An intercom screen that has stopped working entirely — black, frozen, or ignoring every button press — needs a structured diagnosis, because the symptom looks the same whether the failure is in the power feed, the display or the control electronics. The good news is that many of these faults are cheaper to fix than the symptom suggests.

Why a screen stops working

Power problems are the first suspect: a failed plug-in adapter, a blown internal fuse, a tripped supply or a bad connection can leave the unit apparently dead while the entrance panel works fine. Display failures come next — the backlight or panel electronics reach the end of their service life, usually after years of faithful operation. Control failures present differently: the screen shows an image but buttons do nothing, which points to the keypad or control board. Frozen screens that never change often indicate corrupted internal electronics, sometimes triggered by a power surge. On some systems a handset that has simply been knocked out of its cradle or switched off presents exactly like a dead unit, which is why we check the basics before opening anything.

How we diagnose it

We establish the pattern first: is the unit completely dead, dead but with a standby light, showing an image but unresponsive, or frozen mid-display? Each pattern points elsewhere. We then verify the power supply at the socket and at the unit, check internal fuses and connections where accessible, test the display, and exercise the controls. Where the fault is ambiguous, substituting a known-good monitor settles it quickly. On multi-flat systems, whether other residents are affected tells us whether we are dealing with your equipment or shared plant. We also ask whether the failure followed a storm or power cut — surge damage is a real and common cause.

Repairs and options

Typical outcomes are a replacement power adapter, a replacement monitor, a repaired internal connection, or a new control board where the manufacturer supplies one. Where a monitor is obsolete, we will present the honest options, including a compatible modern replacement and what that involves. Parts are quoted separately, and the full cost of the work is approved by you before we start — we do not carry out repairs on the strength of a diagnosis alone. In shared buildings, work on communal equipment needs landlord or managing agent permission, and we never force doors or bypass building security to gain access for testing.

Safe checks before we arrive

Confirm the unit is switched on, that any brightness setting has not been turned to minimum, and that a plug-in power adapter's socket works with another device. Reseating a plug-in handset is safe too. Do not open the monitor casing — capacitors inside can hold charge, and the internals are not user-serviceable.

What we will be straight about

We diagnose first and quote second, so no cost or repair time can be promised before we have tested the unit. If the monitor has failed beyond economic repair — common with old units whose parts are no longer made — we will say so plainly rather than take on work that cannot succeed. Intermittent faults may need a second visit to catch in the act, and we will tell you if that is likely.

When to book

Call when the screen is dead, frozen or unresponsive to every control, when it died after a power cut or storm, or when it behaves erratically — flickering, restarting or showing corrupted images. Tell us the make and model if known, whether audio still works at the panel, and whether other flats are affected.

A dead intercom screen should not leave you guessing at your front door. Get in touch and we will diagnose it properly, quote it clearly and put it right.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When the whole intercom unit stops responding — no picture, no buttons, no sound — it is easy to assume the worst. In practice the causes are usually specific and often repairable. We test the unit's power, display and controls in order, identify what has actually failed, and quote the repair before any work begins.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about intercom screen not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there any DIY fix for a dead intercom screen?

Safe checks are: confirm the unit is on, check brightness settings, test the power socket with another device and reseat a plug-in handset. Do not open the monitor — internal components can hold charge and are not user-serviceable.

What do you test when an intercom screen stops working?

We classify the fault by its pattern, then verify the power supply and socket, check accessible fuses and connections, test the display and exercise the controls. You get a specific diagnosis and a full quote before any repair is carried out.

Could a power cut have damaged my intercom?

Yes — surges during power cuts and storms commonly kill intercom adapters and monitors. If the failure followed an outage, mention it when you book; it helps us look in the right place first, and the repair is often a replacement adapter or unit.

What if my intercom model is discontinued?

We will tell you honestly if parts are unavailable and set out the realistic options, which usually include a compatible modern replacement monitor. Any replacement is quoted for your approval before it is ordered or fitted — nothing is decided without you.

What does the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. Once we have diagnosed the fault, the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts such as adapters or monitors quoted separately.
