What trunking is and when it suits

Trunking is a slim channel — usually PVC — that is fixed to the wall surface, holds the cables inside, and closes with a lid. Unlike conduit bent around corners or cables clipped straight to the wall, trunking gives you a tidy, straight route with a removable lid, so the leads stay reachable for the day you swap a device or add another cable. It suits TV walls, desk runs, doorbells, aerial drops and anything else where cables would otherwise dangle. It is non-invasive by nature: nothing is buried in the wall, nothing electrical is altered, and the route can be changed or removed later with nothing worse than a few fixing holes to fill.

Choosing the right trunking

Profiles matter more than people expect. A run carrying a TV's power lead and two HDMIs needs a bigger channel than one carrying a single doorbell cable, and an overstuffed trunking refuses to close or bulges along the lid. Colour and finish matter too: white is standard, but paintable trunking lets the run disappear into the wall colour, and some profiles are designed to sit tight into internal corners. You can supply the trunking yourself or we can identify and quote what the route needs as a separate material cost — either way, we will be straight about the profile and length the job actually requires rather than guessing from a photo.

Fitting it properly

The difference between good and bad trunking is in the prep. We plan the route first: where the cables start and finish, where corners and drops happen, and where the run can sit so it reads as an intentional line rather than an afterthought. Then we measure twice and cut once, because mitred corners and square ends are what make trunking look fitted rather than stuck on. Fixings follow the substrate — the right anchors for the wall, placed at sensible centres so the channel does not ripple between screws — and where the wall surface allows, high-bond fixing can avoid drilling altogether. Cables are laid in loosely rather than jammed, the lid clips on, and the whole run is checked for gaps before we call it done.

What we check along the way

Even a surface job deserves a look behind the surface. Where the route needs any fixing or drilling, we consider what the wall is made of and what may be hidden behind it — socket spurs and pipework change where screws should go. A detector helps narrow that down, but no scan guarantees the absence of hidden services, so we verify before fixing and never drill blind. If a planned route would cross something we cannot safely fix through, we will adjust the path and explain why rather than force it.

Limits and honest boundaries

Trunking is cable management, not electrical work: we route and conceal the leads, but we do not alter sockets, extend circuits or bury mains cable in the wall — changes to the electrical installation belong to a qualified electrician. Trunking also cannot make a bad route good: if the run has to leap across a doorway or climb over a ceiling line you hate, we will talk about alternatives before fitting something you will want removed next month.

Aftercare

Trunking needs little looking after. Wipe it down like the wall, re-seat the lid after any cable change, and if you repaint the room, paint the trunking at the same time so it stays invisible. If a section ever needs to come off, it removes cleanly and leaves only small fixings to fill — which is exactly why it suits rented homes and rooms you may rearrange.

Booking

Same-day slots may be available for a simple run, and planned visits suit multiple rooms or longer routes. You pay a booking fee on booking, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Trunking and fixings are quoted separately as materials once we have measured the route.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Trunking is the honest way to tame cables on a wall: a neat channel that carries leads safely, looks deliberate and can be removed without damage. Fitted badly it is the most conspicuous thing in the room; fitted properly it disappears into the paintwork. We measure, cut and fit it so it does the second thing.

Questions people ask about cable trunking installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is fitting trunking a DIY job?

It can be — sticking or screwing a channel to the wall is within most people's reach. What separates a tidy result from an obvious one is the planning and cutting: mitred corners, straight runs and the right profile for the cable bundle. If your route involves corners, several cables or any drilling into an unknown wall, it is worth having it fitted properly.

How do you fit the trunking so it stays put?

We plan the route, measure and cut the corners neatly, and fix the channel to suit the wall — anchors matched to the substrate at sensible centres, or high-bond adhesive where the surface allows and no drilling is wanted. Cables are laid in loosely, the lid is clipped on and the run is checked for gaps before we finish.

Can trunking be painted to match my wall?

Yes — paintable profiles take emulsion well, and painting the run is the single best trick for making it disappear. We recommend painting after fitting rather than before, so the fixing marks and any touches are covered too. Let us know your plans when booking, because it affects which profile we suggest.

Will you need to drill my wall?

Often not — many runs can be bonded to a sound painted surface with no drilling at all. Where fixings are needed, we check what is behind the surface before drilling, because socket spurs and pipes change where screws can safely go. No scan guarantees hidden services, so we verify rather than drill blind.

What does trunking installation cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and hourly labour with a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. The trunking itself is a separate material — the profile and length depend on your route and cables, and we confirm both after measuring.
