More than a cosmetic swap

A door handle is a working part: it throws the latch, returns the spring, and takes a twisting load several times a day. Fitting one properly means matching it to the door's lock, not just making it look right. We fit replacement lever handles, knob sets, bathroom privacy handles and UPVC door handles, checking the mechanical fit as carefully as the finish, because a handle that does not suit the door is an annoyance you will notice every time you use it.

Matching the handle to the door

Handles are not universal. Lever-on-backplate and lever-on-rose styles need different screw spacing; the spindle that passes through the latch has to be the right length and profile for the latch fitted; and the latch itself has a backset that decides where the handle sits on the door. UPVC doors have their own padded handles with spring cassettes, and their screw centres must match the old handle or the multipoint strip below will not line up. If you have already bought handles, we check whether they fit your doors before drilling anything, and if they do not we will say so rather than force the fit. Handles are normally supplied by you, or we can identify and quote suitable replacements.

How we fit them

We remove the old furniture, clean the door face, check the latch is secure and working, then fit the new handle with the fixings its design intends — not whatever is longest in the drawer. Overtightened screws on a hollow-core internal door are a classic way to crush the door face, so the fixing choice depends on the door's construction. On bathroom doors we test the privacy function both ways, including the emergency release from the outside. On UPVC we test the handle against the multipoint lock to make sure it lifts and returns smoothly without catching.

Common situations we see

Replacing one droopy handle on a bedroom door is a five-minute visit. Swapping all the handles in a house takes planning: matching backsets, spindle lengths and screw centres across doors of different ages, and flagging any door whose latch or alignment needs attention first. Then there are the doors where the handle was never the problem — a latch that no longer springs back, a strike plate out of line, a door that has dropped on its hinges. We identify which of those you actually have before starting, so you are not paying for a handle that changes nothing.

Where a new handle will not help

A handle can only work as well as the latch and the door behind it. If the door has dropped and the latch no longer lines up with the strike plate, the handle will still feel wrong after fitting — that is a realignment job. If the latch itself is worn or broken, it should be replaced, and we can usually do that in the same visit. We will always tell you which of the three problems you actually have before touching a screwdriver.

Aftercare

A drop of oil on the latch tongue and hinge knuckles once or twice a year keeps most internal doors quiet. Avoid over-tightening the handle screws if you ever remove them for painting, and take handles off rather than painting around them. On external doors, keep an eye on the finish around the handle for water getting in, especially on exposed timber doors where a wet handle side starts rot.

Booking

Whether it is one sticky back door or a house's worth of handles, we cover the West Midlands and same-day appointments may be available depending on when you call. Booking involves a fee paid when you reserve the slot; the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need us, and the full cost is quoted and agreed before we pick up a screwdriver.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A loose, rattling or worn handle is a small thing that annoys you every single day. We fit new door handles that match the locks and latches already in your doors, check the mechanism behind them, and leave every door closing cleanly. If the handle is a symptom of a bigger problem, we will tell you that too.

Questions people ask about door handle installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I change a door handle myself?

On many internal doors, yes — handles are held by screws and a spindle, and a like-for-like swap is a reasonable DIY job. It goes wrong when the new handle's screw spacing or spindle does not match the old one, or on UPVC doors where the handle must line up with the multipoint lock below. If you are unsure, we can check the fit before you commit to drilling.

What do you check when fitting a handle?

We measure the backset and screw centres, check the spindle length and profile, and inspect the latch itself for wear. Then we fit the handle with fixings suited to the door's construction and test the latch action from both sides. On bathroom doors we also test the privacy function and the emergency release.

Can a new handle fix a door that will not latch?

Usually no — a door that will not latch has an alignment or latch problem, not a handle problem. We identify which of the three is at fault before starting, because fitting a new handle over a worn latch just moves the annoyance. If realignment or a new latch is needed, we can often do it in the same visit.

Do I need to buy the handles before you come?

That is the usual arrangement: you choose the style and finish, and we check they fit your doors before fitting them. If you would rather we identified suitable replacements, that can be quoted separately. Keep the old handles until the new ones are fitted, as they are useful for matching screw positions.

How is handle fitting priced?

You pay a booking fee when you reserve the slot, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. If several doors are involved, list them at booking so the visit can be planned properly.
