When something comes off the wall, the second fixing is the one that matters

A fixture that has already been on the wall once usually comes off with a story: decorating, new flooring, a move around, or a repair that never got finished. What people do not always expect is that the wall has changed in the meantime. Old holes wear open, filler sits where plugs used to be, and a fresh coat of paint can hide a soft patch behind it. Reinstallation is not simply screwing the item back where it was — it is a fresh look at the fixing point, because that is what decides whether the item stays up.

What we look at before anything goes back up

We start with the wall itself. Solid brick or block, a stud partition with plasterboard, tile over plaster, or an older property with soft, aged plaster — each takes a different fixing, and we confirm what we are dealing with before we drill. We then look at the item: how heavy it is, what its brackets or keyholes expect, and whether the original screws and plugs are still with it. Finally we check the old fixing positions. If a hole is sound we can often reuse it with the right plug. If it is enlarged, cracked or packed with old filler, we move to a fresh position and fill the old one, which keeps the finish tidy and gives the item a proper grip.

Before drilling anywhere we think about what might sit behind the wall — pipes and cables tend to run in predictable places, and we combine detection with common sense such as socket positions, boiler runs and any pipework you know about. Detection helps us make sensible decisions, but no method can promise the absence of hidden services, so we drill carefully rather than blindly.

How the work usually goes

Once we know the wall and the item, we set the position — level, correctly spaced and at the height you want — then drill to suit the fixing we have chosen. In masonry that typically means the right size plug for the right size screw. In plasterboard it may mean a toggle that spreads the load across the board, or locating the studwork so the screws bite into timber. Heavy items such as large mirrors or wide brackets may need a second pair of hands to lift safely; if that applies to yours, please mention it when booking so we can plan for it.

If the item's own fixings have gone missing, we can identify and supply suitable replacements — hardware is quoted separately from the labour, and we will tell you the cost before anything is fitted.

Where we stop and tell you straight

Reinstallation works when the wall can take a fixing. If we find soft, crumbling plaster or a badly damaged area where the item needs to sit, we will show you what we can see, explain the options and quote for any repair before carrying on — we do not pack a failing hole with filler and call it fixed. Paint touch-up or full decoration after filling is not included unless you have asked for it and we have agreed it. And if there is genuinely no safe way to fix the item where you want it, we will say so and suggest an alternative position rather than leave you with something that is going to come down again.

What to have ready, and afterwards

Have the item itself out and accessible, with its brackets, screws and instructions if you still have them — a manufacturer's template takes the guesswork out of spacing. Clear the wall and floor area so there is room to work and nothing to damage. Afterwards, load the item sensibly: let shelves take weight gradually, and glance at the fixings on anything heavy after a week or two. Fresh holes in masonry can shed a little dust for a day even after we have cleaned up.

Booking your reinstallation

A reinstallation visit is booked as a standard handyman call-out: you pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. Before any work starts we agree the full cost with you and you approve it, so there are no surprises. Same-day slots may be available if the fixture needs to go back up quickly. Tell us roughly what the item is, which wall it is going on and whether you still have the original fixings — that is enough for us to turn up prepared.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about wall fixture reinstallation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can't I just refit it in the old holes myself?

Sometimes, if the holes are still sound and you have the right plugs and screws. But old holes are often worn open or full of filler, and a fixture that has already come down once tends to come down again. If the plug spins or pulls when you tighten it, stop and book us in rather than forcing it.

What do you actually check before re-fixing?

The wall construction, the condition of the old holes, the weight of the item and the fixing its brackets need. We also plan every drill position around likely pipe and cable routes before the drill goes near the wall.

What if the wall is damaged where the fixture needs to go?

Then the fixing point needs repair before it can take the load again. We will show you what we can see, explain what the repair involves and quote for it, and only refit once the wall is sound. We never pad out a failing hole and hope for the best.

I've lost the original screws — is that a problem?

No. If you still have the item's instructions, have them out ready, but we can measure the bracket and match suitable screws and plugs either way. Any hardware we supply is identified and quoted separately from the labour.

How does the pricing work for a visit like this?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit. Before we start we agree the full cost with you, and you approve it before any work begins.
