New exterior rendering is a significant project — it transforms the appearance of your home and gives the walls a fresh protective skin, but the result is only as good as the preparation, specification and timing that go into it. This is why our first visit is a survey and a conversation, not a promise of a price over the phone. Here is how the process works and what to expect.
Why choose a full render
A full re-render makes sense when existing render has failed widely, when different patches and repairs have left a patchwork of colours and textures, or when the current finish is simply at the end of its useful life. It also lets you change the look of your home: from a dated roughcast to a clean smooth finish, from cement to a breathable lime render on an older solid-walled property, or to a coloured system that removes the need for painting. Each option has trade-offs in appearance, cost, breathability and maintenance, and our job on the survey is to explain those plainly so you can choose with the facts.
What the survey covers
We assess every elevation, sounding the existing render for hollow or blown areas and checking the wall behind for damp, salt contamination and soundness. We identify the background — brick, block, old stone or an existing render — because the new system has to bond to it. We check around windows and doors, sills, eaves, vents and service penetrations where detail work determines whether the finished wall sheds water properly. We also inspect gutters, downpipes, ground levels and flashings for anything that needs correcting before new render goes on.
Then we talk through the finish: smooth, scraped, textured, coloured or painted; the colour range; and whether the building's age and construction call for a breathable system. We confirm the working area, access requirements and any furniture or planting that needs protection, and agree a scope that is properly defined.
How the work proceeds
Before a single new trowel of render goes on, the existing failed material is stripped back to a sound substrate and any damp or cause repaired. The wall is prepared — cleaning, raking out joints, applying a bonding coat or mesh where specified, and fixing beads and stop ends at openings, corners and edges. Render goes on in layers to the system specification, with each coat allowed its proper curing time before the next.
We agree a defined working day for the project and explain the staging. The estimate for the initial visit covers 480 minutes — eight working hours on site — on the scope we agree; rendering projects are quoted as projects, with the working time and stages set out in the quote. Multi-day work is staged logically, elevation by elevation, and you know which walls are complete each day before we leave. You do not pay for a surprise extra day without discussion and approval.
Weather, disruption and limits
Render needs suitable conditions: dry walls, moderate temperatures, and frost-free curing. We schedule sensibly around the forecast and will tell you plainly if weather must delay a day — pushing on in frost or driving rain is how good render jobs fail early. Windows and doors remain usable, but they are masked and protected during the work; expect scaffolding or tower access where the height or layout requires it, and we never improvise unsafe access. Some buildings need planning permission or listed-building consent for changes to the exterior; checking and obtaining any permissions is your responsibility, and we do not promise compliance status.
A new render protects the wall, but no render is maintenance-free and no honest tradesperson can guarantee it will never crack. It will need occasional washing, inspection and early crack repairs, and coloured systems may weather unevenly over time.
Aftercare
Keep gutters and downpipes clear and sound so water never runs down the new surface. Inspect it each spring for fine cracks, clean gently rather than with a pressure washer, and tell us promptly if a patch sounds hollow or discolours — early attention is straightforward; late attention isn't.
Booking your survey
Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full project cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with materials quoted separately. Tell us your house type, approximate wall area, current render condition and preferred finish, and send photos if you can.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A new render changes the look and weather protection of your whole home, so it deserves more than a quick estimate from the pavement. We survey the walls, talk through finishes and preparation, and give you a clear written quote for the agreed scope — including how many days the work will take and when the weather needs to cooperate.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about wall rendering service
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I render the outside of my house myself?
Small repairs on ground-level areas are within reach of a competent DIYer, but a full house is a skilled, multi-day job where poor preparation leaves hollow patches and early failure. The material choice matters too — hard cement render on an old solid wall can trap damp. For a whole-house project, a proper survey and specification pays for itself in avoiding those mistakes.
What does your rendering survey include?
We assess every elevation, sound the existing render, check the wall behind where needed, and inspect the details around windows, doors, sills, eaves and service entries. We identify the substrate and suitable render systems, talk through finish and colour options, and confirm access and protection needs. You receive a defined scope and written quote before deciding.
Will you handle scaffolding and permissions?
We assess what access the work needs and include the access plan in the quote; where scaffolding is required, we arrange it as part of the project. You are responsible for checking and obtaining any planning or listed-building permissions that apply to the property, and we do not promise a particular compliance status. We can describe the proposed finish clearly to help with your application.
How long does a full rendering project take?
It depends on the area, the existing render and the system specified; most whole-house projects are staged over several working days so each coat can cure properly. The estimate for the initial visit covers 480 minutes — eight working hours — on the agreed scope, and the project quote sets out each further stage and day. Weather delays are explained as soon as conditions make them necessary.
How much does a full house rendering project cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full project cost is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. Rendering is priced after a survey of the walls, access and finish you want, so the quote reflects the real scope rather than a guess from a photograph.
