A leaky shed roof is one of those jobs that starts small and gets expensive. Water tracks along rafters, soaks the felt or panels and drips onto the contents below, so by the time you notice, the covering may have been failing for months. The good news is that most shed roof problems are straightforward to diagnose and repair once you know what you're dealing with.

Why shed roofs leak

Shed roofs are usually covered with mineral felt, bitumen sheet, shingles or corrugated panels, and each fails in its own way. Felt dries out, cracks and lifts at the edges as it ages; fixings work loose; corrugated sheets corrode or shift at the laps. Where the roof meets the walls, or where the shed is exposed to wind-driven rain, joints and trims take the worst of the weather. Poor falls and sagging boards can also let water pond in one spot, which finds any weakness. Occasionally what looks like a roof leak is actually water running off a wall or entering through a gap at the eaves, which is exactly why diagnosis comes first.

What we assess on the visit

We look at the roof covering inside and out, checking seams, laps, trims, fixings and the condition of the decking underneath. We inspect the fascias and the joint between roof and walls, and we look for interior signs — staining, damp timber and mould — that tell us where water has been travelling. Safe access matters: we use appropriate ladders or platforms, and we will not walk a fragile or badly damaged roof. If a shed roof is too fragile to stand on safely, we work from access equipment or tell you plainly that a roofing specialist or scaffolding is the right route.

Repair options

Small defects — a lifted seam, a failed lap, a few corroded fixings — can often be repaired on the same visit. Wider areas of worn or cracked covering usually call for re-covering that section or the whole roof, which we'll quote before starting. Where the structure underneath is wet, sagging or soft, the honest answer may be that repairs to the covering alone won't hold until the boards or rafters are dealt with, and we'll say so rather than sell you a patch. In very poor weather we can fit temporary sheeting as an interim measure while a permanent repair is quoted, which keeps the contents dry in the meantime.

Safety and limits

Roof work is weather-dependent: wet, windy or icy conditions make it unsafe, and we'll reschedule rather than take risks. If your shed is an older building with an unknown roofing material, we won't disturb anything that could contain asbestos — we recommend testing and specialist removal first. We can't promise a repair before we've diagnosed the fault, and we don't guarantee that a repaired roof will never weather again, but a properly assessed and quoted repair is the best defence for the contents below.

Booking your visit

If the leak is active, move valuables away from the drip, put a bucket underneath and don't touch any lighting or sockets that have got wet. To book, contact us by phone or through the website, tell us the shed's size and approximate age, describe where the water appears and how long it's been happening, and mention anything stored inside that's particularly at risk. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

A leaking shed roof rarely fixes itself, and every shower quietly damages the tools, furniture and boxes stored underneath. Our visit is about finding out exactly why water is getting in — not just patching the wettest patch. We'll assess the roof, explain your options honestly and give you a quote you can approve before anything is disturbed.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about leaking shed roof

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix a leaking shed roof myself?

Small repairs such as resealing a lifted edge of felt with a compatible sealant can be a sensible DIY job if you're comfortable and safe on a ladder. Anything involving large areas of covering, damaged decking or working on a fragile roof is better left to us — patches applied to the wrong spot often trap water and make things worse.

What do you check during a leak assessment?

We examine the covering inside and out, the laps, trims, fixings and the boards underneath, and look at interior staining to trace where water is travelling. We then explain what we've found, what the repair options are and what each would involve before quoting.

Is it safe for you to walk on my shed roof?

We only walk on roofs that are sound enough to take the weight, using suitable access equipment where needed. If a roof is fragile, badly rotted or unsafe, we won't risk it — we'll either work from safe access or advise that scaffolding or a roofing specialist is required.

How long will the repair take?

We won't guess until we've seen the roof, because the time depends on whether it's a localised defect or a full re-cover, and on the weather on the day. After assessment we'll tell you what the job involves and quote the full cost for your approval before starting.

How much does a shed roof repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately, so there are no surprises once we're on site.
