Safe restoration starts with the cause

When power has been lost after a breaker trip, burning smell, damaged cable or other electrical event, restoring supply without diagnosis can re-energise the fault. The first step is to understand whether the loss affects the whole property or only certain circuits and whether the source is inside the home or outside it. The electrician asks what happened immediately beforehand and checks for heat, damage, moisture, unusual sounds or odours. If there is fire or immediate danger, get everyone clear and call emergency services first.

What to do before help arrives

Leave a tripped circuit off and do not keep resetting it. If the consumer unit is cool, dry and undamaged, the main switch can be turned off if it is safe to reach; do not touch a hot, wet or sparking board. Unplug accessible portable appliances only if there are no signs of damage at the plug or socket. Use torches, keep refrigerator doors closed and avoid candles. If neighbours are also without power, contact the electricity network operator to report a possible external outage.

The engineer checks supply and circuits

The electrician checks whether incoming power is available at the property and inspects the consumer unit and affected circuits. If nearby homes are affected or supply is absent before the installation, the network operator may need to restore the external supply. If the problem is inside, the engineer tests protective devices, wiring and relevant accessories to locate the fault. A suspected appliance can be kept disconnected while the circuit is assessed. The checks determine what can be safely returned to service and what must stay isolated.

Restoring only what is safe

A repair may involve correcting a connection, replacing a damaged fitting or protective device, repairing wiring or isolating one circuit while the rest of the installation is checked. Not every outage can be fully resolved during the first visit, particularly if concealed damage or a network fault requires another party. The electrician explains the findings, the available work and any restriction before proceeding. Power is restored to a circuit only after relevant testing supports it; temporary supply to unaffected circuits may be possible where safe.

What emergency attendance can and cannot do

An urgent visit can assess the property, make dangerous equipment safe and carry out agreed repairs that are within the electrician's remit. It cannot repair the public network, guarantee an exact restoration time or safely bypass a failed protective device. Some faults require a part, access to concealed wiring or a specialist appliance repairer. The engineer will explain if follow-up is needed and which circuits must remain off. Emergency timing does not remove the need for your approval of the quoted work.

After power returns

Reconnect equipment gradually and follow the electrician's instructions about any appliance involved in the fault. If a breaker trips again, leave it off and report what was switched on. Do not plug a suspect appliance into another room to test it. Keep any isolated circuit unused until the outstanding repair is completed. Ask for a clear explanation of what was repaired, what remains outstanding and whom to contact if symptoms return.

Request emergency restoration help

If a fault has left your home without power, arrange an electrician to check what can safely be restored. Same-day and emergency slots may be available; explain any burning smell, sparks, hot board or water exposure when booking. You pay a booking fee when you book and labour is charged hourly at a rate based on how quickly you need the visit. The full repair cost is quoted before work begins for your approval.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

A power cut caused by a fault needs more than a quick reset: the underlying problem must be found before electricity is restored. We assess the supply and consumer unit, repair or isolate the fault, then test the affected circuits so you know what can safely be used.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about emergency power restoration

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I reset the breaker to get power back quickly?

Do not keep resetting a breaker after a fault. Leave it off until the cause is checked, especially if there are signs of heat, smell, sparks or water damage.

What does the electrician check before restoring power?

They check the incoming supply, consumer unit and affected circuits, then test wiring and equipment to identify the cause. Only circuits that pass relevant checks should be returned to use.

Is an emergency power restoration visit always a complete repair?

Not always. The engineer may make the installation safe and restore unaffected circuits, while concealed damage, missing parts or an external network fault may need follow-up.

What should I do if power trips again after it returns?

Leave the affected circuit off and note what was running. Do not repeatedly reset it or reconnect a suspect appliance; arrange another check and tell the electrician what changed.

How is the visit and repair charged?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
