The biggest flat pack job in the house

A wardrobe is where flat pack assembly stops being a casual job. Carcasses are heavy and tall, doors need precise hinge adjustment, and the whole unit has to stand square or the doors will never close properly. Hinged wardrobes often come in modules that must be joined and aligned with each other, and sliding-door designs add track systems that must be set perfectly level. It is several hours of careful work for most kits, and longer if the room is tight or the kit is large.

Assessing the room and the wall

We start with the practicalities: where the wardrobe will stand, whether it fits the alcove or wall you have chosen, and whether there is room to build it flat or whether it must be assembled standing. Then the wall itself. A wardrobe full of clothes is a genuinely heavy object, and one that can tip if someone leans on an open door or a child climbs it, so we discuss securing it to the wall. Whether that is possible depends on what the wall is made of — solid masonry takes anchors differently to plasterboard on studs — and we assess it before committing. If the wall will not take a safe fixing, we say so and agree alternatives with you rather than fit something we do not trust.

How the build proceeds

Everything is unpacked, checked against the parts list and sorted before assembly starts, so a missing cam lock is discovered in minute five rather than minute ninety-five. The carcass is built square and level first, because every later step inherits its accuracy: back panel, top, then doors, rails, drawers and internal fittings. Hinges are adjusted so gaps are even and doors close without springing open, runners are aligned so drawers glide, and hanging rails are properly seated so they take the weight of a full wardrobe of clothes. Adjustable feet are levelled to the floor, which matters more than people expect in older West Midlands houses where floors rarely are level.

Strength, safety and load

Wardrobes earn their keep by holding a lot of weight in a small footprint, and we respect the maker's limits. Rails and shelves are fitted as the instructions intend, wall fixings are chosen for the substrate and the load, and we check the finished unit does not rock or lean. We will point out anything that looks marginal — a bowed panel, a cracked joint — and assess what can reasonably be done, which may include manufacturer replacement parts if the kit arrived faulty. We do not leave you guessing about any of it.

Options worth deciding early

Wardrobes hide a surprising number of decisions: where the hanging rail sits, how many shelves versus drawers, whether a mirror goes inside a door, and which way hinged doors open. Most kits allow some flexibility, and deciding before the build starts is far easier than changing it afterwards. Tell us your preferences when we arrive — or say "whatever is standard" and we will follow the manufacturer's layout. If you are fitting the wardrobe into an alcove, we will also check which way the doors need to open so they do not fight a wall or a bed, and adjust the plan accordingly.

Aftercare and booking

After the build, go gently with the doors for the first week while the hinges settle, and tell us if anything drifts out of alignment — hinge adjustment is a quick follow-up. Keep the assembly instructions and any spare hardware, because they make any future move or alteration far easier. To book, call Maintenance Men and tell us the wardrobe type, the room and roughly when you need it; same-day visits may be available, the full cost is agreed with you before we start, and we are fully insured throughout.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A wardrobe is the biggest flat pack project most people take on: heavy panels, doors that must hang true, and a tall unit that needs to stand square and safe. Our handymen build wardrobes from the manufacturer's instructions, adjust every hinge and runner, and discuss wall fixing where it is appropriate. You end up with a wardrobe that closes properly, holds a full load of clothes and does not lean.

Questions people ask about wardrobe assembly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is wardrobe assembly a job I could do myself?

It is possible, and determined DIYers manage — but wardrobes are heavy, awkward and unforgiving, with long panels that need two pairs of hands and hinges that reward patience. The most common self-assembly outcome is a wardrobe that stands but never quite closes properly. If you have the time and a helper, take it slowly; otherwise we do this every week.

What do you inspect before starting the build?

We check the kit against the manufacturer's parts list so anything missing or damaged is known at the start. We look at the room — building space, the final position, floor level — and the wall construction where fixing is a possibility. Access matters too, so we confirm the route in before the heavy panels start moving.

Is it safe to leave a tall wardrobe standing unsecured?

A loaded wardrobe is heavy and can tip, particularly if a door is leaned on or a child climbs it, so we recommend restraint for tall units. Whether a wall can take a proper fixing depends on its construction, which we assess on site, and we only fit restraint where it is agreed and the wall is suitable. If it is not, we tell you plainly rather than fit something that gives false reassurance.

My floor is uneven — does that matter for a wardrobe?

It matters more than you would think. An out-of-level wardrobe twists slightly, which is why doors drift out of alignment and drawers catch, so we level the unit on its adjustable feet as part of the build. Sliding-door wardrobes are even more sensitive, because their tracks must be set level for the doors to run properly.

How is the cost worked out for wardrobe assembly?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly — the rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Before we start, the full cost is quoted and you approve it, so the price is agreed rather than discovered. If the kit needs manufacturer replacement parts, we identify them and they are quoted separately.
