A fan that won't respond to its switch feels like a dead fan, but very often the fan is perfectly healthy and the switching between you and it has failed. That's good news financially, because switches, pull cords and humidity controls cost a fraction of a fan replacement – provided the fault is correctly identified before anything is bought.

The switching arrangements we work with

UK extractor fans are switched in several ways: a simple wall switch; a pull cord switch, standard in bathrooms; a three-pole isolator used for isolation; a humidistat that switches the fan automatically on humidity; a PIR or timer module that runs the fan after the light or occupancy; or combinations of these. Each has its own failure modes. Pull cord mechanisms wear and fail to latch or make contact internally. Wall switches fail internally while looking perfectly normal. Humidistats drift out of calibration or fail entirely. Timer modules develop faults where the fan won't start, or won't stop running. And sometimes the wiring behind a switch – loosened over years or disturbed by decorating – is the real problem.

Telling the fault apart from a dead fan

Two observations help enormously before we arrive. First, if the fan used to run when the light was switched on and still does nothing, note whether the light itself works – if the light is on the same switching arrangement and works, the fault is likely in the fan-specific part of the circuit. Second, check whether the isolator is on and whether anything at the consumer unit has tripped. Beyond that, leave the testing to us: switch plates hide live parts, and in bathrooms the wiring zones have specific safety requirements.

How we test the switching chain

Our engineer tests voltage through each stage of the switching arrangement with proper instruments, from the isolator through the switch or sensor to the fan's control terminals. We check pull cord mechanisms for internal wear, wall switches for contact failure, humidistats for correct triggering, and timer modules for correct operation. We also inspect the terminations behind each device, since a loose or heat-damaged connection mimics a failed switch perfectly. Once the failed component is identified, the repair is usually a straightforward replacement of that one device.

What the repair involves

Replacing a pull cord or wall switch is quick and tidy. Replacing a humidistat involves matching the correct type for the fan. A faulty timer module is swapped where the fan allows module-only replacement – on many models that avoids a full fan change. Any wiring corrections needed behind the devices are made to current standards. If testing shows the switch was fine and the fault lies in the fan itself, we'll tell you that instead, and quote the appropriate repair or replacement.

What the visit typically takes

Most no-power diagnoses are completed within the booked hour, since testing at each stage is quick once access to the isolator and fan is established. Where the fault turns out to involve hidden wiring or a fan that needs ordering, we'll tell you at the point the diagnosis is confirmed, and any follow-on work is quoted separately rather than assumed into the first visit.

Switching upgrades worth considering

If you're replacing a failed switch anyway, it can be worth considering an upgrade at the same time. A humidistat control switches the fan automatically when humidity rises, which is ideal for bathrooms where nobody reliably remembers to flick the switch, and a timer module keeps the fan running for fifteen or twenty minutes after you leave the room. Whether either suits you depends on the fan model and wiring, and we'll advise what's compatible and quote the difference before you decide.

Booking

Message or call with the room, the type of switching you have, and whether the light or anything else on the same circuit still works – that detail genuinely speeds diagnosis. Same-day visits may be available. We'll test the switching chain, replace what's failed, and quote before starting.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When the fan ignores its switch, the fault is usually in the switching arrangement rather than the fan motor – and a failed switch is one of the cheapest fan repairs there is. We test the whole switching chain, from the isolator through to the fan's control input, and replace exactly what's failed.

Questions people ask about fan switch not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

How do I know if it's the switch or the fan that's failed?

You often can't tell without testing, which is why diagnosis comes before any parts. Clues help: if the light on the same circuit works but the fan doesn't, the fault is likely in the fan-specific switching. If the fan hums but never starts, the fault is more likely in the fan. We test voltage through each stage to confirm.

Can a pull cord switch be repaired rather than replaced?

Occasionally a cord can be re-threaded, but the internal mechanism usually can't be overhauled – replacement is the normal fix and it's a quick job. If you book this fault, mention it's a pull cord arrangement so we arrive with the right parts approach.

My fan runs constantly and won't turn off – is that a switch fault too?

Very possibly – a failed timer module, humidistat stuck in a triggered state, or a wiring fault can leave a fan running permanently. It's worth fixing soon since a constantly running fan wears out faster and wastes energy. The same systematic switching-chain test identifies which component is at fault.

Is there any switch work I can safely do myself?

Checking the isolator is on and resetting a tripped breaker is as far as we'd advise. Switch plates conceal live parts even when the switch appears off, and bathroom wiring has specific zone requirements. Switch replacement needs the circuit properly isolated and tested – that's competent-person work.

What does a switch fault diagnosis cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Switch replacements are among the quickest fan repairs, and the full cost – labour plus the replacement switch – is quoted for your approval before any work starts. Parts are quoted separately from labour.
