Why low water flow from tap happens

The most common cause is the aerator, the small mesh insert at the spout end, which clogs with limescale and debris. Beyond that, flow can be restricted by a squeezed or kinked flexible connector under the sink, a partly closed isolating valve or stopcock, debris caught in the valve cartridge after pipework work upstream, or a washer that has swollen and partially blocked the opening. On mixer taps, a failed cartridge can throttle one supply while the other runs fine. In hard-water areas, scale builds inside the spout and valve over years and gradually narrows the waterway.

Why it often worsens

Restrictions are rarely static. Scale keeps growing, debris in a cartridge compacts, and a partially closed valve can be nudged further closed by vibration. A drop that seems minor can also mask a developing leak elsewhere, since water taking an easier path elsewhere reduces what reaches the tap. Meanwhile, householders often respond by opening the tap harder, which forces debris deeper into the valve and makes the eventual clean-out harder. Sorting it promptly keeps the fix small.

How we diagnose it

We work from the spout backwards. First we unscrew and inspect the aerator, which alone restores flow in a good number of cases. If flow stays low we check both hot and cold supplies separately, which tells us whether the fault is common to both or specific to one pipe. We then examine the flexible tails, isolating valves and stopcock for restrictions, and the valve cartridge or washer inside the tap. We also ask about recent plumbing work, as disturbed pipework is a frequent source of lodged debris.

How we fix it

Repairs are matched to the cause: descaling or replacing the aerator, flushing the tap and supply, renewing a kinked flexi connector, fully opening or replacing a seized isolating valve, or fitting a new cartridge or washer. Most flow problems are resolved within an hour at our 90.00 rate, with common cartridges and aerators carried on the van. If the restriction turns out to be in the wider supply, such as a shared supply pipe or pressure regulator, we will show you the evidence and explain the options honestly rather than charging for exploratory work.

Preventing future flow loss

Fit scale-resistant aerators if you are in a hard-water area and soak them in descaler occasionally. Avoid bending flexible connectors when fitting appliances under the sink, and have isolating valves exercised by turning them fully open and closed once or twice a year so they do not seize part-way.

When to call us

If cleaning the aerator makes no difference, if only one temperature is affected, or if flow has dropped across several taps, the restriction is upstream of the spout and needs proper diagnosis. Call us and we will trace it methodically rather than guess.

What to expect on the day

The plumber lays a towel on the worktop, strips the spout and valve in front of you, and shows you any blockage before cleaning or replacing it. Repairs are tested hot and cold at full flow, and the aerator is refitted hand-tight so it can be removed again for cleaning. It is a clean, quick job with no disruption to the rest of the house.

A trickle where there used to be a steady stream usually has a simple cause: a blocked aerator, limescale, or a partly closed valve somewhere on the supply. Our plumbers trace low water flow from tap to source, clean or replace the affected parts, and confirm the full flow is restored before we leave.

Questions people ask about low water flow tap repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Why has my kitchen tap suddenly gone weak?

The likeliest causes are a blocked aerator, debris in the cartridge or a partly closed isolating valve. Checking the aerator yourself is a good first step; if that does not help, the restriction is further back.

Is low flow the same as low pressure?

Not always. Low flow at one tap usually means a local restriction; low flow at every tap suggests a supply or pressure issue. We test several points to tell the two apart before recommending a fix.

What will the repair cost?

Most low-flow repairs are completed in about an hour and cost 90.00 fixed. Parts such as a new aerator or cartridge are included where standard; anything unusual is quoted before we fit it.

Could this be a problem with my water supplier?

Occasionally, yes, especially if neighbours are affected too. We will check your internal pipework first and, if everything inside points to the supply, explain what to raise with the supplier.

Can limescale permanently damage a tap?

Heavy scale inside a spout or valve can be cleaned, but badly scaled cartridges often work best replaced. Replacing the cartridge or aerator is inexpensive and usually restores full flow.
