The dryer door does two jobs: it keeps the load in and it operates a safety interlock that prevents the drum turning when open. If the door does not close squarely, the interlock never confirms, and the machine either refuses to start or stops mid-cycle. The mechanical parts involved are the hinges, the catch or striker, the latch plate and the door seal, plus the frame they mount to.

What a poor close feels like

The door bounces back instead of latching. It needs a lift or a push at one corner to engage. It sits proud of the frame on one side. There is a gap you can see light through. The machine starts and then stops after a few seconds. The door opens itself during a cycle. Each of these points to alignment rather than electronics, though a worn interlock can produce the same refusal to start.

Checks you can make

With the dryer off, open and close the door slowly and watch where it catches. Look at the hinges for loose screws, and at the catch for wear or a piece broken off. Check the seal for splits, hardness or a build-up of lint that stops it compressing. Look for anything trapped in the latch recess, such as a sock corner or a build-up of lint. Do not force the door, bend the hinges or remove the inner panel to reach the latch.

What we examine on the visit

We check the hinge mounting and whether the door has dropped on its pins, test the catch and striker for wear and correct engagement, inspect the latch plate and its fixings, and check the seal for compression and fit. The interlock switch is tested separately, because a door that closes correctly but still will not run has a switch or wiring fault rather than an alignment problem. Where the door frame or inner panel is distorted, we identify whether it can be straightened or needs replacement.

Common causes

Hinges loosening or bending after years of use. A catch worn to a rounded edge so it no longer holds. A seal that has hardened and pushes the door away. Lint packed into the latch recess. A door knocked while the machine was being moved. On some models a broken plastic latch housing, which is a replaceable part.

Repair options and cost

Hinges, catches and seals are inexpensive parts and the repair is usually quick. A distorted door or frame can cost more and may not be worth repairing on an older machine. We quote before ordering, and we will tell you if a part is unavailable for your model. We do not bend hinges as a shortcut, because that usually produces a poor seal and a repeat visit.

Safety

Never tape, wedge or tie the door shut to make the machine run. The interlock exists to stop the drum while the door is open, and defeating it removes a basic protection. If the door has been forced and now latches loosely, stop using the machine until it is checked, because it may open during a cycle.

After the repair

Close the door several times and check it latches with a normal push and no lift. Run a short cycle and confirm the machine does not stop partway. Wipe the seal and the latch recess monthly, and check the hinges for looseness once in a while. If the door needs a lift again, tell us early rather than forcing it.

Booking the visit

Tell us whether the door bounces open, needs a lift, or closes but the machine will not start. Give the brand and model. If the door was damaged during a move or a repair, mention it, because that often explains a sudden change in alignment.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A door that will not sit shut, springs back open or needs a shove to latch will stop the dryer running altogether, because the interlock will not authorise a start. The cause is usually mechanical and often inexpensive: a hinge that has dropped, a catch that has worn, or a seal that has swollen. The visit sets the door alignment and replaces only what is worn.

Questions people ask about dryer door not closing properly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I adjust the door myself?

You can check for loose hinge screws, lint in the latch recess and wear on the catch, and you can clean the seal. Do not bend hinges, force the door or remove the inner panel; misalignment usually needs proper adjustment rather than pressure.

What do you check during the visit?

We inspect the hinges and their mounting, the catch and striker, the latch plate, the door seal and the interlock switch. That separates an alignment problem from a failed switch or wiring fault.

Is it safe to hold the door shut with tape?

No. The interlock is a safety device that stops the drum when the door opens. Taping or wedging the door defeats it and risks the door opening during a cycle, so the machine should be repaired instead.

Will the whole door need replacing?

Usually not. Hinges, catches and seals are separate replaceable parts. A distorted door or frame may need replacement, and we will tell you if that is the case and whether it is economic on your machine.

How is the price worked out?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for your approval before work starts, and parts such as hinges or catches are priced separately.
