The joints that keep a kitchen dry
A laminate or timber worktop is only as durable as its sealed edges. Water from washing up, kettles, a slow sink drip or a damp cloth left overnight gets into any unsealed gap and finds the chipboard core underneath, which swells and never quite returns to shape. The critical lines are where the worktop meets the wall or splashback, along any upstand, around the sink cutout, and at the joint where two worktop lengths butt together. Sealant on these lines is a consumable: it dries, cracks and lifts with years of cleaning and movement, and it needs renewing before the board beneath has a chance to suffer.
What we look for
We examine each joint in turn and, importantly, what is happening around it. A gap that keeps opening at a worktop joint may mean the boards are not supported properly; staining or a soft spot near the sink suggests water has already got in; a lifted upstand may need refixing, not just resealing. We check whether the surface is sound and dry, whether the sink itself is sealed and secured, and whether there are signs of a plumbing leak that sealing would only cover up. Anything that turns out to be a plumbing or structural issue is flagged honestly — sealant is the finish to a sound joint, not a repair for a failing one.
Stripping and sealing
Old sealant is cut out completely, because new sealant will not bond over old residue, and a thin leftover skin guarantees an early failure. We clean the joint, clear out debris, and make sure the surfaces are dry before anything is applied. Each line is then sealed with a bead tooled to a neat, wipe-clean finish: sanitary-grade silicone where the joint will see regular water, such as around the sink and drainer, and an appropriate product on drier joints such as the wall line behind the worktop. Around a sink cutout we seal carefully so the bead does not interfere with the sink's own fixings.
Choosing the right product
Not every kitchen joint wants the same material. Silicone handles constant moisture and flexes with the board; a quality acrylic or hybrid sealant can be the better choice where the joint will be painted or where you want a flush, paintable finish. What we use is agreed with you, and if you have a preference — a particular colour to match the worktop, or a tube you have already bought — say so when booking. Materials are quoted separately and confirmed before we start, so nothing arrives unannounced.
Cure and first use
Sealant needs its cure time, and in a working kitchen that takes a little planning. Most products need hours to a day or so before the joint can be wiped, splashed or scrubbed. We tell you exactly when the worktop can go back into service and how to clean the new bead — non-abrasive cleaners keep it intact for far longer. The sink can be used gently once the cure time the product specifies has passed, and we will give you that timing plainly before we leave.
When sealing is not enough
If the chipboard is already swollen, the worktop surface is lifting, or the joint has been wet long enough to rot the board, no bead of sealant will undo that, and we will not pretend otherwise. Equally, sealing will not fix a leaking sink waste, a failed appliance connection or a structural gap that keeps opening. Where the job has grown beyond a reseal, we say what we can do, what needs a specialist, and we refer accordingly. And like any seal, this is a flexible barrier maintained over time, not a guaranteed watertight enclosure.
Getting the kitchen ready
Empty the worktop near the joints being sealed and clear the sink area if the cutout is in scope. Keep the surfaces dry beforehand — a damp joint will not bond. If the kitchen is in daily use, plan around the cure time we specify, and tell us at booking if there are joints you especially want covered so the scope can be agreed.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Kitchen worktops live above chipboard or MDF, and both swell badly when water gets in. The joints that protect them — along the wall, at the upstand, around the sink cutout and where two worktops meet — rely on sealant that dries out and splits with age. We strip the failed seal, dry the joint and reseal so splashes stay on the surface where they belong.

Questions people ask about kitchen worktop sealing
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I reseal my worktop myself?
A careful DIYer can manage a straight run, and a decent sealant gun is not expensive. What makes the difference is the preparation — old sealant must be stripped out fully and the joint dried — and choosing the right product for a joint that will be scrubbed daily. We handle the strip-out and the application to the same standard across every joint.
What do you inspect before sealing a worktop?
We check every joint in scope: the wall line, any upstand, the sink cutout and the joints between boards. We look for swelling or soft spots that show water has already got in, whether the sink is secure, and whether any plumbing above the joint is leaking. Anything that needs more than resealing is raised with you before we start.
My worktop is already swollen near the sink — will sealing fix it?
No, and we would say so rather than seal over it. Once chipboard has swollen, the damage is in the board, and the honest options are repairing or replacing the affected section — work we will scope openly or refer if it needs a joiner. Sealing over a rotten edge is a bead waiting to fail.
Which sealant is right around a food prep area?
Around sinks and drainers we use a sanitary-grade, mould-resistant silicone, the type formulated for kitchens and bathrooms where surfaces are wiped down daily. It is applied, tooled and given its cure time before the area goes back into use. If you want a specific brand or colour to match the worktop, tell us at booking and materials will be confirmed separately.
How is worktop sealing priced?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and agreed with you before any work starts. Materials such as sealant are identified and quoted separately from the labour.
