Most appliance faults are inconvenient. A burning smell is different. It means heat is being generated where it should not be — in insulation, in a terminal, in dust on a heating element, or in a component that has failed and is drawing current it was never designed for. The correct response is immediate: stop using it, unplug it if you can do so safely, and do not plug it back in to check whether the smell has gone.

Stop, isolate, and do not test it

Unplug the appliance if the plug is accessible and cool enough to touch. Do not pull the cable. If the plug or socket is hot, scorched or smoking, do not touch it; switch off at the consumer unit if you know which circuit it is, and treat it as an electrical fire risk. If there is smoke, flames or crackling, get out, call 999 and do not re-enter. Once the appliance is isolated, leave it alone. Switching it back on to see whether the smell recurs is the single most common way a small fault becomes a serious one.

What actually causes the smell

There are distinct smells and they point in different directions. A hot plastic or rubber smell usually means a terminal or connector has overheated and is starting to char its insulation, often from a loose connection drawing high current through a small contact area. A fishy, acrid smell is characteristic of failing electrolytic components on a control board. A dusty, scorched smell on a heating appliance often comes from dust or lint burning off an element, which can be harmless once — but only once, and only where there is nothing else wrong. A sharp metallic burning smell suggests a motor or winding overheating. None of these should be diagnosed by nose alone, but the type of smell is a useful starting point.

What we check on the visit

The appliance is inspected only when isolated and cool. We look at the plug and socket for heat damage, the flex at its strain relief, and the internal terminations for discolouration, hardened insulation or carbon tracking. Heating elements are checked for debris and for signs of failure. Motors are checked for overheating and for blocked cooling airways. Control boards are inspected for burnt tracks, swollen capacitors and scorched components. Where dust or lint is the cause, the appliance is cleaned thoroughly and the airflow confirmed to be clear.

Honest answers on repair and safety

Some causes are straightforward: a loose terminal remade, a blocked vent cleared, a lint buildup removed, a failed thermostat replaced. Others are not. A control board that has burned through a track may have damaged components around it, and a motor that has overheated may have compromised its winding insulation. In those cases we will tell you that a repair carries risk and that replacement is the safer choice. We do not offer guarantees about an appliance's future condition, and we will not declare a fire-damaged appliance serviceable.

After the visit

Whatever the finding, keep the appliance out of use until it has been cleared. After a repair, run it for a short period while you are present, check that nothing feels unusually warm and that no smell returns, and stop immediately if either happens. Clear lint and dust from vents and filters regularly — accumulated lint near a heat source is a genuine fire hazard and one of the most preventable causes we see.

What to tell us when booking

Say what the smell was like, when it appeared, whether there was smoke or visible damage, and whether the appliance still functions. Mention any recent spillage, a plug that felt warm, or a fuse that has blown. Do not bring a fire-damaged appliance into use before we have seen it.

Booking

Book online and describe the smell and the appliance. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before any work begins; parts are identified and priced separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A burning smell from an appliance is not a symptom to monitor. It means something inside is overheating, and the difference between a repair and a fire can be a matter of minutes. Stop using the appliance, unplug it if that is safe, and keep it out of use until it has been inspected. Our visit identifies the source and gives you a straight answer on safety.

Questions people ask about burning smell from appliance

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I just air the room and carry on using it?

No. A burning smell means something is overheating, and continuing to use the appliance risks a fire. Unplug it, keep it out of use and have it inspected before it is switched on again.

What is inspected after a burning smell?

The plug, socket and flex for heat damage, internal terminations for scorching or carbon tracking, heating elements for debris, motors for overheating and blocked airways, and the control board for burnt components. The appliance is not powered again until it has been checked and passed.

There was smoke but no flames. Do I still need to worry?

Yes. Smoke indicates combustion of insulation, dust or a component, and the underlying fault is still present. Treat it as a fire risk and do not re-energise the appliance.

The smell only lasted a second and it still works. Should I book?

It is worth having it checked. A single brief smell can be dust burning off, but it can also be the first sign of a failing terminal. Only an inspection can tell the difference.

What will the visit cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We confirm the full cost before work starts and you approve it first; parts are identified and quoted separately.
