When a single camera starts behaving oddly — dropping out, rebooting, losing night vision, showing interference — the temptation is to blame the camera. Very often the real culprit is its power supply or adapter, which has aged to the point where it can no longer deliver stable power under the camera's real demands. Power supply faults are among the most common CCTV problems we see, and among the most misdiagnosed, because a failing supply does not usually fail loudly.

Why power supplies cause such odd symptoms

A power adapter can deteriorate in ways that produce strange behaviour rather than clean failure. Under load — particularly at night when infrared LEDs switch on and demand spikes — a weak supply sags, and the camera brownouts, reboots or loses functions while the supply still measures roughly the right voltage on a basic meter. Heat makes it worse: supplies in lofts and sealed boxes age faster, and a supply that works in the morning may falter in the afternoon heat. Symptoms include cameras that work by day but not at night, intermittent dropouts that come and go, picture interference or rolling, cameras that vanish from the recorder and reappear after a reboot, and whole groups of cameras failing together when they share a supply. A surge or power cut can also damage supplies in ways that leave them working but unreliable.

How we test properly

The difference between guessing and diagnosing is testing under load. Our engineer measures the supply's output while the camera is actually running, including in night mode where the demand is highest, because a supply that holds up unloaded can still collapse under real conditions. We check that the supply's specification matches what the equipment actually needs — wrong-rated or generic replacement adapters are a common source of chronic problems — and we inspect the connections and cabling between supply and camera, since a corroded joint mimics a weak supply almost perfectly. Where cameras share a supply, we test whether the total demand exceeds what it is being asked to deliver. If the recorder's own power supply is suspect, we test that path too.

Replacing supplies properly

Where a supply has failed or is marginal, we replace it with a correctly specified unit for the equipment it serves, quoted as a part before fitting — not the nearest generic adapter to hand. We tidy the installation at the same time: supplies sitting in lofts and outdoor boxes fail faster when they are overheating, damp or buried, so positioning and ventilation are part of doing the job properly. If a surge has taken out several supplies at once, we will identify all the casualties rather than just the noisiest one, and quote any additional replacements separately so you can approve them. We do not promise that a new supply fixes everything before diagnosis — but when diagnosis does point at the supply, the fix is usually quick and definitive.

Power done right, footage used right

A reliable supply is the foundation of everything else the system does. What it records remains personal data, and the owner is responsible for handling it lawfully and considerately: cameras should cover your own property rather than unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, footage should be kept for a sensible period, and clips shared only appropriately — for example with the police if they request them. We configure the equipment; legal questions are not something we advise on.

Aftercare

After replacement, keep an eye on the affected camera across a few full day-night cycles, since supply faults show worst under the evening load of infrared. Note that adapters fitted at the same time tend to age together, so if one has died of age, mention that when you call — checking its siblings during the same visit is often sensible.

When to call us

Book when the odd behaviour starts, and tell us which cameras are affected, whether it is worse at night, and whether anything preceded it such as a storm or power cut. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Failing power supplies are the great imitators of CCTV faults — they cause dropouts, night vision failure, random reboots and cameras that behave strangely, all while looking like camera problems. Because supplies often read fine on a simple test, they need proper diagnosis. Our engineer tests them under load and replaces the ones that are quietly failing.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about faulty cctv power supply

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I just swap the adapter for another one I have?

We would advise against it. Adapters differ in voltage, current rating and connector type, and a mismatched supply can cause chronic instability or damage the camera. A generic adapter that lights the camera up does not mean it is powering it correctly, which is exactly why these faults get misdiagnosed.

How do you know it is the power supply and not the camera?

We test the supply's output under real load, including night mode when infrared demand peaks, check that its specification matches the camera's requirements, and inspect the connections and cabling between them. Where possible we also prove it by testing the camera on a known-good supply before condemning either.

Is there any safety concern with CCTV power supplies?

Yes — supplies and adapters are mains-powered equipment, and opening them, overloading them or using mismatched units is genuinely hazardous as well as unreliable. Power supply work is engineer work, and we would rather you told us about any buzzing, overheating or scorch marks than investigated them yourself.

Why do several of my cameras fail at the same time?

Shared power supplies are common — one unit feeding several cameras — and when it weakens, all of them struggle together. It can also point to a tripped circuit or a damaged connection feeding a group. Testing the supply against the combined demand will tell us which situation you have.

What will the visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
