When a camera starts behaving oddly — dropping offline, showing a strange tint, flickering, or refusing to wake at all — the natural assumption is that the camera has died. Sometimes it has. But a surprising number of "faulty camera" calls turn out to be a failing power adapter, a damaged cable, a corroded connector or a configuration problem, all of which look identical from the sofa. Proper diagnosis matters, because replacing a healthy camera fixes nothing and replacing an unknown part wastes money.
How camera faults show up
Common symptoms include a picture that freezes or drops out, image quality that has visibly degraded, colours that have gone wrong, a camera that works by day but not at night, or one that has vanished from the recorder entirely. Cameras also fail in ways that are gradual rather than sudden: a lens that has fogged internally, an infrared illuminator that has dimmed with age, or a housing seal that has let in moisture and is slowly corroding the electronics. Exposure to weather, Loft heat and power surges all shorten camera life, and a camera that has survived one storm is not guaranteed to survive the next.
How we diagnose properly
Our engineer isolates the fault by testing the system around the camera, not just the camera itself. We check the power supply under load, test the cable run with proper equipment, and if possible swap in a known-good camera or feed to see whether the fault follows the camera or stays with the position. On network systems we check addressing, switch ports and link quality; on recorder systems we check the channel and connections at both ends. We also look at the camera's own settings, because a misconfigured exposure, image mode or schedule can mimic a hardware fault. Only when the camera itself is proven faulty do we recommend replacement.
Repairs and replacements
Fixable causes — power supplies, connectors, cabling, settings and housings — are repaired during the visit wherever possible, with any parts quoted separately before fitting. If the camera is genuinely failed, we will recommend a replacement matched to the position it serves: outdoor rating, night performance and field of view all matter, and a camera that was marginal when installed may be worth upgrading rather than like-for-like swapping. We quote replacement work clearly and do not promise a repair outcome before diagnosis. Where a replacement needs new cabling or access work, that is quoted as part of the job rather than discovered afterwards.
Privacy and considerate camera use
Whenever a camera is repositioned or replaced, it is worth checking what it actually covers. Recordings are personal data and the system's owner is responsible for using them lawfully and considerately — cameras should cover your own property, avoid unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes, gardens or public space, and footage should be retained for a sensible period and shared only appropriately, for example with the police if they request it. We fit and configure equipment and will flag anything that reaches beyond your boundary, though we do not provide legal advice.
Aftercare
After the fix, keep an eye on that camera's picture in the first week, especially across a day-night cycle, since some faults only show at certain times. Note that power surges and storms are the commonest cause of repeat camera and power supply failures, so if one camera has died from a surge, its neighbours may not be far behind — worth mentioning when you call.
When to call us
Book when the symptoms start, and tell us the camera's make and model if you can, what it is doing, and whether anything changed beforehand such as a storm or power cut. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
One misbehaving camera can undo the confidence an entire system gives you, leaving a gap over exactly the area you fitted it to watch. Camera faults can be genuine device failures, but just as often they are power, connection or cabling problems wearing the camera's clothes. Our engineer tests each possibility properly before recommending any replacement.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about faulty cctv camera
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I test whether a camera is really faulty myself?
The safe checks are external: whether the camera's power indicator is lit, whether the connections are seated, and what the recorder reports for that channel. Swapping cameras between positions or opening housings involves working at height and handling wiring, which is engineer work, and swapping without testing can mislead the diagnosis.
What do you check before declaring a camera dead?
We test the power supply under load, the cable run with proper testers, the connections at both ends, and the camera's settings. Where possible we prove it by testing a known-good camera or feed in the same position, so the fault demonstrably follows the camera rather than the cabling.
Is there any risk in leaving a faulty camera unrepaired?
Beyond the obvious blind spot, a camera that has failed after a power surge or storm can indicate damage elsewhere in the system, and a moisture-filled housing can gradually affect adjacent cabling. We will advise whether the rest of the system needs checking rather than just closing the one gap.
Can you upgrade the camera rather than replace it like for like?
Yes, and often it is worth considering — night performance, resolution and field of view have improved, and a like-for-like swap may preserve an old limitation. We will discuss the options and quote any upgrade clearly before you approve it, including the cost of whatever cabling or bracket changes are needed.
How is the cost of the visit worked out?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
