Surface water drainage installation means giving rainwater a designed route off your property: from roofs, drives, paths and gardens, through gullies, channels and pipes, to an outfall that genuinely works — a soakaway in ground that drinks, an existing drainage run, a watercourse with permission, or a pumped system where gravity has no route. It is a design exercise as much as a building job, and the design starts with your ground.

What the survey covers

We map the water first: how much roof area drains where, what paved surfaces shed and in which direction, where water currently pools and where it tries to go. We dig trial holes and time infiltration rates across the site, because ground conditions decide everything downstream of that — whether a soakaway is viable, where land drainage can realistically lead, and whether a pumped element is needed. We check falls and levels across the property, locate existing drainage — gullies, runs, old soakaways — and assess what can be reused. Before any digging we check carefully for buried services using detectors where appropriate; no scan guarantees what is below, and utility plans are the customer's responsibility to provide.

Designing the network

The design follows the survey. Gullies and channel drains are positioned at the low points where water actually collects. Pipe runs are graded to carry water at self-cleansing speeds — too flat and they silt, too steep and water outruns solids. Silt traps are placed where debris enters, so they can be emptied rather than washed into the system. The outfall gets the most thought: a correctly calculated soakaway where the ground accepts water, a connection to an existing run where one exists and has capacity, land drainage to a ditch or lower ground where the site allows, or a pumped outfall where gravity has nowhere to go. We size everything from measured areas and rates, not rule of thumb.

Building it

Installation is a quoted project, and this job's estimate covers one working day of it on an agreed scope — a full installation typically takes longer depending on ground, access and weather, and is staged with you informed throughout. The sequence is excavation, pipe laying on proper bedding, chamber and gully construction, the outfall built and tested, then backfill and surface reinstatement. Groundworks are weather-sensitive: saturated ground makes a mess and weakens excavations, so we schedule sensibly and say when conditions should delay work. Larger or phased installations are planned accordingly.

Permissions and honest limits

Permissions around how surface water is disposed of — connections, watercourse discharges, soakaway permissibility — are the customer's responsibility to establish; we explain what is involved but do not make compliance promises. And we are honest about outcomes: a well-designed system copes with ordinary rainfall and gives margin in heavy rain, but no system guarantees a dry property in extreme weather, and water arriving from beyond your boundary is beyond any single-property installation. We say that before quoting, not after.

Aftercare

A new system needs looking after to stay new: keep gutters clean, clear gully and channel gratings in autumn, empty silt traps, and watch emptying times after rain. Slowing emptying is the early sign of silt building, and catching it early is a clearing job rather than a project.

Booking

Book a survey visit and tell us what the system needs to handle — which roofs, drives and areas — plus any history: old drainage, previous works, known services. Photos after rain are useful. The survey produces the design and the quote; installation follows once you approve both and a weather window arrives.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When a property has no working route for surface water — or the old one has failed — the answer is a designed system, not a quick fix. We look at everything: roofs, drives, ground conditions, falls and possible outfalls. Then we design the network that fits your ground, quote it as a full project, and build it only once you have approved the plan and the price.

What our customers say about our drainage service

4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray

Happy overall

Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.

Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about surface water drainage installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is any of a drainage installation a DIY job?

Clearing gratings and keeping an eye on how the system behaves afterwards is genuinely DIY. The installation itself is not: designing falls, sizing pipes and outfalls, excavating safely around buried services and connecting into existing drainage all need proper equipment and know-how. Mistakes in a new system are expensive to reach once buried, so most people have it designed and installed professionally.

What does your design survey involve?

We map where water comes from and where it pools, dig trial holes to measure how the ground absorbs water, check falls and levels, and locate existing drainage worth reusing. Before any digging we check for buried services — detectors help, but no scan guarantees what is below, and utility plans are yours to provide. The survey produces the design and the quote.

What if my ground won't accept a soakaway?

Then the design changes, and we will say so rather than force one in. Options include land drainage carrying water to a working outfall, connecting to an existing drainage run with capacity, or a pumped outfall where gravity has no route. The survey decides which fits your ground — that is why testing comes before any quote, not after.

How long does installing a surface water system take?

It is a quoted project, and the estimate for this job covers one working day of it on an agreed scope. A full installation — excavation, pipe laying, gullies, chambers, outfall and reinstatement — typically takes longer depending on ground, access and weather. We stage the work, keep you informed, and schedule groundworks sensibly because saturated ground is both messy and weak to dig.

How is a new drainage system priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The installation is quoted as a full project after survey — design, excavation, materials and reinstatement included — and nothing starts until you approve that price. Parts and materials are quoted separately, so the final cost is agreed before work begins.
