Electrical faults in hot-water systems can affect an immersion heater, thermostat, timer, pump or control circuit. A breaker that trips or a burning smell should not be treated as a minor inconvenience: repeated resets or exposed wiring can create risk. Maintenance Men assesses electrical work only within competence and follows safe isolation before permitted checks or repairs. We do not undertake work outside that scope. If the fault relates to a gas boiler’s combustion or gas side, we do not inspect or repair it and refer to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.

Stop repeated resets and note the symptoms

If a circuit breaker or residual-current device trips when hot water is selected, leave it off rather than repeatedly switching it back on. Note which control was in use, whether the trip occurred immediately or after heating began, and whether there is visible water, a burning smell, unusual noise or heat at a switch. Do not touch exposed wiring, remove a faceplate or use a test pen. If there is smoke or fire, move away and call emergency services. Water near electrical equipment is especially hazardous; keep clear and do not enter a wet area to reach a switch.

Establish safe isolation before assessment

We identify the system and the circuit involved, then isolate the relevant supply safely before any permitted electrical work. Safe isolation is verified using appropriate procedures; switching off a control is not by itself proof that wiring is safe. If we cannot establish a safe condition or the work exceeds our competence, we do not proceed with internal electrical repair and will explain the appropriate specialist route. Accessible timer, thermostat, immersion and control symptoms may be considered alongside the cylinder behaviour. We do not undertake live working as a shortcut or ask a customer to expose conductors for us.

Trace the electrical component linked to the symptom

A damaged element, thermostat, connection, timer or supply issue can all stop water heating, while moisture or a wiring problem may cause a protective device to trip. We use the reported pattern and suitable checks to identify the likely source. Any replacement part needs to match the existing equipment and installation; compatibility and availability are confirmed before proposing it. Parts and materials are quoted separately. A wider circuit issue may require a specialist electrician or further inspection. Where a boiler is gas-fired, an electrical water-side issue does not permit us to open or assess its gas components; that work belongs to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Repair only within agreed and competent scope

If the fault is within our competence and safe to access, we explain the proposed repair, limitations and any required part before work. If it involves a new circuit, concealed wiring, damaged consumer unit or another scope we cannot undertake, we will recommend the appropriate qualified specialist instead. We do not guarantee that replacing a visible control will resolve a fault elsewhere in the circuit. Any larger work can be quoted and staged separately. The full cost is presented for approval before work starts, and no parts are assumed included in the labour.

Protect the system after the visit

Do not restore power until advised if there is a visible hazard or the protective device trips again. Keep the area dry and do not cover an overheating switch. After a repair, monitor the system for normal operation and report a repeat trip, smell, heat or leak promptly. Never bypass a safety device to regain hot water. If gas is smelled, do not use switches or flames; open doors and windows if safe, leave and call 0800 111 999 from outside. A suspected gas leak is an emergency, not a Maintenance Men booking.

Book an electrical assessment

Book online and describe the tripping device, what was switched on, any smell or leak and whether hot water works from another source. Do not open a cover to obtain a rating label. The booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and obtain approval before work begins. Materials or parts may be quoted separately. If a specialist referral is needed, we explain why.

Book online for a safe electrical assessment; leave a tripping circuit switched off and mention any immediate hazard.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A tripping circuit, failed immersion or unresponsive control can interrupt hot water and may indicate an electrical hazard. Do not open covers or keep resetting a breaker. We assess the reported symptoms within our electrical competence, isolate safely before permitted work and explain if another qualified specialist is needed.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about electrical fault in hot water system

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Should I reset a breaker that keeps tripping?

No. Leave it off and report what was running when it tripped. If there is smoke, a burning smell or water at electrical equipment, keep clear and take urgent safety steps.

How do you check an electrical hot-water fault?

We identify the relevant circuit and safely isolate before permitted checks of suitable controls or components. If isolation or competence is insufficient, we stop and explain the specialist route.

Can you work on a boiler’s gas components if the fault is electrical?

No. Gas and combustion work is outside our scope. A gas-side concern is referred to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.

Could an immersion heater make a circuit trip?

It can be one possible cause, but a thermostat, connection, wiring or other component may also be involved. Safe assessment is needed before replacing anything.

How is electrical work priced?

The booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for approval before work starts, with parts and materials quoted separately.
