A dryer that gives you nothing at all, no display, no light, no hum when you press start, is behaving differently from one that powers up and then refuses to run. Silence usually means the machine is not receiving power, or something inside has deliberately interrupted it. That could be as ordinary as a blown plug fuse or as involved as a failed control board, and the only sensible way to tell them apart is to work through the circuit in order.
Checks worth making before you book
Confirm the socket is live by plugging in a lamp or phone charger. Look at the plug for a cracked body, brown scorching or a loose cable grip, and check that the door is firmly shut, because many dryers will not illuminate until the interlock closes. If the plug contains a fuse, note whether it has blown, but treat a second failure as a warning: a fuse that blows twice is protecting you from a fault inside the appliance and should not be replaced again. Do not take the lid or back panel off, and never probe internal connectors with the machine plugged in. If you can see damage to the cable or smell burning, stop using it and isolate it only if the plug is accessible and your hands are dry.
How the visit is structured
We begin at the supply, then move to the plug and cable, the door interlock, any internal fuse or thermal cut-out, and finally the control board and its connections. Each stage is tested rather than assumed, because a board that looks dead is sometimes only starved of power by an earlier component. On condensing and heat-pump models we also check whether the machine is stuck in a protection state after a previous overheat or drainage fault, which can present as a total failure to respond. You will get a plain account of which link in that chain has failed.
Faults we commonly find
Loose or scorched wiring at the terminal block, a failed door switch that never reports the door as closed, a blown thermal cut-out after restricted airflow, water ingress onto the board on condensing models, and tired start relays or capacitors on older machines. Less often the board itself has failed, sometimes after a power surge. We also see dryers that were never faulty at all but were plugged into a switched spur that had been turned off, or into an extension lead that could not carry the load.
Repair, parts and honest limits
Some of these are quick fixes with an inexpensive part. Others, particularly a discontinued board on an older model, may not be economic, and we will say so rather than talk you into a repair that does not make sense. Parts are identified from the model and serial plate and quoted separately, and availability varies by brand and age. We cannot promise a particular component is in stock, and we will not fit a second-hand board as a shortcut. If the machine is still under a manufacturer's plan, tell us, because using it may be the better route.
Before and after the visit
Empty the drum and have the model number to hand, usually on a sticker inside the door or on the rear panel. Clear access to the plug and to the back of the machine if it is a vented model. After a repair, run one short cycle with a small load and check that the machine completes it without tripping the supply. If anything trips again, unplug it and call us back rather than resetting repeatedly.
Booking the right appointment
Book online or by phone and describe the symptom precisely: no lights at all, lights but no response, or a display that flashes and dies. Mention the brand, model and approximate age, and whether the dryer is vented, condensing or heat pump. That tells us what to bring and how long to allow, and it means the first visit is spent diagnosing rather than gathering basics.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A dryer that stays completely dark is unsettling, especially with a wet load inside and laundry piling up. It usually points to a supply or protection fault rather than the drum or motor, and the good news is that those causes are traceable. The visit is a structured electrical check from the plug inwards, with a clear explanation of what has failed and what it will take to put it right.

Questions people ask about tumble dryer not turning on
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is there anything I can safely check myself before booking?
Yes. Test the socket with another appliance, inspect the plug for scorching or damage, and confirm the door is fully closed. Do not remove panels or test internal parts with the dryer plugged in, and do not keep replacing a fuse that blows.
What does the engineer actually check during the visit?
We test the supply and plug, the cable and terminal block, the door interlock, any internal fuse or thermal cut-out, and the control board with its connectors. Each result is explained so you know which part has failed and why.
Could this be dangerous if I ignore it?
A dryer with no power is not usually hazardous in itself, but a blown fuse, scorched plug or burning smell can indicate damaged wiring. If you see scorching or smell burning, stop using the machine and have it assessed rather than swapping the fuse again.
Will you know straight away whether it can be repaired?
In most cases yes, because the diagnosis follows a fixed sequence and the failed component becomes obvious. Occasionally a board fault needs confirmation with the manufacturer's data, and we will tell you if that is the case before ordering anything.
How is the price worked out?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for the diagnosis and any agreed repair, and you approve it before work starts. Parts are identified and quoted separately, with no figures invented in advance.
