When the screen on a video intercom shows nothing, the fault sits in one of four places: the display itself, the camera at the entrance panel, the wiring carrying the video signal, or the power feeding the system. Audio may still work perfectly, which is itself a diagnostic clue — it tells us the system has power and the speech path is intact, narrowing the problem towards the video elements.

Why screens go blank

Failed display panels are common on older monitors, where the backlight or the screen electronics simply reach the end of their life. A failed camera module at the entrance panel produces the same symptom from the other end. Video signal wiring can be damaged or corroded, particularly at the entrance panel where weather attacks connections. Power problems can selectively affect the video circuitry, and on systems where the monitor has its own plug-in supply, a failed adapter is a frequent and inexpensive cause. On some systems a simple settings change — a monitor put into standby, or a screen brightness turned right down — presents as a dead screen, which is why we always check configuration before condemning hardware.

How we work through it

We start by confirming the pattern: does audio work? Does the screen light at all, even briefly? Is the fault on all monitors in the property or just one? From there we test the monitor's power supply, check its settings and connections, test the camera at the panel, and measure the video signal path between the two. On multi-flat systems, whether other residents retain video tells us whether the fault is in your equipment or shared plant. This structured approach means we quote a display replacement when it is a display, and a camera when it is a camera — not a guess.

Repairs and what they involve

Typical repairs are a replacement monitor or display module, a new camera unit in the entrance panel, re-terminating video connections, or replacing a failed power adapter. Where the monitor is obsolete and unavailable, we will explain the options honestly, including replacing the monitor with a compatible modern unit. Parts are quoted separately and the full cost is approved before we start. In shared buildings, work on the entrance panel or riser cabling normally needs landlord or managing agent permission, and we will not work on communal systems without it. We never force entry doors or bypass security to reach panels — access is arranged with whoever manages the building.

What you can check yourself

Confirm the monitor is switched on and not in standby, and check any brightness or contrast settings — this is genuinely common. If the monitor plugs into a socket, check that socket works with another device. Beyond that, opening the monitor or panel is not advisable: video connections are easily damaged and mains voltage may be present near the monitor supply.

Honest limits

We diagnose before quoting, so we cannot promise a repair cost, duration or outcome until we have tested the system. Where a fault is intermittent, we may ask you to note when it occurs, as patterns help. If the system is managed by a landlord or agent, some repairs may need to go through them.

When to book

Call when the screen is completely dark, when it flickers or shows a distorted image before failing, or when video has failed on one monitor only. Mention the system make and model if known, whether audio still works, and how long the fault has been developing.

A dark video screen removes the reassurance you paid for. Get in touch and we will find where the picture is being lost and quote a repair you can approve with confidence.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A video intercom with a dead screen leaves you opening the door blind, which is exactly what the camera was there to prevent. Whether the image is missing entirely or the screen shows nothing while audio still works, each pattern points somewhere different. We test the display path, camera and power systematically, then quote the specific repair before any work begins.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about no video on intercom screen

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Should I try anything before booking a dead intercom screen?

Check the monitor is not in standby, that brightness settings have not been turned down, and that its power socket works with another device. Those are safe. Do not open the monitor or entrance panel — that is engineer territory, and mains voltage may be nearby.

What do you check when the video feed is missing?

We confirm whether audio still works, test the monitor's power supply and settings, check the camera at the entrance panel, and measure the video wiring between them. Once we know where the picture is lost we quote the repair before starting, with parts listed separately.

Is a blank intercom screen a safety concern?

Generally no, but stop using the monitor and call us if it smells of burning, gets unusually hot or trips anything electrical. The main issue is security: you cannot see who is at the door, so be cautious about admitting visitors until it is fixed.

Can the camera be replaced without replacing the whole system?

Often yes, depending on the make and model — many panel cameras are replaceable units. We will confirm what is available for your system during diagnosis and quote the options, including a compatible modern replacement if your model is discontinued.

What does a video intercom repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and hourly labour is charged at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
