How a circuit breaker protects you
A circuit breaker switches off when current on its circuit rises beyond the device’s operating range, helping protect wiring from overload or short circuit. It is different from an RCD, which responds to an imbalance that can indicate current leaking to earth. In some consumer units, one device combines both functions. A breaker may be faulty, but an otherwise healthy device can also trip correctly because of a separate appliance or wiring fault. Identifying which type of device has operated is an important first step.
Signs the breaker itself may be faulty
A breaker can become worn or damaged, fail to latch, feel loose, or trip inconsistently. Heat marks, a burning smell or a switch that behaves differently from neighbouring devices are further reasons to arrange an inspection. These signs do not prove the breaker is the only problem. A loose connection, deteriorated cable or repeated overload can damage or stress the device, and those conditions need to be checked before a replacement is fitted.
Tests that distinguish device from circuit
The electrician checks the breaker’s condition and identifies exactly what it supplies. They inspect the connected circuit and use appropriate electrical tests to assess the wiring, protective operation and possible faults. Depending on the symptoms, appliances may need to be disconnected during the investigation. The goal is to tell whether the breaker has failed, is responding to a real circuit fault, or both. We explain the results and quote for the repair before starting chargeable work.
Replacing a breaker is not always the answer
If the breaker is defective and the circuit is sound, replacing it with a suitable device may resolve the problem. If tests reveal an overload, short circuit, damaged cable or poor connection, that issue must also be addressed. A new breaker should not be used to mask a fault or to increase the circuit rating without checking the cable and design. The electrician will explain any limits on what can be restored during the visit.
Testing after the work
Once the repair is complete, the affected circuit is tested and the breaker’s operation is checked. The electrician explains which appliances belong to the circuit and any signs that should prompt you to stop using them. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and report what was running at the time. That pattern can help reveal a developing appliance or circuit problem rather than encouraging repeated resets.
What the visit involves
The electrician identifies the suspect breaker, checks the circuit it supplies and tests for faults before deciding whether the device itself needs replacing. They will ask what happens when it trips and whether you have noticed heat, smell or damage. You receive the findings and proposed cost before work starts. The repaired circuit is checked before it is returned to normal use.
Aftercare and safety
Do not force a breaker to stay on or replace it with a higher-rated one yourself. If the unit is hot, smells burnt or sparks, keep clear and arrange urgent help. Leave a breaker off if it trips again after the repair.
Book your electrical visit
Book a circuit-breaker inspection if it will not latch or keeps operating. Tell us which circuit it supplies and what was in use when it tripped.
Further details for your electrician
A breaker that trips once under a heavy load may be responding normally, while a device that will not latch or trips under ordinary use needs closer attention. The electrician considers the circuit rating, connected equipment and test results together. Do not fit a larger breaker to stop nuisance trips: the cable must be suitable for its protection. Any proposed device change should follow checks of the circuit it is intended to protect.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A circuit breaker that will not stay on, trips without a clear reason or fails to operate properly needs more than a quick swap. We test the breaker and the wiring it protects so the repair addresses the cause, not just the symptom.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about faulty circuit breaker
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I replace a circuit breaker myself?
No. Work inside a consumer unit involves electrical hazards and the replacement must suit the installation. An electrician should test the circuit and fit the correct device.
How will the electrician diagnose the problem?
The electrician checks its operation alongside the circuit it protects, using inspection and electrical tests. This helps distinguish a failed device from an overload, appliance fault or damaged wiring.
Is it dangerous if a breaker trips repeatedly?
Repeated trips mean the cause needs checking; the breaker may be responding to a fault. Heat, burning smells, sparks or visible damage make the situation urgent.
Does a replacement breaker stop future trips?
Only if the breaker itself is the problem. If an appliance or wiring fault is causing the trips, that must be repaired too.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
