Repeated RCD tripping means a genuine leakage fault — we locate it with proper testing and repair the cause, not the symptom.

Why Outdoor Circuits Trip
Your outdoor circuit is protected by an RCD, which compares the current flowing out with the current returning. When some leaks away — through damp, damage or a failing component — the balance breaks and the RCD cuts the power within milliseconds. On outdoor circuits, the usual leakage sources are:
- Moisture in fittings — a socket, light or joint whose seal has failed takes on water in wet weather, leaks to earth, and trips the RCD. This is the classic "trips only when it rains" pattern.
- Damaged cable — a nicked sheath, a cut from garden work, or rodent damage lets damp reach the conductors or lets them contact earthed metalwork.
- Water ingress at cable entries — cable entering a fitting from above without a gland or drip loop feeds rain straight into the connections.
- A failing appliance or equipment — pressure washers, pumps and old extension leads with damaged insulation leak to earth, especially when wet.
- Degraded insulation — insulation that has aged, been overheated or been soaked loses its resistance and starts to leak.
Why You Should Not Just Keep Resetting It
The RCD is protecting you from shock and fire. Resetting it once after an obvious one-off is reasonable; resetting it again and again while a damp fault keeps developing is how small problems become dangerous ones. Each wet-and-trip cycle drives corrosion deeper into the connection. If the RCD will not reset at all, or trips as soon as anything on the circuit is used, stop resetting and get the circuit tested.
How We Find the Real Cause
We start with the pattern you describe — when it trips, in what weather, with what equipment connected — because patterns narrow the search immediately. Then we test rather than guess: the circuit is split into sections and each is insulation-tested for leakage, fittings are opened and inspected for water and corrosion, and suspect equipment is tested separately. The faulty section is narrowed down to the specific fitting or cable run, so the repair is targeted and the disruption is small. You will be shown what is leaking and given a firm price for the repair.
How We Fix It
The leaking component is dealt with at the source. Water-affected fittings are replaced with properly sealed weatherproof (IP-rated) units; corroded joints are remade in weather-rated enclosures; damaged cable is repaired or replaced and routed so the same damage cannot recur. If a particular appliance or lead is the leaker, we will show you the evidence so you can retire it with confidence. Only when the circuit has been tested clean do we reset the protection and leave — and we verify the RCD's response before we go.
Aftercare and Prevention
The best prevention is keeping water out of the system: sound seals, cable entering fittings from below, connections out of standing water. After we repair the circuit, note which fittings we flagged as weather-worn, and keep an ear out for the trip pattern returning — a circuit that starts tripping again after months of quiet means a new entry point has opened and is worth a prompt look. Avoid using damaged extension leads outdoors; they are a frequent hidden cause.
When to Call Us
Book a routine visit for any repeating trip pattern, even one that resets happily — the cause is still there and getting worse. Book urgently if the RCD will not reset at all, if tripping comes with a burning smell, scorching or heat, or if you can see water inside any fitting; switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and call us the same day.
Book Your Tripping Circuit Diagnosis Today
We diagnose tripping outdoor circuits across the West Midlands as routine work, with appointments around your week and same-day slots where available. Call or book online and describe the pattern — weather-dependent trips, load-dependent trips, or trips that happen regardless — and what the circuit feeds. We will find the leak and stop the trips where they start.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

An outdoor circuit that trips — once, repeatedly, or only in wet weather — is a protective device doing exactly what it is designed to do. The tripping itself is not the problem; whatever it is detecting is. We test the circuit properly, find the moisture, damage or failing component that is causing the leakage, and repair it so the trips stop for a real reason.

Questions people ask about tripping outdoor circuit
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
It trips but always resets fine — is that okay?
A trip that resets cleanly and never returns was probably a one-off. But if it trips regularly, even occasionally, a leakage fault is present and developing — the RCD is catching it each time. Each wet-dry cycle corrodes the connection further, so the intervals usually shorten. Get the cause tested rather than resetting indefinitely.
Why does it only trip when it rains?
That pattern almost always means water is reaching live parts somewhere on the circuit — usually a failed seal, a cable entry, or a joint sitting in a damp spot. In dry weather the connection is merely damp; in rain it leaks enough to trip the RCD. It will not stay seasonal forever, so it is worth tracing soon.
Could an appliance be causing the trips?
Yes — pressure washers, pumps, old extension reels and equipment with damaged leads are common culprits, especially when used wet. We can test by disconnecting equipment and re-testing the circuit, and we can test the suspect appliance itself. If the trips stop when a particular item is unplugged, you have your answer.
What will this cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Is the tripping dangerous in itself?
The tripping is your protection working — the danger is what it is protecting you from. While the RCD holds, the circuit is essentially cut off when leakage occurs. The real risks arise if someone bypasses or ignores the trips, or if the fault worsens to the point of heat or arcing. Treat the cause, and the danger goes with it.
