The usual causes

Dishwasher leaks cluster around a handful of components. The door seal hardens, splits or collects food debris and lets water past during the wash. The inlet hose or its connection at the valve behind the unit weeps under pressure. The drain hose comes loose from the spigot under the sink or splits at a bend. The filter housing or sump seal is disturbed during cleaning and no longer sits flat. Less commonly the circulation pump seal fails and water appears from underneath the cabinet. Using ordinary washing-up liquid instead of dishwasher detergent creates excess foam that forces water out through the door.

Why the damage outpaces the leak

Dishwashers sit beside or beneath kitchen units, and a small weep runs straight into the plinth and the carcass. Chipboard swells and never returns to shape, so a leaking machine can quietly write off a base unit. Water also tracks along the floor into the next room. In flats and upstairs kitchens it can reach the room below, showing first as a damp patch on ceiling and later as a steady water leak from ceiling. Mould and musty smells follow close behind.

How we diagnose it

We ask whether the leak appears during filling, mid-cycle, at the end of the drain, or only when the door is opened. Then we pull the machine out, dry everything, and run a cycle while watching the inlet connection, the door edges, the sump and the drain hose. Tissue wrapped around joints shows a weep that a torch alone would miss. We check that the drain hose has a proper high loop, that the machine is level, and that the filter assembly is correctly seated — a badly refitted filter causes more leaks than any worn part. If water is appearing well away from the machine, we treat it as a leak investigation and bring in a leak detection plumber, because the appliance is not the source.

How we repair it

Once the part is identified, the water leak repair is usually quick. Door seals are replaced and the door alignment checked so the new seal beds evenly. Inlet and drain hoses are renewed with the correct pressure-rated parts, and connections are remade with new washers rather than reused ones. Sump and filter seals are reseated or replaced, and the machine re-levelled so residual water runs to the drain. Where a pump seal has failed, we quote for that work before starting, because it is a bigger job. We then run a full programme and check underneath with tissue before pushing the machine back.

Preventing a repeat

Use proper dishwasher detergent at the dose the manufacturer recommends — foam is a common and entirely avoidable cause of door leaks. Rinse the filter regularly and check it is seated squarely afterwards. Look at the inlet and drain hoses once a year for bulging, cracking or green crusting at the ends. Keep the machine level, and do not push it back so far that the hoses kink against the wall. A simple leak alarm under the unit costs little and warns you the first time water appears.

When to call us

Call if there is water on the floor after a cycle, if the machine trips the electrics, or if it leaks with the door shut and the programme off — that points to the inlet side and should not wait. Isolate the machine at the socket and close the supply valve under the sink before we arrive. If water has reached a ceiling below, ask for emergency leak repair near me and keep the area clear. Damp that persists around the plinth after the machine is isolated may need hidden water leak detection rather than another appliance repair.

Book a call-out

If the fault is internal, we explain the cost before any further work, and we will tell you honestly if the machine is not worth repairing. If water is spreading now, call the office and we will talk you through how to stop water leak fast — usually the valve under the sink and the plug. Book online or by phone, and clear the area in front of the machine so we can get straight to work.

A dishwasher leaking onto the kitchen floor is usually a door seal, an inlet or drain hose, or a filter housing that no longer seals. Water under the plinth quickly swells cabinet carcasses and lifts flooring. We locate the failing part, replace or reseat it, and run the machine through a full cycle so you know the leak has actually stopped rather than merely slowed.

Questions people ask about dishwasher leak repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Why is there water inside the door rather than on the floor?

Water collecting at the bottom of the door usually means the door seal is failing or the machine is not level. It is an early warning, and worth fixing before it starts reaching the floor.

Can a dishwasher leak be repaired without removing it?

Some door seal and filter issues can be dealt with in place, but most leaks need the machine pulled out to inspect the hoses and sump properly. It is a quick job once the unit is clear.

I used washing-up liquid by mistake — could that be the leak?

Very likely, yes. Foam expands past the door seal and appears as a leak with no faulty part at all. Run a rinse cycle or two and it should settle, but check again afterwards.

Is it worth repairing an older dishwasher?

For seals, hoses and filters, almost always. If the pump or sump has failed on an old machine, we will explain what the repair involves and let you weigh it against replacement.

What should I do before you arrive?

Switch the machine off at the socket and turn off the supply valve, usually under the sink. Mop up standing water and move anything stored under the unit. Do not run another cycle.
