A fitting that punishes shortcuts twice
Curtain rails get judged twice over: first by the eye, because anything off level above a window is instantly obvious, and then by use, because curtains are pulled — firmly, daily, often by the quickest person in the house. A rail fitted into inadequate fixings survives the first week and then starts to pull its brackets from the wall, one tug at a time. Doing it right the first time is not gold-plating; it is the difference between a rail you forget about and one you re-fix every spring.
Choosing the right rail for the window
Before fitting comes a quick sense-check of what is being fitted. A straight pole across a standard recess is the simple case. Bay windows are the common complication: a straight pole bent across a bay never sits right, and bays want a proper bay pole or a made-to-measure flexible track — which we will point out if the rail you have bought does not suit the window. Curtain weight matters too: heavy lined curtains or thick blackout curtains load a rail far more than voiles, and the brackets and fixings should match. If the rail in hand is wrong for the window or the curtains, we will say so before fitting rather than put up something that will disappoint.
Where the rail sits and how it is fixed
Position is decided with the window, not just over it: high enough that curtains clear the frame and hang free, wide enough that they stack back off the glass when open rather than eating your daylight. Then the fixing plan: brackets marked square and level, spaced so the rail cannot bow under the curtains, and fixed into sound ground. Masonry walls take plugs and screws readily; plasterboard needs fixings anchored into something solid, which may mean finding the studs or using proper cavity fixings; and we check the likely routes of pipes and cables before drilling, particularly above and beside windows where cables to lights and blinds often run. We never drill blind, and if a bracket position lands on unsound ground we adjust the plan with you rather than force it.
The fitting, and getting it true
Brackets go up level in both senses — level along the rail and square to the wall — because a pole that leans outward slowly works its brackets loose. The rail is mounted, checked true along its length, and tested for glide: rings or runners should travel the full length without catching. If the curtains are on hand, we hang them and check the drop and the stack-back as a final confirmation; if they are not, we fit the rail ready for them and you hang at your leisure.
What to have ready
Have the rail, brackets and any curtain rings or gliders available and unwrapped, and know roughly which curtains are going on it — their weight changes the fixing plan. If curtains can be there on the day, even just hung temporarily, we can check the finished result properly. Clear the window sill and the space in front of the wall so we can set up and work square-on. If you are buying the rail rather than fitting one you own, say so when booking and we will discuss what suits the window before you spend anything.
Aftercare
There is very little: a correctly fitted rail needs only an occasional check that the brackets are still tight, particularly in plasterboard, and a wipe of the rail where the runners travel. If the rail starts to pull from the wall or sag between brackets, that is a fixing or a load issue — take the weight off the curtain and call us rather than nudging the brackets back in and hoping.
Booking
A straightforward straight rail on a sound wall is a short visit; a bay track, a heavy curtain load or a difficult wall takes longer, and we will scope it before starting. Same-day slots may be available if you call early. To book: the booking fee is paid on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins — any rail, fixings or hardware to be supplied are quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A curtain rail is one of those fittings that shows every shortcut: fitted off level, it looks wrong before the curtains are even hung; fitted into weak fixings, it pulls from the wall the first time the curtains are dragged shut. We fit rails and poles properly — square to the window, anchored into sound ground, and ready to carry the curtains you have chosen.

Questions people ask about curtain rail fitting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is fitting a curtain rail a DIY job?
It can be, on a solid wall with a drill and a level — plenty of people manage a straightforward pole. The common failures are brackets fixed without checking what is behind the plasterboard, and rails set off level or without enough bracket support for heavy curtains. If the wall is unknown or the curtains are heavy, having it fitted properly is a small price for never thinking about it again.
What do you check before fitting the rail?
We confirm the rail suits the window — especially whether a bay needs a proper bay pole or made-to-measure track — and that it can carry the weight of your curtains. Then we mark the bracket positions level and square, check what the wall is made of at each fixing point, avoid likely pipes and cables, and choose fixings that will not pull out under daily curtain-pulling.
Why does my current rail keep pulling away from the wall?
Almost always one of two reasons: the fixings were never matched to the wall — light plugs in plasterboard with nothing solid behind — or the brackets are too few and too widely spaced for the weight of the curtains, so the rail bows and levers at its fixings every time the curtains are drawn. The fix is better ground, better fixings or more brackets, and we can assess which at a visit.
Can you fit a rail in a bay window?
Yes, provided the rail is right for the bay. A straight pole will not follow a bay properly; bays need a hinged or made-to-measure bay pole or a flexible track, and if what you have bought will not suit the window we will tell you before fitting rather than put up something that looks wrong. Bring the bay's dimensions when you buy and you will avoid the problem.
What does the fitting cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit — more notice generally means a lower rate. We quote the full cost of the fitting before we start and you approve it. If a rail, fixings or other hardware need to be supplied, those are identified and quoted separately from the labour.
