The pile that follows every decorating job

It is the quiet aftermath of every redecoration: the pictures off, the mirror down, the shelves stripped for painting — and then the painting finished, the furniture back in place, and a careful row of frames still leaning along the skirting boards weeks later. Rehanging is the part nobody budgets time for, because it seems like simple reversal. It rarely is. The holes may not line up, the fixings may not survive reuse, and the wall behind the fresh paint has its own opinions about being drilled again.

Why rehanging is not just reversing the removal

Three things complicate putting items back. First, alignment: a wall that has been filled, sanded and painted rarely accepts the old fixing positions cleanly — old holes may have been filled, or the new paint surface chips around them, so fresh fixings in fresh positions are often the better answer. Second, the fixings themselves: plugs that were fine on removal day may be past reuse, and fresh paint fills can hide a fixing point that is no longer sound. Third, the items: hardware that came off with the pictures — cords, D-rings, hooks — may have bent or worked loose, and shelves that sat for months in a garage may have warped. We check all three before anything goes back up.

How we work through the room

We start with the plan: where each item goes, which positions are being reused and which need fresh fixings, and which old holes need making good as part of the visit. Heavy items go up first, while there is time to do them properly — mirrors, shelves and anything substantial get their fixings matched to their real weight and the wall we find, never just replaced like-for-like because that is where the old hole happens to be. Then the lighter pieces follow, each checked level and square against its neighbours. Old fixing points that are not being reused are filled and sanded flush, ready for paint; if the wall was freshly decorated, we take care to work cleanly so the new finish is not scuffed in the process.

What we will flag along the way

Rehanging visits routinely turn up small things worth knowing: a frame whose cord has frayed, a shelf that has picked up a warp, a filling job from the decorating that has not held, or a wall that turns out to be different from expected where the old fixings were. We report what we find and agree what to do rather than quietly working around it. And the usual honesty about decoration applies: we fill and make good old holes ready for paint, but we cannot promise a perfect paint match, and fresh fills need curing time before they are loaded.

What to have ready

Have the items gathered and accessible, with their hanging hardware where it survived — and mention anything you already suspect is broken, because we can often fit replacement hardware if it is needed. Know roughly where each item went, or be happy for us to propose positions. If the decorating is genuinely finished and painted, tell us when booking so we plan the making-good to respect the new finish.

Aftercare

Once everything is back up, give the heavy pieces a check after their first week, especially anything on plasterboard. Freshly filled old holes need their curing time before anything hangs from them again. And if an item that was rehung shifts or creaks in the following weeks, call us while it is a two-minute adjustment rather than a re-do.

Booking your rehang

A single room's worth of light items is a short visit; several rooms, heavy pieces or a lot of making-good takes longer, and the estimate covers the list of items we agree, not an open-ended project — so tell us roughly what and how many when you enquire. Same-day slots may be available if you call early. To book: the booking fee is paid on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any replacement hardware quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Everything came off the walls for the redecorating — and six months later it is all still leaning against the skirting board, because rehanging a roomful of items is a bigger job than taking them down was. We put your wall items back properly: new fixings where the old ones will not do, old holes filled, and each item checked level and secure.

Questions people ask about rehang wall items

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is rehanging things after decorating worth a professional visit?

If it is a couple of light frames, probably not — grab a hook and a level. If it is a roomful, or items with real weight, it is worth it: old fixings rarely survive reuse, old holes rarely line up, and doing it properly means new fixings matched to each item and the old holes filled. That is also why it takes longer than people expect, and why it keeps not getting done.

What do you check before putting items back up?

We check the items and their hanging hardware for damage or wear, assess the wall at each fixing point — including old filled holes, which may no longer be sound — and confirm positions with you before drilling. Anything that will not hold safely, from a frayed picture cord to a warped shelf, gets flagged and agreed rather than quietly refitted.

Can the items go back in exactly their old positions?

Often yes, but not always. If old holes were filled during the decorating or the fixings are past reuse, fresh fixing points slightly offset are frequently the more reliable answer, with the old positions made good. Where an item can genuinely go back exactly where it was, it will — we agree the approach for each item rather than assume.

Will rehanging damage my fresh paintwork?

There is always some risk when drilling a newly painted wall, and honesty is the better policy: we work cleanly, drill carefully and clean as we go, but a new fixing hole is a new hole in new paint. Old holes we fill and sand ready for you to touch up. We will talk through the reality of it at quoting rather than promise a zero-mark visit.

How does pricing work for a rehang visit?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us — more notice generally means a better rate. We quote the full cost before work starts, based on the list of items agreed, and you approve it. Any replacement hanging hardware that turns out to be needed is identified and quoted separately.
