A bad smell from the shower drain is one of those problems people put up with for months, closing the bathroom door and lighting a candle. It does not need to be that way. The odour always has a physical cause, and once that cause is found and removed, the smell stops. Our plumbers carry out bad smell from shower drain removal properly — tracing the source rather than pouring bleach down and hoping.

What causes the smell

The usual culprit is biofilm: a layer of bacteria, soap scum, hair and skin particles that builds up on the inside of the trap and the first stretch of waste pipe. As it breaks down it releases gases that rise straight up through the open drain. A dried-out trap is another common cause — every shower trap relies on a water seal to block sewer gases, and in rarely used showers, especially en-suites and guest bathrooms, that seal evaporates in a few weeks. Less often, the smell points to a partly blocked drain that holds standing water, a trap that has lost its seal because of poor ventilation or suction from another appliance, or waste pipework that was never properly connected to the trap at all.

Why it gets worse if you leave it

Biofilm thickens every time you shower, because warm water and soap are exactly what the bacteria thrive on. What starts as a faint whiff after a hot shower becomes a constant smell in the room. If the underlying cause is a partial blockage, debris keeps accumulating until the drain slows and then stops taking water, and the gases can start pushing through in earnest. A failing trap seal is worse still, because sewer gas is unpleasant, unpleasant to breathe day after day, and a sign that the barrier between your bathroom and the drainage system is not working.

How we diagnose it

We start by asking when the smell is strongest — after use, in the morning, or constantly — because the timing points to the cause. We lift the trap cover and inspect inside for waste and biofilm, run water to check how freely the drain takes it and watch the trap seal for signs of it being pulled or evaporating away. If the smell suggests a problem beyond the shower, we check nearby connections and, where needed, trace the waste run to find partial blockages. Diagnosis is methodical, not guesswork, and we explain what we have found before starting the clean.

How we fix it

The fix depends on the cause. For biofilm and trapped waste, we strip and clean the trap, then clean the trap and the first run of waste pipe properly with the right tools rather than chemicals that only numb the top layer. A dried trap simply needs its seal restored and, if the shower is rarely used, we will explain the simple routine that keeps it sealed. Where the trap is losing its seal through suction, we identify the venting or connection issue behind it. If a partial blockage is holding debris, we clear the drain and confirm water runs away freely before we leave.

If the trap or a section of pipework needs replacing, we quote for the parts before any work proceeds.

Preventing the smell coming back

Run every shower, including guest ones, briefly once a week to keep trap seals topped up. Fit a hair catcher to stop waste accumulating in the trap in the first place. Avoid tipping strong bleach down regularly — it damages some fittings and does not remove biofilm properly. Occasional flushing with hot water and a mild cleaning solution keeps the trap fresher between services, and a periodic shower maintenance plumber visit catches trap problems before they become smells.

When to call a plumber

Call us if the smell persists after you have cleaned the visible drain, if it comes and goes with a gurgle, if the drain is slow to clear, or if the shower has not been used for months and cleaning has not helped. Any smell accompanied by gurgling when other appliances run is worth checking promptly, as it suggests a venting issue.

Book your shower drain visit

Maintenance Men will trace the smell, clean the drain and confirm the trap is doing its job, all in one visit in most cases. Book a call-out by phone or online and tell us roughly when the smell is at its worst — it helps us arrive with the right equipment.

A foul smell rising from the shower drain usually means trapped waste, bacterial build-up or a trap that has lost its water seal. Air fresheners only cover the problem. We trace the source of the odour, clear the drain properly and confirm the trap is sealing, so the smell is gone for good.

Questions people ask about shower drain smell removal

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Why does my shower drain smell worse in the morning?

Overnight, water sits in the trap and gases build up in the pipework, so the smell is strongest before the shower has been used and aired. It can also mean the trap seal has partly evaporated. We check the trap seal as part of the visit.

Can I fix the smell with bleach or drain cleaner?

Bleach can reduce the smell temporarily but it does not remove biofilm from the trap and can damage some trap materials. If the cause is a dried trap seal or a partial blockage, no amount of bleach will fix it. A proper clean of the trap and pipe is what removes the source.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

The smell is in a guest bathroom we barely use — is that normal?

Yes, and it is easy to fix. The trap's water seal evaporates over weeks when a shower is not used, letting sewer gas through. Running the shower briefly each week, or having us confirm the trap, restores the seal and stops the smell.

Could the smell mean something more serious?

Occasionally. Persistent smells with gurgling or slow drainage can point to a partial blockage, a venting problem or a faulty connection. We diagnose the cause during the visit and tell you plainly if anything beyond the shower needs attention.
