A washing machine that refuses to switch on is one of the most disheartening appliance faults, because nothing lights up and nothing happens when you press the start button. The good news is that a completely dead machine often comes down to a small number of straightforward causes, and not all of them mean the machine has failed. This page explains what we check, how we diagnose the fault, and what your options are once we know the answer.

Why a washing machine shows no sign of life

The most common causes of a machine that will not turn on are the simplest ones. The wall socket may not be live, the plug fuse may have blown, or the appliance may have been switched off at an isolator or unplugged by mistake. Beyond the supply, the usual suspects are the door interlock, which stops the machine running unless the door is properly closed and latched, the mains filter or wiring inside the machine, and occasionally the control board itself. Power surges and water getting into electronics can also knock out the board, which is why a machine that died after a leak deserves a careful inspection.

How we diagnose the fault

When we visit, we start with the supply rather than the machine. We test the wall socket, check the plug and fuse, and confirm the switch and wiring feeding the socket are sound. If the supply is healthy, we move on to the appliance: testing the door interlock, checking continuity through the internal wiring, and examining the control board for obvious signs of damage such as scorching, corrosion or water ingress. Where the machine displays fault codes or blinks a pattern of lights, we note these too, because they help narrow the diagnosis. We explain what we have found in plain English before recommending any next step.

Repair and replacement options

What can be repaired depends entirely on what has failed. A blown fuse, a damaged socket or a worn cable is usually a quick, inexpensive fix. A faulty door interlock is a common replacement part on most makes, and control boards can often be replaced where they are still available, although board costs vary a lot between brands. If the machine is old and the failed part is expensive or difficult to source, we will say so honestly and give you the information you need to weigh repair against replacement. We never fit parts or start work you have not approved.

Limits, safety and aftercare

Please do not open the machine's casing yourself or attempt to bypass the door lock. Washers combine mains electricity with water, and the door interlock exists to keep the drum from running with the door open. If you have noticed burning smells, scorch marks or the socket tripping repeatedly, stop using the machine and leave the isolation to us or another competent person. If a socket trips again straight after resetting, do not keep resetting it.

When to call us

Book a visit if your machine is completely dead, if it keeps tripping the electrics, or if you have already checked the socket and fuse without success. When booking, it helps to tell us the brand and model number, whether the machine is totally silent or shows any flicker of light, and whether anything happened just before the fault appeared, such as a leak, a storm or a new appliance on the same socket. You can call Maintenance Men or send a message through the website, and we will arrange a time that suits you and give you a clear quote before any work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A washing machine that shows no lights at all stops the household in its tracks. Some causes are as simple as a tripped socket or blown fuse, while others sit inside the machine's door lock or electronics. We test each stage in order so you get a clear answer on what has failed and what it will take to put right.

Questions people ask about washing machine not turning on

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I check anything myself before booking?

Yes, the safe basics only. Confirm the machine is switched on at the wall, try a lamp in the same socket to prove the socket is live, and check the plug fuse if you are comfortable doing so. Do not open the machine's casing or touch anything behind the back panel.

What will the engineer check during the visit?

We test the socket and supply, the plug and fuse, the door interlock, internal wiring continuity and the control board for visible damage. We also note any fault codes the machine displays. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a quote before any repair is agreed.

Is it safe to keep pressing the start button repeatedly?

There is no harm in trying once more after checking the socket, but repeated attempts will not help a genuine fault. If you smell burning, see scorch marks or the socket trips when you press start, stop using the machine and leave it switched off at the wall.

My machine went dead after a water leak underneath – is that connected?

Very possibly. Water reaching the control board or wiring can cause exactly this kind of failure. Tell us about the leak when booking, because we will want to trace where the water came from as well as testing the electrics, and the two problems may need separate fixes.

How much does the visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit – the more notice you can give, the better the rate. We quote the full cost before starting work and you approve it first. Any parts we identify are quoted separately.
