A new fence is one of those jobs where the quality is decided long before the panels go up — in the survey, the post depth, and the materials chosen. Done properly it lasts decades; done hastily it leans within a few winters. This page explains how we approach installation so you know what you are getting.

It Starts With a Survey

Every installation begins with a survey of the boundary. We look at the length and line of the run, the ground conditions — clay that shrinks and swells, ground that gets waterlogged, slopes that need stepped panels — the access for materials, and anything the fence will meet along the way: trees, drains, manhole covers, walls. This is also where we talk about boundaries and neighbours. The precise line of a boundary, and whether a fence is a shared obligation, are matters between you and the adjoining owner, and responsibility for permissions — including any that apply near roads, to tall boundary structures, or in conservation contexts — rests with you, the customer. We do not promise compliance status; we will tell you what we can observe and what you may need to confirm, and we expect boundary agreements with neighbours to be settled before we start.

Underground Services: Digging Sensibly

Every fence post is a hole in the ground, and boundary lines are classic territory for buried pipes, cables and drains. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below. Utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the picture, and providing those plans is the customer's responsibility. We will not guess at what lies under a post position, and where a service makes a planned post location unworkable, we will discuss adjusting the run rather than digging blindly.

Design and Materials

The design conversation covers height, style and what the fence needs to do — privacy, containment for pets or children, wind screening for an exposed garden, or simply marking a line. Solid closeboard handles wind differently from lap panels; trellis tops change both the look and the wind loading; gravel boards lift timber clear of the damp ground and extend the life of everything above them. Posts are a genuine choice: timber posts for a traditional look, concrete for longevity. We will give an honest view of what suits your garden and your budget, and materials are quoted separately from labour so you can see exactly what each element costs.

The Installation Itself

Posts go in first, at proper depth and spacing for the fence's height and exposure, set in mix and allowed to cure before panels are hung — a fence hung on uncured posts is a fence being asked to carry load before it is ready. Panels, gravel boards and capping follow, and gates are hung so they swing true and latch cleanly. Installation is a quoted project: the survey leads to a fixed quote for an agreed scope, and you approve the full cost before work starts. Multi-day runs are staged sensibly, with the boundary made safe at the end of each day.

Weather and Scheduling

Fence installation needs suitable conditions — post mix will not cure properly in a downpour, and handling tall panels in high wind is unsafe. We schedule the work for a sensible weather window and will tell you plainly if conditions force a delay. Expect honesty about timing rather than a promise that risks quality.

Aftercare

A new fence asks very little: treat the timber periodically, keep soil and planting off the bottom of panels and posts, and walk the run after the first big storm to check nothing has moved. Fixings checked once a year catch any early drift.

When to Call Us

Call when you are planning a new fence — even at the idea stage, an early survey saves redesigning later. When you get in touch, tell us roughly the length of the run, whether the ground is level or sloped, and what the fence needs to achieve.

Booking is easy by phone or online. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the project itself is quoted after the survey, with the full cost approved before work starts and materials quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A new fence is a long-term investment in privacy, security and the look of your garden, and it lives or dies by the quality of the posts and the ground they sit in. The visit is a proper survey: boundaries, access, ground conditions and design, leading to a quoted project you approve before anything starts.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about fence installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is fence installation a DIY job?

A short run of panels is within reach of a competent DIYer with help, though post depth, ground conditions and the sheer number of heavy lifts make it harder than it looks. Longer runs, slopes, hard ground and anything near buried services are where DIY jobs go wrong. A survey first costs little and tells you honestly what you are taking on.

What does the survey cover?

The line and length of the run, ground conditions, access for materials, what the fence will meet along the way, and your aims for privacy, containment and appearance. It is also where boundary and permission questions get raised — those are your responsibility to settle, and we will tell you what may need confirming rather than promising compliance status.

What happens if you dig into a pipe or cable?

That is why the survey and the dig approach matter. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate before any digging, but no scan guarantees what is below, so we ask for your utilities' plans to be available. If a planned post position conflicts with a service, we adjust the run rather than dig blindly — no repair is worth striking a cable.

How long does a new fence take to install?

It depends on the length of the run, the ground and the weather. A short garden run is often a single working day on an agreed scope; longer installations are staged over several days. We will give you a realistic picture after the survey rather than promising a timescale before we have seen the boundary.

How is a new fence priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Installation is a quoted project: after the survey you get a full quote, which you approve before any work starts, with materials such as posts, panels and gates quoted separately from labour.
