Why a moved fridge needs checking

Transport is hard on fridges. Being tilted on its side lets compressor oil migrate into the cooling pipework, which is why manufacturers ask you to leave it upright before switching on — sometimes for several hours. If the fridge spent the move in a cold garage or van overnight, let it reach room temperature before switching on, because powering up a very cold appliance can affect its behaviour. Wipe the seals and check for flat spots while it settles, since seals pressed against a closed door in transit unseat easily. Doors and hinges take knocks, seals can unseat from their channels, and the adjustable feet get bent or lost. Water-fed models have dispenser lines that can work loose or kink during a move.

Reinstallation is where those issues get caught. Plugging a freshly-moved fridge straight in and shoving it against the wall is how small transit damage becomes a cooling fault that looks mysterious three weeks later.

What happens on the visit

The engineer checks the route and the new position — dimensions, floor, and the clearance the manufacturer specifies at the back and top. We inspect the appliance for transit damage: doors, hinges, seals, feet, and the rear pipework and components. For water-fed models we reconnect to the existing accessible supply point and check every joint for weeping before the cabinet goes back against the wall.

Then we level the cabinet properly, confirm the doors close under their own weight and the seals grip all round, restore the correct rear clearance, and power up. We let the appliance start cooling and verify lights, fans, temperature response and any dispenser are behaving before we finish.

If the fridge has been unplugged for a while

Follow the manufacturer's standing time before switching on — it matters if the fridge travelled on its side, because the oil needs to settle back. We can advise on the specific model when we arrive. If the fridge was in storage for months, expect the first run to smell stale: clean the interior and leave a box of bicarbonate of soda inside rather than masking it.

Limits, stated plainly

We work with existing sockets and existing accessible water supply points; we do not install new circuits, and plumbing beyond reconnecting to an existing accessible point is outside a standard reinstallation — that needs a plumber, which we can discuss. If the new position has no suitable socket, insufficient clearance or a floor that cannot take the weight, we will say so at the site check rather than install into a position that causes faults. If extra work turns up — a damaged seal, a bent foot, a loose hinge — it is quoted separately and you approve it before we proceed.

After reinstallation

Give the appliance time to reach temperature before loading food, load gradually, and avoid pushing it fully back against the wall. Check over the next few days that the doors stay shut, the seals hold and no water appears under a dispenser model. Anything that seems off in the first week is worth a quick call — early adjustments are fast.
