An oven that will not turn on brings the kitchen to a halt, and it is frustrating because the range of possible causes is wider than most people expect. Sometimes it is a five-minute fix; other times it points to a control fault that needs proper attention. The only way to tell the difference is to test the appliance methodically, and that is exactly what our visit is for.

Tell us the fuel type when you book

An electric oven that will not switch on is an electrical fault we can diagnose and, where appropriate, repair. A gas oven that will not light involves ignition and gas components, and gas work is strictly for Gas Safe registered engineers. We are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work, but we can assess safely within our limits, explain what the symptoms suggest and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work with closely. Let us know the brand, model and fuel type when booking so the right engineer and approach are planned from the start.

Where a dead oven usually begins

The first checks are the ones you can safely do yourself: is the oven switched on at the isolator or wall switch, has a breaker or fuse in the consumer unit tripped, is the clock or timer set correctly, and does the display show anything at all? Many ovens simply refuse to operate when the automatic timer has been set by accident or after a power cut. If those basics are fine, the fault lies deeper, and that is where we come in.

What we test on site

With the appliance safely isolated we work through the supply path: the isolator, the connection point, the internal wiring and terminal block, then the on/off switch, door switch, timer and control board or electronic controls. We look for burnt connections, loose terminals, failed switches and signs of overheating, and we test components electrically rather than guessing from appearance. On a gas appliance we stop at the boundary of anything gas-related and hand that part of the job to a Gas Safe engineer.

Common outcomes

Frequently the fix is modest: a failed switch, a burnt terminal that needs cleaning and remaking properly, a tripped circuit that needs a genuine fault found rather than just resetting, or a timer that needs correct setting. Other times the control board has failed, and we will discuss whether a replacement board is available and worth fitting for your model. Occasionally an oven is beyond economic repair, and we will say so plainly rather than selling you work it does not need.

Safety notes worth reading

If you smell gas at any point, do not operate electrical switches or appliances, open doors and windows if safe, turn the gas off at the meter only if you can do so safely, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. Do not re-enter until you are advised it is safe. Burning smells, scorching or repeated tripping on an electric oven mean stop using it until it has been checked.

How to book

Send us your postcode, the oven's make and model, whether it is electric or gas, and what happens when you try to switch it on. We will arrange a convenient visit, diagnose the fault fully and quote for the repair before any work begins. Same-day attendance is sometimes possible; we will confirm honestly what we can offer when you get in touch.

One final thought: if the oven was working yesterday and is dead today, note anything that changed, such as a power cut, a trip at the consumer unit or a cleaning session. That history often shortens the diagnosis considerably.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

When an oven will not turn on at all, the problem can sit anywhere between the wall socket and the control board, so testing is the only honest way forward. Our visit covers the supply, the switches, the controls and the wiring, and ends with a clear explanation and a quoted price. You will know whether this is a small fix or a bigger decision before you commit to anything.

Questions people ask about oven not turning on

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there anything I can safely try before calling?

Yes: check the oven is switched on at the wall or isolator, check the consumer unit for a tripped breaker, and check the clock or timer is not set to automatic, which is a very common cause after power cuts. Beyond that, leave the internal testing to us.

What does the diagnosis involve?

We safely isolate the appliance and test the supply path, wiring, terminals, switches, timer and control board, looking for failed components and signs of overheating. You get a clear explanation of the fault and a written price for any recommended repair before we start.

You repaired my neighbour's gas oven, so can you fix mine?

We do not carry out any gas work, and we would not have repaired a gas oven's gas side. If your gas oven will not light, we can assess what is safely within our scope, explain the likely cause and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work with closely.

The oven came with the flat and has no manual. Can you still help?

Yes. Give us the brand and model number from the rating plate, usually inside the door or on the back, and we can identify the appliance and its parts. Even without a manual we can test the components directly.

How is the cost worked out?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, with shorter notice costing more. After diagnosing the fault we quote the full cost, including any parts identified, and the work only goes ahead once you have approved it.
