Intermittent video loss is the fault that tempts people to do nothing. The picture comes back on its own, the system seems fine, and yet every so often a camera freezes, pixels break up, or the view goes black for minutes at a time. Treat it as an early warning: intermittent dropouts are how failing cables, connections and power supplies announce themselves, and the end of that road is a camera that does not come back at all.
What causes a picture to come and go
The most common causes are physical and get steadily worse. A cable that has been nicked, crushed or weather-damaged can hold a signal until anything moves it — wind on the cable run, a door closing, temperature changes in a loft. Connectors work loose or corrode, particularly outdoors where moisture gets into junction boxes. Power supplies fail gradually: a camera may run normally until the supply warms up, then drop out, recover when it cools, and repeat. On network systems, a failing switch port, a marginal Ethernet link or a network that reconfigures itself can produce the same symptom. Less often, the camera or recorder itself is becoming unstable, especially after firmware updates or years of heat in a loft.
How we reproduce and diagnose it
Because the fault is intermittent, diagnosis means making it happen. Our engineer will watch each camera's feed over time, move and flex cable runs, load the system and check the recorder's event logs, which often record exactly when and how a camera dropped — a power event, a link loss, or a signal quality problem. We test cable integrity with proper testers, check power supplies under load, and inspect outdoor connections for moisture and corrosion. Where the logs point to a network cause, we check switches, link speeds and addressing. The aim is to name the component that is failing, not just to reboot everything and hope.
Repairs that last
The fix depends on what we find. Damaged cable runs are repaired or re-routed with proper outdoor-rated cable and sealed connections; corroded or loose connectors are replaced rather than taped over; failing power supplies are replaced with the correct specification, quoted as a part before fitting. Network faults are corrected at the switch or configuration level. If a camera itself is failing, we will say so and quote replacement separately — propping up a dying camera with periodic reboots is not a repair we will sell you. We quote the full cost before starting and we do not guarantee against future faults, but we do aim to remove the actual cause rather than the symptom.
Responsible camera use while we are there
While we work on your system it is a good moment to check where cameras are actually pointing. Recordings are personal data and the owner is responsible for using them lawfully and considerately: cameras should cover your own property, avoid unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, and footage should be kept for a sensible period and shared only appropriately — for example with the police if they ask. We fit and configure equipment and will flag placements that reach beyond your boundary, but we do not provide legal advice.
Aftercare
After the repair we will confirm every camera holds a stable picture, including checking logs for any repeat dropout events. If you ever see the symptom again, note the time and which camera — pattern information makes any follow-up much faster. Keep an eye out after storms or building work, which are the usual triggers for new cable damage.
When to call us
Book a visit when the dropouts start rather than waiting for a permanent failure, and tell us which cameras are affected, how often it happens and whether weather or time of day seems to matter. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts — parts are quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A camera that works most of the time but drops out now and then is maddening, because it never fails when you are watching. Intermittent faults are usually physical — a connection, a cable or a power supply deteriorating slowly — and they almost always get worse. Our engineer reproduces the dropout, finds its source and fixes it properly rather than leaving you with a system that only behaves when someone is looking.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about intermittent video loss
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I just replace the camera that keeps dropping out?
Not yet — in our experience intermittent dropouts are more often the cable, a connector or the power supply than the camera itself. Replacing the camera without diagnosing the cause usually means the fault simply continues. Diagnosis first will tell you whether the camera is actually the problem.
How do you diagnose a fault that comes and goes?
We use the recorder's own event logs, which record when and how each camera dropped, then test the cable runs with proper testers, check power supplies under load and inspect outdoor connections for moisture. We try to reproduce the fault and name the failing component rather than just rebooting the system.
Is any part of this a safety issue?
The mains-powered parts of a CCTV system — power supplies, adapters and any fixed wiring — are engineer work, and we do not recommend opening power units or working at height on camera runs yourself. Loose cabling and overloaded adapters are worth flagging to us rather than investigating yourself.
Will the fix involve running new cable through my house?
Only if the existing cable run is damaged beyond repair, and we will tell you before quoting. Where re-routing is needed we plan the route with you, use outdoor-rated cable and seal connections properly, and quote the work as a defined job so you know the full cost before approving it.
What will the visit cost me?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
