A dishwasher contains several litres of hot water under pressure during a cycle, and there are a limited number of places it can escape. Locating the source is most of the work. Guessing at it usually means replacing a door seal when the real fault is a hose clip, or the reverse.

Isolate first, investigate second

If water is on the floor, stop the machine and switch it off at the socket if that is safely reachable. If the socket is not reachable without stepping through water, isolate the kitchen circuit at the consumer unit instead. Do not pull the machine out while it is full of water and still plugged in.

Mop up and check whether the water is clean or soapy. Clean water suggests a supply-side leak; soapy water suggests it is escaping from the tub during a wash. That is a useful division before any tools come out.

The usual sources

  • Door seal. Perished rubber, a split at the corners, or debris trapped in the lip. Water appears at the door edges, usually on the hinge side or the lower corners.
  • Door alignment and hinges. A door that does not sit square presses unevenly on the seal, and the leak appears intermittent.
  • Inlet hose and connection. A perished washer or a loose union weeps steadily, often only under pressure.
  • Drain hose. A split in the corrugated section, or a loose connection at the pump or spigot.
  • Pump housing and seals. The pump seal or the sump gasket fails with age, and water collects under the machine rather than at the front.
  • Tub and door springs. Less common, and usually the result of a crack or a failed seal at the sump union.
  • Overfilling. A fill fault sends excess water past the door, which looks like a seal leak and is not.

How we narrow it

We run the machine briefly with the front panel observed, then check underneath. Damp patterns are informative: water at the front bottom edge points at the door; water at the rear or under the centre points at a hose or the pump housing. We check the base tray for standing water, because that is the machine's own leak detector and it will have caught what escaped internally.

Overfilling is checked by watching the water level during fill. If the level rises above the normal mark, the fill is the fault and the door seal is innocent.

Repair options

Door seals are relatively inexpensive and usually a straightforward replacement, though some models require the door to be split. Hoses and clips are cheap. Pump seals and sump gaskets are more involved and the machine usually has to come out. Tub cracks are the one case where replacement of the machine is often the sensible answer, and we will say so rather than attempting a repair that will not hold.

What we will not claim

We cannot tell you over the phone which seal has failed. We also cannot promise a leak is fixed in one visit if a part needs ordering. And we will not seal a leak with mastic or tape as a workaround; a temporary bodge on a wet appliance is not a repair.

Aftercare

After the repair we run a full cycle with the machine in place and check both the front edge and underneath for damp. Check the floor and the base of the adjacent unit a day later. If the machine has an anti-flood base tray, a leak will have left water there, and we dry and check it so the machine does not refuse to start on that account afterwards.

Booking

Tell us where the water appears, whether it is clean or soapy, and how much. Photographs help. Book online, with the booking fee paid at the time of booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Water on the kitchen floor from a dishwasher needs dealing with promptly, partly because of the floor and the units, and partly because water and electrics in the same appliance do not mix. The useful question is not whether it leaks but where from, because the answer ranges from a two-minute fix to a pump housing job.

Questions people ask about dishwasher leaking water

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Should I switch it off at the fuse box?

If the socket is not safely reachable because of the water, yes, isolate the kitchen circuit at the consumer unit. If you can reach the socket safely, switching off there is enough. Either way, do not pull the machine out while it is full.

How do you locate the leak?

We run the machine briefly and observe the front, then check underneath for damp patterns, and inspect the base tray. Clean water points to supply, soapy water to the tub, and the position of the damp narrows it further.

Can a leak just be the door seal?

Often, yes, but an overfill looks identical from the outside. We check the water level during fill as well as the seal, so we do not replace a seal that was never the problem.

Will you seal it with sealant as a quick fix?

No. Sealant and tape are not a repair on a pressurised wet appliance and tend to fail at the worst moment. We replace the failed component or tell you the machine is beyond economic repair.

What does the visit cost?

The booking fee is taken when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any seals, hoses or gaskets are identified and quoted separately.
