may need replacement rather than drying.
Is a water-damaged consumer unit an emergency?
It can create a shock or fire risk, particularly if the unit is energised, wet or visibly damaged. Keep away and arrange urgent help; do not stand in water to operate the switch.
Does every water leak mean I need a new consumer unit?
Not always, but water-exposed devices may not be safe to reuse. The electrician assesses the extent of ingress and explains whether replacement or a more limited repair is appropriate.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
