A sticking gate is one of those problems that people live with for months, lifting and shoving every single day, before finally calling someone. The cause is almost always specific and fixable, and the sooner it is found, the less gets damaged along the way.

Why Gates Stick or Jam

Timber gates swell. A gate that moved freely in a dry summer can bind tightly after weeks of rain, especially where the timber has no protective treatment and drinks water through the end grain. Hinges are the next most common cause: worn or loose hinges let the gate drop so it scrapes on the ground or catches on the post, and rusted hinge pins add their own friction. Posts that have moved change the geometry of the whole opening — the gate was fitted square, but the gap is no longer square, so it binds. And sometimes the obstruction is simpler still: ground heave lifting the paving under the swing, or a path that has been relaid slightly proud.

How We Assess It

We watch the gate swing through its arc and see exactly where it catches, then work back to why. That means checking the hinges and their screws, testing the posts for movement, measuring whether the opening is still square, and looking at the ground and the gate's bottom edge. The distinction matters: planing timber off a gate that has actually dropped on its hinges just makes a gap that reappears every winter. We explain what we have found in plain terms, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts, with parts quoted separately.

Freeing and Fixing

Freeing a jammed gate is done carefully — forcing a gate that is under tension from a twisted hinge can break the frame or tear fixings out of the post. Once free, the real fix depends on the cause: re-seating or replacing worn hinges, replacing screws that have lost grip, easing swollen timber properly and treating it so it does not drink rain again, re-aligning the latch, or squaring up a racked frame by renewing the diagonal brace. If a post has moved enough to change the opening, we will discuss re-setting it honestly — that means digging, and boundary lines often carry buried pipes and cables. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below, so we ask for your utilities' plans as part of a safe dig approach, and providing them is the customer's responsibility.

When Not to Force It

If a gate has gone from sticking to completely seized, stop using force. A seized gate usually means something structural has moved or failed, and leaning on it converts a straightforward repair into a replacement. Call us instead.

Aftercare

Treated timber swells far less than bare timber, so an annual treatment is the best prevention. Keep hinge fixings tight after wet winters and oil the latch occasionally. If the gate scrapes only in wet weather, note when it happens — that pattern is genuinely useful diagnostic information.

When to Call Us

Call when the gate needs lifting or shoving to move, when it scrapes or catches partway through its swing, or when it has seized entirely. When booking, tell us whether the gate is timber or metal, whether the problem is worse in wet weather, and whether the post or the ground under the gate has visibly changed.

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and parts are quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A gate that jams halfway through its swing is frustrating and, if it is your main access, a genuine inconvenience. Our visit covers freeing the gate safely, diagnosing why it sticks, and putting right the cause rather than just planing away timber until it moves again.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about gate sticking or jammed

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I free a sticking gate myself?

Light easing of swollen timber and tightening hinge screws are reasonable DIY. What we would advise against is force — a jammed gate under tension from a moved post or failed hinge can break when leaned on. Also avoid planing timber off aggressively until you know whether the real cause is drop, twist or swelling, or you can end up with a gap that never closes.

What do you look at to diagnose a jammed gate?

Where in the swing it catches, the condition of the hinges and their fixings, post movement, whether the opening is still square, and the ground the gate swings over. We diagnose the cause before easing anything, because the fix for a swollen gate is different from the fix for a dropped one.

Is a jammed gate ever a safety problem?

It can be. A gate hanging on one failed hinge, or one that has dropped enough to be under tension, can break free or fall when forced. If your only route in or out is through that gate, or children use it regularly, get it assessed rather than wrestling with it.

My gate only sticks in wet weather — does that change things?

It is a useful clue, and usually points to swelling timber or soft ground rather than worn hardware. Swollen timber can be eased and treated so it takes on less water; soft ground under a post may need the post re-firmed. We will confirm which it is when we assess, and both are fixable.

How much does it cost to fix a sticking gate?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts such as hinges, fixings or a new latch are quoted separately. Nothing proceeds until you have approved the price.
